Why should speaking Spanish be expected in the U.S.?

You don’t think English should be.

Let’s see if you can think your way out of this one.

I know, but we are not telling them in the right way. I guess we need to get some kind of music with a hidden message in it or something! LOL.

Hey, I saw the coat store your fellow Ohioans looted a few days ago, because the Ohio nutcake that announced they’d won the lottery and we’re paying, lied....

Too funny!

False. The written exam in Texas is offered in English, German, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. If you don’t speak one of those languages, the test can be administered orally through an interpreter.

I have no problem with expected, but major issues with compelled. If you can’t discern the difference between the two, I doubt my explanation would help.

That would worry me considerably.

We had a yard crew slam through an intersection near here about five to seven years ago. It was a good sized truck, with lots of equipment in the back. It had wood walls on three sides. I’m sure they hauled off branches and the like too.

At any rate, they went down a nearby hill, no brakes, couldn’t stop at the intersection at the bottom. I wondered if they were unable to read the sign that warned of the steep grade. Well, too late now.

I don’t remember all the details now, but I do believe one or more persons lives were instantly snuffed out.

I guess that’s just the price we have to pay for such a good low cost labor force.

That’s the situation and has been for the last twenty years, when all hell broke loose on the border.

I hear ya JoeMac.

What escapes you, is that for an employer “expected” works out to be the same as “compelled” to a perspective employee.

“Let’s see, this person speaks English and this one speaks English and Spanish. I guess I’ll just hire the English only person.”

Is that honestly how you think this plays out?

Wake up and smell the obsolescence.

That is the market at work. Surely you have no truck with employers evaluating the skill of prospective employees when making hiring decisions? The free market will dictate what skills, linguistic or otherwise are of value to an employer. I have no problem with that at all. So long as government is not compelling you to Speak Spanish or not speak Spanish, it’s a non-issue as far as I’m concerned.

Of course it’s a non-issue for you. Big surprise there. You’ve already made your propensity to defend the defenseless obvious.

Melas, you are willing to sell your nation and your fellow citizens out, due to your reverse bias.

It’s a real shame to see.

So Baylor is enabling?. Here we don’t jump through hoops for them and it certainly isn’t expected of our medical personnel. To be fair Baylor is a huge institution with a large patient census. But here, horrors, sometimes our ER doesn’t have anybody on duty who can translate so they use the contract telephone interpreters. My screen name is a big clue about where I am. I still maintain it’s to their detriment not to speak English.

While I’ve never driven in a country where they didn’t speak English...okay, except Scotland, I’m sure you have to demonstrate an understanding of the traffic laws and road signs. This woman’s illegal u-turn and lack of a driver’s license point to something wrong.

What’s your problem with letting the market forces work?

Well I guess we need to get on the same page. There are two parts to securing a drivers license in Texas. Written and driving........ I was referring to the driving portion of the process which is given in English or Spanish only. I have no idea about the written portion.

My thought on the issue of multi-lingual abilities, is that it’s great for people who wish to learn another language. Languages intrigue me. I’ve dabbled a bit, but haven’t learned a second language. Took high school Spanish. Screwed off in that class too. I still picked up some and still use it today, 40 years later. I’d be kidding if I implied I was fluent or even functional in it.

When it comes to what takes place on our soil, I believe there is a best policy and everything else comes in second.

We have English. It’s the primary language and everyone should be fluent. Everyone!

If a person wants to live in the U.S., they should be fluent. It should be a requirement for Citizenship, and even for a residency that goes beyond six months. If you plan on staying here, get into a class and become conversational.

If we wish to adopt another language, then let’s hear what language is better than English and go with it. No matter what language is used, people in the U.S. should adopt that language and become fluent.

Since English is already the dominant language, I see no reason to differ to Spanish, French, Farsi or any other language.

We spend millions of dollars on equipment, change hiring practices, change personnel policies, and jump through hoops, to bend over backward to accommodate everyone else. Wouldn’t it be simpler to explain to everyone else that this is an English speaking nation, and if they want to be here, they need to learn it?

Like you said, when it gets basic enough that people who can’t speak English expose themselves to great physical harm, wouldn’t you think the reasons for this policy would be easy to understand?

We’re a nation of irrational wimps, unable to take a stand even when it’s extremely rational to do so.

What’s your problem with borders and literacy?

The free market does work, but this is not a free market. It’s a market imposed on us by a government that won’t adhere to the U.S. Constitution, or the rules governing naturalization and immigration.

Once again, you’re avoiding the issue. You ignore points or questions in posts to you to flail around in an attempt to offer up poignant comments or questions, that turn out to be silly.

Each day a broader section of the United States is tasked with dealing with people who do not know English.

What that means, is that our nation is being changed by force. That force is an ever expanding body of people from a foreign nation that don’t belong here.

You are I are so compatible! Have you ever seen an advertisement for a well paying job that asked for Spanish speaking only illiterates? They hold themselves back when they don’t learn English.

You been hiding in a cave? Half these greedy corrupt employers look for people that don't speak English, as they know they can pay an illegal alien less money...These greedy SOBs love employees that think company benefits mean a 10 minute break.

Profits regardless of consequences.

Kunkle has been a pretty good Chief. Much better than his predecessor. I’m sure it’s not a law, and he is just following procedure, but it sounds like it ought to be a law.

There was a case last year, where a Texan impersonated an illegal alien, to avoid criminal charges.

No joke.
