Webb warns Obama on Copenhagen trip
The Hill ^ | 12/01/09 | Michael O'Brien

President Barack Obama should be wary of committing the U.S. to any binding climate standards at a global conference this month without congressional input, one senator warned.

Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) sent a letter to the president late last week warning Obama against agreeing to any binding climate change agreement during a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark this month.

"I would like to express my concern regarding reports that the Administration may believe it has the unilateral power to commit the government of the United States to certain standards that may be agreed upon at the upcoming [conference]," Webb wrote to Obama.

They need 67 Senators to ratify, I think... can’t do it with ‘Rats alone. And I bet there are at least a couple ‘Rats who aren’t that stupid. Then again, there may be a couple (R)s who ARE that stupid.

Byrd-Hagel Resolution

Passed the Senate 96-0 in opposition to Kyoto. Clinton brought that thing home and then didn't submit it to the Senate leaving Bush to take the heat for finally disposing of it. Senate approval still needed. Nothing has changed.

Yep, isn’t our macaca senator up for re-election in 2010? This might explain his deep concern for our republic and its independence. Sadly for Webb, I and a lot of my neighbors will work overtime to defeat him just like we did Deeds. I guess Webb noticed that the WaPo hit pieces on McDonnel didn’t leave a scratch. Without the WaPo Webb would still be writing homo-erotic literature instead being a senator.

Well, yes, a treaty needs to be confirmed by the Senate.

But who thinks Obama goes by the rules? No doubt the EPA will simply go ahead with it if he gives the order. And if he gets another appointment to SCOTUS, then the rules will be changed to say that we must obey “international law.”

Still not legitimate, but it would be better not to let him go down that route. Even Webb is right once every few years. He probably fears for his job, and is tacking right until after his next election. He ran as a conservative pro-lifer before he was elected and showed his true colors.

This is interesting that he is concerned Obama will try to overstep his authority.

Even if he did get away with doing this, I believe the American people would tell him to stick it where the sun don’t shine. The world knows we will do this so his credibility around the world is zero. You would think he would really be worried about this.

This is post ClimateGate "cover" for Obama, so Obama does not have to go through with his committments regarding the now discredited global warming.

An earlier post:
"Why is Obama still going to Copenhagen and stating that he will pledge the USA to a 17% decrease..."

Because he and his advisers are too arrogant to realize that his going there will only link him more closely with the perpetrators of climate fraud. ClimateGate will eventually make its way into the MSM and in retrospect Obama will look like an idiot for buying into a discredited theory. Taking a long-term view, it is to our advantage as opponents, that he go to Copenhagen. He might has well be going to a county fair to buy some snake oil.

Senate MUST ratify any treaties.

Constitution says the Senate must ratify treaties (advise and consent) by a 2/3 majority.

If you'll remember, Algore signed the Kyoto treaty, but Slick Willie never submitted it to the Senate for ratification because the Senate had already approved 95-0 a "Sense of the Senate" bill. The sense of the senate was they weren't going to approve any treaty which let China and India go scott free.

“Webb, a complete idiot, seems to be having a moment of sobriety.”

I will disagree with you that Webb is a total idiot. In fact, his appointment of Gen Al Gray as Commandant of the Marine Corps was critically important in the renaissance of the Corps after the damage done by the Viet Nam years.

From his novels, it is clear that Mr. Webb is deeply patriotic and took his oath to serve seriously.

Thus, it is incomprehensible to me that he has supported Obama as much as he has in the past.

However, I think we are seeing some of Webb’s core values emerge, likely prodded by the Virginia governer’s race results and his desire to retain his senate seat in a “reddening” Virginia.

Some of Webb’s biggest political donors and patrons are the Southwest Virginia coal companies. He’s been beating the drum against cap & tax all year, so this is not an anomaly.

This is so big, it is hard to tell who is involved.
Remember none of them questioned his eligibility even though there were questions.
So far I think there is only one senator asking for an investigation into climategate, not even a demand to stop the rest of stimulus $$$ to green jobs.

The one thing I wonder is whether Zer0 could get around the 2/3 requirement by ratifying through issuing an Executive Order, claiming extraordinary circumstances (threat to the climate, need for action etc etc).

Webb wrote to Obama:

"Although details have not been made available, recent statements by Special Envoy on Climate Change Todd Stern indicate that negotiators may be intending to commit the United States to a nationwide emission reduction program," Webb added. "As you well know from your time in the Senate, only specific legislation agreed upon in the Congress, or a treaty ratified by the Senate, could actually create such a commitment on behalf of our country."

Amazing. Simply Amazing!

You are correct. Here's some backup info...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_ratification#Ratification_of_an_international_treaty

It requires 2/3 of the US Senate to ratify any international treaties. That would be 67 senators, which would require Republican support.

Those bad numbers surprised me since they contradicted the election day exit polls. Weren’t 0’s numbers well over 50% in VA at that time? Sounded fishy since I would have thought if he really were still popular there that the Dem would have done better in the gov. election. A NJ poll had 0’s rating even lower there so I was skeptical about the VA figures.

You see the Missouri polls also? McCain carried that state by a tiny margin but the bottom is falling out for B0 there too. If he is doing badly in MO then it can’t be looking good nationwide.
