("Mad" Czar John Holdren) Obama Science Adviser Urges Climate Action Amid Uproar
Wall Street Journal ^ | Dec. 2, 2009 | STEPHEN POWER

Posted on 12/02/2009 6:26:12 PM PST by thouworm

Human activity is "beyond any reasonable doubt" the primary cause of warming temperatures, Mr. Holdren said. (snip)

"However this controversy comes out, the result will not call into question the bulk of our understanding of how the climate works or how humans affect it," said Mr. Holdren, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

He agreed it is important to "get to the bottom of" the emails' meaning, but emphasized that the vast majority of scientists who have studied climate change agree that failure to act promptly to curb emissions of heat-trapping gases is "overwhelmingly likely" to lead to extreme and damaging impacts on the planet.

“However this particular controversy comes out, the result will not call into question the bulk of our understanding of how the climate works,” he said.

These jackasses don’t have a friggen’ clue how the climate works. But they know how freedom works and they want don’t want that for the masses.

Unfortunately, today, he had the deck stecked with his Climate Data Deniers:

Referring to the hacked e-mails, Sensenbrenner said,

“There’s increasing evidence of scientific fascism going on,” later adding, “There’s an awful lot scientific McCarthyism going on,” by which he meant name-calling.

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) came to the scientists’ defense.

“It is continually stunning to me that people can see the evidence before their eyes” and continue to doubt the reality of climate change, he said. He turned to Holdren and said, sarcastically, “I just want to ask you if you’re a member of a global conspiracy.”

Holdren assured the committee he was not.

Inslee then expressed his own concerns about the state of the science, but from another angle — that it has not provided projections that are dire enough. Lubchenco responded that scientists have to err on the side of cautious and conservative estimates.

Later, Inslee spoke with obvious emotion and a raised voice as he talked about climate change’s effects in the Seattle area:

“I’d like to be able to catch salmon … maybe 50 or 60 years from now, and when people watch what I’ve watched and say that’s fascism, I got a problem with that.”

While it was not clear what “scientific fascism” might actually be, Holdren tried to address the concerns of Sensenbrenner:

This data in the e-mails addressed a “very small part” of what we know about climate science, he explained. He also pointed out that in the time since the data referred to in the e-mails was collected, the National Academies of Science had studied and reported on the same data. The academies concluded in 2006 that the last 50 years have been the warmest in the last 1,000 years and probably much longer, he said.

Holdren emphasized that science is always contentious, but that the science behind anthropogenic climate change is overwhelming.

“I would point out that scientists are human … but the point is that however this plays out, the great bulk of the climate science will not be changed,” he said.

Holdren was given a pass at being sworn in during recent testimony.

In other words: We warmers threw away the raw data, but it’s only $145 Trillion, trust us.

No Thanks!

Lubchenco missed the whole point. The CRU crowd were into developing temperature data for the period BEFORE THE THERMOMETER was available to measure anything. NASA and NOAA measure temperatures as they now occur, but they were also responsible for the standard ground stations in the US. They let those stations fall into disrepair while waiting to launch satellites that could do a better job.

The temperatures reported by NOAA from those stations began climbing at roughly the rate older whitewash rooftop paints were replaced by modern alked paints, or even acrylics. The older paint kept light at all frequencies OUT of the inside of the units. The modern paints let everything through to heat the equipment.

Even Dr. Hansen finally rejected any data at all from Africa or South America because it was BAD!

Dr. Jones and Dr. Mann worked together to disprove the Medieval Warm Period. The result was they made it look colder "way back when". Then, when they took NASA's data for recent years and combined it with the falsified Medieval Warm Period data on a graph, it made the graph jump from a low temperature to a high temperature in a few centuries.

We know from numerous other studies that the Medieval Warm Period was WARMER than recent decades.

I think Lubchenco should be required to demonstrate that she completed the course of study for the degrees she claimed on her job application.

There are other “sleight of hand” manipulations that they seem to use whenever potentially-contradictory evidence about temperatures during the MWP is cited. For example, a standard tool in their bag of tricks is to dismiss evidence of warmer temps during the MWP at near-Arctic locations such as Greenland by claiming that they were merely “regional” occurrances but not global phenomena. However that does not prevent them from extrapolating from other near-Arctic sources, such as tree ring data from Siberia, and claiming that (notwithstanding their claims to the contrary for evidence from Greenland) such data is indeed a suitable proxy for global phenomena.

(Interestingly, the veracity of the “peer-reviewed” Siberian tree ring data and its interpretation has come under increased scrutiny that threatens to derail such arguments, and in combination with the leaked emails, is beginning to shape up as a damning indictment of the “scientists” involved in formulating that interpretation).

Lubchenco even attempted a high school chemistry lesson with two quick experiments at the witness table. Donning one rubber glove, she demonstrated how adding carbon dioxide to water made it more acidic and said that is what's now happening in the world's oceans. Then she put chalk in acidic water compounds and showed it dissolving a bit, to demonstrate what will happen eventually to vital sea life.

Boy, is she a moron! You do know that some people soil the ocean with their bodily fluids; that has to be bad for the fish! Not only that, but the animals living in the sea soil their own environment. If you concentrate that into a small space like Lubchenco did all the animals living in that cesspool would surely die!

The physics, chemistry, and quantities are not enough to deliver the concentrations of carbon dioxide and chalk needed, except in a classroom. She should know better! Jane is an alchemist, not a marine biologist, IMO.

Instead of vigorously defending the indefensible, these folks should be addressing the substance of the issues raised. But they cannot, can they?

The Siberian tree ring data is one of the biggest most outrageous scams I've ever seen anyone pull off.

It reminds me of Jim and Tammy Baker where they were raising funds on their TV show for "Kevin's House".

You couldn't be a good Christian unless you gave money for "Kevin's House" for this little crippled kid named Kevin.

This is in a world where the majority of people ~ in the billions ~ have inadequate housing!.

A handful of Siberian trees then became the data source for the entire world before the modern time.

That was their proxy, much as Kevin became the proxy for all the poor people in the world.

Why am I not surprised that Dr. Mann, et al, used a TV evangelists' scam as a model?

Thanks for the link. I hate to be a pessimist, but we are not likely to get any prosecutions or real investigations until the republicans can get back in the majority in the house and senate. With Obama and the dems at the helm, the level of thugocracy and corruption is unprecedented in American history. I truly fear for our republic.

“In practice, burden of proof is an evolving thing – it evolves as the amount of evidence relevant to a particular proposition grows”, Holdren said.

This cuts both ways. It seems to me that the amount of evidence relevant to every charge being leveled at the fraudsters is growing.

Also, the circle keeps growing beyond the relatively few original senior researchers.
