Army Navy Game Thread

Posted on 12/11/2009 8:46:03 AM PST by chargers fan

Just thought with the game tomorrow and the Cadets/Midshipmen making their way to Phili today I'd create a thread for old grads from each side to root for their team.

I’m always so challenged each time they play one another.... I served for 5 years in the US Navy Submarine Service... and then 16 years in the US Army Chemical Corps, retiring in 1997 as an E-7.

I console myself with the fact that both are great teams, representing wonderful academies, which are training tomorrow’s leaders, who have chosen to protect our freedom.

Therefore, we ALL win in supporting either, or both, teams!

“Hey. Another year has passed.”

You can say that again. The year (2003) that photo was taken was his Plebe year.

He’s now a 1st Lt, flying a CH-46E.

Tempus fugit!

While my dear old Pappy served in the US Army during World War Two and was a West Point fan, I've been pulling for the Naval Academy since my days at John J. Pershing Junior High School when Joe Bellino lead Navy Blue & Gold to victory over Army Gray in 1959 and 1960, winning the Heisman Trophy his Senior year!

When Army and Navy play each other at any sport... it is the only time the Navy and Marine Corps are on the same side!

Appropriate that your tagline is a quote from a NA grad.

We're too busy fighting those American-hating terrorists to
concentrate on winning football games the way the Navy, who does not have fight anyone, can.

Regardless of the rankings, THE college football game of the year.

EVERY year....

Here's a year. These guys - on both sides of the field - were in for eventful careers after graduation.

Army-Navy, 1939

Re #1: Appropriate that your tagline is a quote from a NA grad.

Yes, magslinger, I praise the Class of 1929... for giving us Bob Heinlein!

Re #2: We're too busy fighting those American-hating terrorists to concentrate on winning football games the way the Navy, who does not have fight anyone, can.

Gadzooks, big! Even the Junior Birdmen from Colorado Springs... are snickering over that lame excuse!

I supposed when my 'Boys smoke your Packers in this year's coming NFC Championship Game... you'll claim they were way too tired from pressing the curd!

BTW I have a family gathering up in Big D tomorrow... so I may not be able to be on the thread if the Middies need me, but I'll be backing them to the hilt win, lose or draw!!!!

And I'll also be visiting with my Dixie Cup hatted cuz that does something oh so hush-hush on those Navy 707s that fly here and there without any noticeable markings. He says he'll tell me exactly what he does if I will open a vein on each arm and leg. He has always been a wisenheimer since his momma dropped him on his soft spot the day after he was born! But he means well--

RE: Gadzooks, big! Even the Junior Birdmen from Colorado Springs... are snickering over that lame excuse!

Not so far-fetched my FRiend. The Army does not have the luxury of recruiting anything but warriors.
While the other services have enough "manpower" to siphon off their folks to man desks at the BOQ and VOQ and other base activities, the Army has to hire
contractors to do that because they are stretched too thin. The same holds true for the officer corps. The Army can't afford to lessen the standards a bit to attract athletes in lieu of military aptitude. The Air Force did it for years and the Navy does it now.
I, for one, am glad to be associated with an military service that is more concerned with defending the nation than fielding a football team.

Well, one of them isn't.

I’m just curious. I see a lot of service members who have changed from on service to another. Why?

Hey Bender...how’s my favorite naughty robot? Or should that be my naughty favorite robot? No matter; they both work.

I noticed that you once again used “Gadzooks!” in your post and was wondering if you knew the origin of that term. It’s a contraction of the phrase “God’s wounds,” and is used so one doesn’t take the Name of the Lord in vain. It’s got a sister phrase, “Zounds,” which means the same thing.

Just a little pre-game trivia is all. Hope all is well with you,

Best,
