Study links 45,000 U.S. deaths to lack of insurance Fri Sep 18, 2009 8:22am EDT

By Susan Heavey

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nearly 45,000 people die in the United States each year -- one every 12 minutes -- in large part because they lack health insurance and can not get good care, Harvard Medical School researchers found in an analysis released on Thursday.

"We're losing more Americans every day because of inaction ... than drunk driving and homicide combined," Dr. David Himmelstein, a co-author of the study and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard, said in an interview with Reuters.

Overall, researchers said American adults age 64 and younger who lack health insurance have a 40 percent higher risk of death than those who have coverage.

The findings come amid a fierce debate over Democrats' efforts to reform the nation's $2.5 trillion U.S. healthcare industry by expanding coverage and reducing healthcare costs.

President Barack Obama's has made the overhaul a top domestic policy priority, but his plan has been besieged by critics and slowed by intense political battles in Congress, with the insurance and healthcare industries fighting some parts of the plan.

If there was ONE death because of lack of insurance that person’s death would be on the front page of EVERY newspaper in the country.

First this demographic is pooer and I bet this demographic is much more likely to engage in behaviors that increase risk of death like drinking, smoking, or criminal behavior. Correlation does not imply causation.

this is nonsense...anyone who WANTS and ACCEPTS health care gets it.....even free meds for many...of course, no one is going to give out oxycotin free but your antibiotics, etc...there free out there someplace...you just have to go thru the channels...community centers, free clinics, even the pharm companies will provide...

America has such a diverse population that these "deaths" come from certain groups more than the general groups.....illegals...new immigrants....gays...alcoholics...druggies....prostitutes...

I work with alcoholics and druggies....the offers are there for rehab and meds, but you can't make them go....

So they’re saying that they can’t afford to see good doctors? Maybe we should look to see about revamping the standards to becoming a doctor since there seem to be so many deaths caused by them.

"...in large part.."

Oh, pish posh! Anyone can walk into an ER and under mandate of federal law they must be treated. Medicaid ad Medicare treats anyone financially unable to get insurance.

More than likely this Obama/ACORN "study" includes illegals and the mentally ill many of whom are have drug and alcohol issues on the street.

I thought Obama was so against scare tactics??

Anyone can walk into emergency and get care.
I just recently had a stupid emergency. I went to urgent care, didn't think it was that bad - it was. Anyway, they gave me an IV pain meds, put me in an ambulance off to emergency arrived was there about 12 hours put in a room and it wasn't until the third day of treatment, tests and all the other junk did they ask me if I had insurance.
Don't tell me people can't get treated.

“Can anyone name someone who was denied health care?”

That’s not what the article is saying. It’s saying those that can’t afford coverage, and have to go somewhere like a clinic or ER, are getting lesser care....which is a load of crap.

This article is because Obama and his MSM allies have been called on what you said about confusing health care coverage and access to health care.

Now they’re going to claim those without insurance get terrible care....more scare tactics.

Wait a minute here. When a drug company funds a study, all hell breaks loose. This was funded by the Government by clearly an advocacy group in an on line journal. Was it peer reviewed? What were the basic questions asked? Are there any confounding variables they “forgot” to include? Was a multiple regresssion using multiple variables studied? Many other questions but it would take too long. Until they open themselves and their data to scrutiny, don’t believe a woed of the results! This is what I would expect of Goebbles!

By “inaction” the writer means the rest of us who aren’t acting to save these sick people. What about the inaction, along with bad decisions, poor morals and lack of discipline of many of those people. Subtract out those to see how many deserve our $100,000 helping hand.

You will never, ever see a study of this sort for a country that already has socialized medicine. Why? Because letting people die because they can’t access care is a goal, not a problem.

What kind of statistical analysis did they use? Only one variable? Did or did not have health insurance? Is there any breakdown of reasons why people didn't have the health insurance? For instance:

(Source: Senate Republican Conference, http://tinyurl.com/l2kt43 )

Looks like about 25 million of them are either eligible for employer or government-sponsored programs, but --- for whatever reason --- have chosen not to enroll, or have sufficient income to purchase a private plan, but have chosen not to.

So now the government is going to FORCE them into plans? Or what? Or, say they have a good plan but they nevr use it --- like my dear husband, say, who is insured but never goes to a doctor, and so has no idea if he has diabetes, or hypertension, or whatever --- are they now going to be forced to go to a doctor?

And the stattistics don't prove anything unless they are matched analyzed for lots of variables: the risk of different injuries and diseases in different job-categories, for starters.

For instance, is it just possible that young men in high-risk industries like construction (90% male) have higher rates of foregoing optional insurance AND higher rates of neglecting preventative medical care AND higher rates of workplace injuries, while women in professions like education and health care (75% female) have far higher rates of having insurance AND utilizing preventative care, WHILE having extremely low rates of workplace injury?

Whole lot of number-crunching going on. And I want to see the numbeers.

And they prove that how???

I suppose i could prove that 45000 die because they do not have access to Harvard medical Centers for free because they charge for their services.
If they REALLY cared, all of their work would be free.

My guess is that a lot of people die without health insurance.

But is that the reason they die? Or was their illness the reason they didn’t have health care? And would health insurance saved them?

The fact is that people die every day. Since 15% of the people don’t have health insurance, it stands to reason that 15% of those who die won’t have health insurance.

So the question is, how did they decide that these deaths were the result of not being able to get health care?
