Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Police Report

"I'll speak with your mama outside," Harvard prof told Cambridge cops

JULY 23--Here are the police reports detailing the confrontation last week between Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge cops, who were condemned last night by President Barack Obama for acting "stupidly" in arresting the African-American scholar. Cops responded to Gates's house after neighbor Lucia Whalen reported spotting "two black males with backpacks" trying to gain entry to the home (Gates, returning home from a trip overseas, and his driver were contending with a stuck front door). The Cambridge Police Department reports, authored by Sergeant James Crowley and Officer James Figueroa, quote an incensed Gates yelling, "This is what happens to black men in America!," and, when asked by Crowley to speak with him outside the residence, Gates replied, "ya, I'll speak with your mama outside." A disorderly conduct rap was filed against Gates, but quickly dropped by prosecutors. Gates is reportedly considering legal action against the Cambridge police. (3 pages)

I used to not be bigoted.

Black bigots like Obama and Gates are making me bigoted; very apparent that they are at war with us, whether or not we are at war with them.

I am normally polite to cops because my daddy taught me to never get in an argument with a man carrying a loaded machine gun (his advice to me upon entering the service)

This police report sounds entirely credible to me.

As I mentioned on an earlier thread, I have met Gates earlier in his career (when he was known by his friends as Skip Gates). His first book was actually pretty good, for black studies. And he was a friendly kind of guy.

Reading this, it becomes obvious that he is now so filled with “black pride” that he has lost any common sense and decency that he once had. He didn’t just lose it for a moment, he lost it completely, and he thoroughly deserved to be brought in for disorderly conduct.

No apology is needed from this police sergeant, he was just doing his job and doing it well. But Skip Gates and Barry Soetoro deserve to be condemned as effete snobs and reverse racists. Or—let’s just drop that “reverse” business. This is racism, pure and simple. Gates and Obama are effete establishment racists of the worst kind.

We are all missing the point here. Lucia Whalen, who made the initial 911 call and observed two black males with back packs at his front door is the real culprit. She just made this up of course because she is the racist and caused the entire incident. Wake up America!

Give the MSM a little time. I'm sure they are busy looking up any unpaid tax liens for Ms. Whalen.

Considering that there were about a dozen witnesses (private citizens minding their own business and other police officers), yes I fully believe the report. There are photos from the scene along with numerous eyewitnesses (neighbors, passers-by, Harvard police, Cambridge police, a Harvard maintenance worker, etc).

If this was a blatantly false report, I’m sure many of these witnesses would have stepped forward by now.

I am struck by one fact. It appears that Mr. Gates is so unfriendly and standoffish ( after all he IS a Harvard person) that his next door neighbor did NOT recognize him.
That may be normal for co-tenants in a 15 story apartment complex, but a little strange for a neighborhood of individual homes.
Not necessarily friendly, or chatting over the fence, of taking walks together, or playing bridge, but NOT EVEN KNOWING BY SIGHT???

It is easy to explain why she did not recognize Gates, he had his back to her. What’s her eyesight?

There had been an earlier break-in attempt. Probably more in the neighborhood.

She’s being a GOOD neighbor!

What’s the point of yelling at the police?

You can look at it another way.

The door doesn't work because of a recent break-in attempt. A neighbor who doesn't know you sees you trying to force your way into your own home and reports it to the police. The police show up.

So far the system is working pretty well, except you don't know your own neighbors.

Gates should be happy that the police and his neighbors are watching out for his property, that is obviously under threat.

By the way, where are all the cop haters on this thread?

I agree....she did not have to make that CALL!

And she was BRAVE to honor the policeman's request for her to appear at the site of the incident while it was being resolved.

SHE WAS AND IS A GOOD NEIGHBOR.

I think gates needs a bit of mail from me explaining to him why he so desparately needs to take a class in civility and graciousness and perhaps he shouls committ to some community service to make up for his BRUTAL and SICK and CHLIDISH and UNWARRANTED DISPLAY of DISRESPECT and ANIMOSITY towards the police. It was ATROCIOUS and HARVARD should be EMBARRASSED.

I’ve looked for Gates’ account and can’t find one. Do you have a link? A narrative please, not just some sound bites.

With the other people present and Gates’ willingness to have the maintenance man take responsibility for the house, the police report seems to be reasonable.

Why didn’t he just show the cops some ID when asked and explain he had misplaced his key? Instead of ranting and race baiting. But then how would he have drawn a crowd? The cops wanted to be sure he was the home’s owner. He ought to be glad that an apparent break in was reported and responded to, since he’d had a break in earlier.

By the way, where are all the cop haters on this thread?

That's like asking "where are all the immigrant haters?". You won't find any here at FR.

What you WILL find are a whole bunch of "out of contol cop" haters.

Including me.

I realize you are falling all over yourself to find a cop hater, just as the Leftists in the media fall over themselves to find immigrant haters. Neither of those will be found at FR. I hate neither immigrant or cops.

As with the Leftists in the media, you are reduced to twisting the truth into a lie to make your point.

You find yourself in questionable company.

Wow...that is just...hmmm. That article explains what I had figured about the Professor, but it’s quite clear here. He seems to be obsessed with race and has a gigantic chip on his shoulder. My favorite quote is here:

“Is it right for African Americans to use the N word? Pitufo Geiger BAGUIO CITY, PHILIPPINES

(Gates): I was raised hearing black people using the N word, and I don’t find it offensive at all. I do find it offensive when a nonblack person uses it.”

The entire situation reeks of an orchestrated stunt by the “victim” and perhaps collaborators. I am not buying any of it. This whole thing stinks on way too many levels, very high levels included.
