A new Rasmussen poll shows the Arizona Senator in a dead heat with potential GOP primary challenger J.D. Hayworth.
BY ALYSSIA FINLEY
John McCain may have been the GOP's national standard-bearer just a year ago, but now he's in electoral trouble at home. And this time no one can claim it's because of Sarah Palin.
A new Rasmussen poll shows the Arizona Senator in a dead heat with potential GOP primary challenger J.D. Hayworth. Mr. Hayworth served as a congressman from 1995 to 2006, when he lost in a squeaker to Democratic Tempe Mayor Harry Mitchell, who prevailed by hounding Mr. Hayworth over his ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Mr. Hayworth now runs a popular Phoenix talk radio show. Though he hasn't formally declared his candidacy, he has expressed interest. According to Arizona Republic columnist Dan Nowicki, Mr. Hayworth is partly motivated by a "long-standing grudge" against McCain aide Mark Salter, whom he has accused of trying to "blackmail" him in 2005 into ceasing his criticism of Mr. McCain's comprehensive immigration reform bill by threatening to publicize Mr. Hayworth's Abramoff connections.
For his part, Mr. Hayworth now says his problems with Mr. Salter would have no impact on his decision about whether to challenge Mr. McCain. "No, I would never run for office, quote, out of spite, but I do have a profound disagreement with Senator John McCain over the concept of amnesty, whether he wants to call it comprehensive immigration reform or a pathway for guest workers to remain," said Mr. Hayworth.

I predict he goes independent
I’d hardly call it an ‘upset’ if McCain lost - more like cleaning house and party time!
That would be a horrible mistake.
Go JD!
"I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have
no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy."
U.S. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, 02 APR. 2004
"I have to tell you, [Obama] is a decent person, a person that you
do not have to be scared [of] as president of the United States."
U.S. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, 10 OCT. 2008
Look at Juan McAmnesty and Sarah Palin TODAY and tell us again who the GOP's national standard-bearer was just a year ago?
Why would he do that ifhe can win the Republican nomination. You only go Independent if you don't care whether you win or not.
Voting a straight Republican ticket is the patriotic thing to do.
The recent Palinmania has me thinking back to McCain’s damp squib of a convention speech.
He started with the ‘my friendshh’ mantra that was supposed to be his grand finale. Baffled conventioneers looked at each other and realized ‘we’re supposed to applaud now!’ It was an embarrassment.
I like the sound of Sen. Hayworth.
If McCain lost I wouldn’t be upset.
No more JUANnabies, including JUAN.
And if Hayworth should beat him, would all of the “moderate” McLame voters support the Republican nominee or throw a hissy fit and either stay home or go over to the other side, because they have their “consciences” to think of?
So he would cede the chance to defeat him in the primary? That makes no sense.
McCain may finish his career as Secretary of Defense in the Palin administration.
Obviously, Sarah’s dragging down the ticket.
/sarcasm
Pull a Leiberman? I would not be surprised. Ironically, that might split the Demo vote more than it does the GOP vote - Dems will get their usual loons, GOP gets its core, and the middle splits evenly between the three instead of clustering over on the Dem side.
Being a RINO in a predominantly conservative country has consequences.
I think Palin Factor is also playing in Arizona. Palin is promoting and nurturing NEW BREEDS OF R/C POLITICIANS.
McCain is definitely an ARCHAIC political species.
THUS, THE PALIN FACTOR IS DRIVING AWAY R/C VOTERS FROM MCCAIN, NOW AN ENDANGERED RINO.
Geesh. It’s still Palin’s fault.
Poor McCain. Instead of being defeated, McCain will be better off if he just willingly passes the TORCH to young, abled CONSERVATIVE.
McManiac, he needs to retire..
I’ve been praying every night for our country. God is hearing us. The globull warming stuff is just an example. Let’s get rid of the old codgers and lifers. I wonder what the final percentages would have been if McCain hadn’t picked Palin.
If the Arizona GOP can unseat McCain, there’s hope for the party. And that means Lindsay Graham’s days are numbered as well. We might even be able to get rid of the Lenin Sisters from Maine. Then we’ll have a party worthy of being called “Grand.”
McCain really wants to retire, I can feel it in my bones....yeah, he does...
Or if you're a conservative running for Congress in a traditionally Democrat district where no Republican is running.
When has McCain not been upset?
McCain has tremendous influence with the GOP. There’s no way he’d support Sarah for president. He’ll want to support someone who endorses his politics which has proved to be a failure. I hope he loses on that premise alone.
Arpaio as Gov. and Hayworth as Senator,I might move back.
RNC...
I wouldn’t have a problem with that. That’s the ONE thing going for McCain.
Go JD!
Oh, yea? You’re trying to convince me there is ever as RAT as conservative as a Republican?
As in Doug Hoffman? Americans are FED UP with politicians and whoever is THE best conservative will win. PERIOD.
Luke 12:2-3
Everything that is secret will be brought out into the open. Everything that is hidden will be uncovered. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight. What you have whispered to someone behind closed doors will be shouted from the rooftops.
Pray that the Truth will win the day, and that our nation returns to revering the Truth second only to reverance for God Himself.

Anyone who says
"I think the Democratic Party is a fine party,
and I have no problems with it,
in their views and their philosophy."
and
"I have to tell you, [Obama] is a decent person,
a person that you do not have to be scared [of]
as president of the United States."
is most assuredly NEITHER a Republican NOR a conservative, no matter what letter follows that person's name.
Electing liberal or "moderate" Big Government "Republicans" who are chomping at the bit to "compromise" with liberal Democrats in a "bipartisan" manner makes about as much sense as destroying capitalism (by bailing out "too big to fail" firms) in order to save it, unless, of course, your agenda is only to obtain and maintain power for the Republican Party, even at the cost of not actually accomplishing genuinely conservative (or conservatarian) goals and objectives.
Adios, Juan. Vaya con Dios.
HASTA LA BYE BYE!
I live in Tempe, az and hope to he removes McCain. Mitchell is against illegals but doesnt stop anything ( healthcare for example ) for illegals if it means crossing party lines
A couple of passing thoughts on John McCain...
It seems to me that with the years often comes not only gray hair and wrinkles, but Dementia as well.
Perhaps though young John was overly coached by his Mother to play well, and get along with others.
There’s always the possibility too that Senator McCain walked through the door thinking “R” meant “restroom”, and not only signed in.
And you also only go independent if you don’t care if the RAT wins.
Exactly! See ya McCain you Kenyan as* kisser. He may have been a POW, but now he is a traitor. Adios amigo.
The Dems may have a hard time just holding onto the Senate in 2010 and a RINO may get the boot.
When—not if—McCain loses, I will be partying and drinking and lighting up some fireworks outside.
Would a McCain loss plunge Lindsey Graham into a deep, deep depression?
Not hardly.
BTW, Al Franken is the face of unprincipled, effete, elitist Republican leaders whose personal agendas do not require them to battle against voter fraud. Third party voters had nothing to do with the public election fraud the nancy boy Republicans aquieced to.
