Fired therapist: Stressed Marines get shoddy care
Associated Press ^ | Nov 20, 2009 | KEVIN MAURER

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marines treated at Camp Lejeune for post-traumatic stress had to undergo therapy for months in temporary trailers where they could hear bomb blasts, machine-gun fire and war cries through the thin walls, according to servicemen and their former psychiatrist.

Wow. Doesn’t surprise me though. And you’re right, this is government care.

Yes, but it could have been worse: their psychiatrist could have been a Jihadi.

At An Khe I got a sweaty guy who looked to be getting his jollies in giving me a palate injection that somehow required six insertions of the needle.

Let me see if I get this right......

They are being treated on Camp Lejeune and it is too stressful to be there because of all the war noises on that base?

I got a great idea send them to DC or Chicago or even Miami where there is no gunfire or helicopters flying around in the middle of the night with their searchlights on at tree top level...

Do I really have to put a sarcasm tag on this post?

The allegations became public after the dismissal of Dr. Kernan Manion, a civilian psychiatrist who says he was fired for writing memos to his military superiors complaining of shoddy care of Marines returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with PTSD, a condition that can make patients jumpy, fearful of loud noises and prone to flashbacks.

That's grounds for dismissal, but they couldn't get rid of Nidal Malik Hasan before he massacred 14 people?

A foolishness tag would be more appropriate.

After 13 months in combat I was stationed at Lejeune in '68-'69 and the most obvious sound that reminded me of VN was choppers overhead. Still does to this day.
Yeah, you could hear some live firing going on from time to time, but WTH, you knew it was training, you knew it was friendly.
I don't know where the PTSD treatment center is located (there was no such thing back in the day), but I seriously doubt if it is - "in such close proximity to the booming of bombs that shake the trailer."
BS BS BS

Maybe it was out at Camp Geiger...

I’ll never forget my first view of Dental,
the cattle car pulled up to the stop in front of
dental and two pogues were waiting at the bus stop
with blood gushing from their mouths, moaning.
Later as I sat in the chair, someone came in
and lathered up my face. Then the dentist came in
and holler’d , “Hey , cut that shit out!”.

Oh yeah, choppers always wake me up, no mistaking
that sound, especially if they are coming toward you.

How Many years did you serve on Camp Lejuene?

I was stationed there for four years, and I can tell you that the ranges where this stuff happens are far away from the actual quarters on bases and that is very deliberate.

The conditions this disgruntled whiner describe don’t exist.

I wasn't in combat and often react to the chopper sound.

That people are affected by experiences even without the extreme of combat.

Is that right? Back in the day it was called LIFE.
Today, someone breaks a fingernail and there's half a dozen grief counselors swarming around them, "Oh, you poooor baby."
Do you think George Patton or Chesty Puller ever went to a PTSD clinic?

non-hackers for sure.

The Corps to it’s credit has really stood tall in supporting our wounded warriors during this War On Terror, and this one scumbag seeks to denigrate all the Corps has done by destroying the reputation of the care they are getting with ridiculous accusations that can be easily dis-proven with a simple map of Camp Lejuene.

AP it seems has no desire to even check his accusations, they make them headlines without even checking the facts.

You never know. I used to hear them firing 155s at Lejeune from Cherry Point while working midcrew.

C'mon, you could tell it was a '55 from 60 miles away? Was it towed or self propelled? Hmmm, I'm thinking one too many trips to the slop chute.
I lived off base in a small town called Hubert ... 12 miles from the base. I very rarely heard anything other than choppers. And I know what arty sounds like - I'm a cannon cocker (hence the screen name).
Hell, we had B-52 strikes in 'Nam that were only a mile or two away that made less noise than what this guy is whining about.

I will tell you what does exist at Lejuene. Too many injured sent back there with no means of treating them.

A good friend of mine was hit with an IED in July. After Rahmstahl, Bethesda and a stint at a facility in Tampa for his TBI, he was sent back to Lejuene. He does have PTSD along with TBI and spinal injuries. He went back in Sept. He has been able to get into therapy only a handful of times, not regularly. He also needs some major back surgery but they have to find a surgeon who can do it.

I took him to the VA here in Atlanta when he was on convalescent leave, I was appalled. It reminded me of going to the Veterinarian on Saturdays when they don’t take appts. People everywhere, long lines everywhere. I thought, this is gov. healthcare.

I don’t blame the people in the VA or any of those in medical positions on the bases, they only have what they have. I do however blame our government for lack of funding.

I personally would much rather have my tax dollars going to veterans than to illegals and other leeches on the system. But then again, anything and everything in Washington is corrupt.

PS, I will tell you that the Marine Corp. did treat the family of this friend with the utmost care and respect. Especially while they were at Rahmstahl, Bethesda and Tampa. I was very impressed with the way they accommodate the family of those injured.

You don’t have to lecture me about the VA hospital in Atlanta, I almost drowned in my own blood there one night, a Vietnam Veteran who could not move or even speak saved my life by alerting the nurses and to this day I don’t know how he did it or what his name was. They would not tell me .

Your friend has two set of problems one is physical and the other mental, the Corps is doing it’s best to take care of both, however our system is overloaded and it is about to get 1000 times worse. When the government takes over health care you can bet VA hospital are going to be opened up to all Americans.

That is not what this disgruntled employee is saying, he is saying that Camp Lejuene is part of the problem, of course he doesn’t tell us how to fix it or what should be done instead he makes blanket accusations I could prove are lies with a simple map. The average citizen has never been on Camp Lejuene and has no idea how large it is or where the live fire ranges are, I do and this man is lying.
