Henry Brown retiring

Rep. Henry Brown, a five-term South Carolina Republican from a conservative-leaning district, has told associates he will his announce his retirement Monday, POLITICO has learned.

He will be making his announcement at a press conference tomorrow afternoon back in his coastal Carolina district.

Brown survived a closer-than-expected reelection in 2008 and was already facing a primary challenge from Carroll Campbell III, the son of the former GOP governor and congressman.

But a source close to Brown said that the congressman, who previously served in the state House, was not being chased off.

”He’s simply ready to retire after 25 years of public service,” said the source, noting that Brown’s approval ratings in his Low Country district remain high. “But he turned 74 last month and wants to spend time with family.”

Brown’s retirement is sure to set off an intense primary in the 1st District, which was held by Gov. Mark Sanford before Brown and gave Sen. John McCain 56 percent of the vote in 2008.

In addition to Campbell, another renowned South Carolina political name may join the race. Paul Thurmond, son of the iconic former senator and a Charleston attorney and county council member, was urged to challenge Brown in the primary — and told POLITICO he was considering jumping in the field.

Too bad older democrats don’t retire (there’s a huge list who need to go starting with KKK Byrd)...Sounds like there will be a good candidate to take up his seat.

They are all afraid they will end up in jail and will lose their pensions, healthcare goodies and the ability to serve in government.

Just because you retire buster doesn’t mean you ain’t going to lose them.

It was a cross post from an adjacent thread I had opened in my browser. When I noticed the mistake I asked the admins to delete it, which they did. We return to your regular programming.

Here in my district in San Antonio, Frank Corte is retiring. I have no idea why. It will be a huge loss for us. I have worked with him and for him. He has served three tours in Iraq...he has a beautiful family. Maybe he is just weary of politics but it is such a loss for us.
