Penn State scientist in hot seat over global warming e-mails
Global-warming skeptics say leaked messages show professor distorted facts.

A Penn State University science professor is at the center of the firestorm over an anonymous hacker's release of more than 1,000 once-private e-mails sent by global warming scientists.
Michael E. Mann, director of Penn State's Earth System Science Center, is marked as author, recipient or subject of several of the e-mails, which skeptics say are proof that Mann and others have been distorting data to make the case for global warming.
Mann has denied any manipulation of facts, but skeptics are pointing to one e-mail in particular as evidence that he and others have engaged in a statistical deception to hide drops in global temperatures and exaggerate warming trends.
According to the Nov. 16, 1999, e-mail, scientist Phil Jones wrote to Mann and two other scientists to say: ''I've just completed Mike [Mann]'s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline.''
Jones is director of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in Britain, the origin of the e-mail records released Thursday. ''Keith'' is Keith Briffa, another professor at the Climate Research Unit.
Explaining the ''Nature trick'' reference in the e-mail, Mann told the Wired.com blog the ''trick'' was simply a solution to the problem of displaying temperature data in a way that makes the information easier to understand.
The Morning Call could not reach Mann on Tuesday for further comment.

That’s cool. I understand, Mike. And I’m sure you’ll be releasing all of the code and raw data so that an impartial observer can replicate 100% of your calculations, start to finish. Then we’ll see for themselves that what you’re claiming is true.

Notice how Mann "explains" the word "trick" but ignores explaining how "hiding" means anything but it's plain meaning.

Total crap defense. The key words in the sentence are “...to hide the decline.” If you’re trying to hide something, then you can’t possible be engaged in science.

I searched, but didn’t find anything concrete on this.
However, searching on Michael Man yields a heckuva lot of interesting material.
My guess is, even if the CRU leak hadn’t happened, these paleoclimatology pseudo-scientists (the “gang of 52” or whatever) were pretty close to being brought down, science-wise. A lot of their arguments are quite thin, and the wolves were at the door. Have been for some time, in fact...
But getting the word out is another problem entirely; we can thank the CRU leaker for putting muscular legs on the story, and speeding it along.

On an academic fraud basis, uu@W is nowhere near as bad as Churchill. On an absolute scale as a defrauder of the People, he is orders of magnitude worse.

I'm afraid you're right.
This is not going to be a knockout blow. It's not even going to slow down the train. I wish it wasn't true, but it's wishful thinkng to believe that these e-mails are going to bring the AGW movement to it's knees.
They are, however, part of a cumulative process that will eventually cause the balloon to pop. Things are going to have to get a lot worse than they are now, though. I wish it were otherwise, believe me.
The "trick" wouldn't be at all necessary if we'd just "understand" and get in line for massive tax hikes and government control over every facet of our lives.

Mann was at UVA until 2005, as was Pat Michaels, global warming skeptic and former state climatologist of Virginia (before being forced to step down by Gov. Kaine two years ago). On a local Richmond radio station this morning Michaels was interviewed and said he thought an investigation at the state level was more likely than by congress. BTW, Bob McDonnell was just elected governor and Ken Cuccinelli is the new Attorney General. This could get interesting. The only problem is that global warming was not a campaign issue and folks would be ticked if McDonnell turned his attention to it with jobs, the economy, and transportation all needing immediate attention.

There are some people in the federal government who are really in trouble today ~ and I mean really, really, really in trouble.
I've seen people go to prison for 20 years for messing with a furniture acquisition contract (to buy cubicles) in the same way.

Thank you for your suggestion. I just sent an email to Spanier with the following message:
Dear Sir
It has become very clear that a Professor Mann at PSU has been complicit for many years in perpetrating and furthering the hoax of anthropogenic climate change; refusing to furnish data for other scientists’ perusal and testing; cooking data to produce fraudulent outcomes which promote/advance the hoax; collusion with other scientists to hide contrary data and exaggerate partiallly-corroborative data; etc; etc.
As the father and uncle of PSU grads, and as the uncle of a Junior student now on campus at Happy Valley, anything which tends to besmirch the reputation of Penn State University grinds me severely; as I can iron-clad guarantee you, it also does to THOUSANDS of PSU Alumni! I can only presume and hope that it affects you in the same manner.
Therefore, what are YOU doing; what action have YOU initiated; what investigation have YOU started in this matter that will expose Professor Mann, remove him from any position remotely associated with TRUE SCIENCE; and dismiss him from Penn State University? The reputation of a once sterling university is hanging by a thread here! Is this once-proud institution to become a laughing stock in scientific circles? What will YOU do to remove the cause of this scandal and restore the integrity of Penn State University?
