More than one in five of all children in the United States are Hispanic – a significant jump from 29 years ago when only about 9 percent of children were Latino, according to a Pew Hispanic report released today.

The study, called "Latino Children: A majority are U.S.-Born offspring of Immigrants," states that more than half of the nation's 16 million Latino children are now "second generation," which means they are the U.S.-born children of at least one foreign-born parent. In California the number of second generation Latino children is 62 percent.

"The school dropout rate in California is one in four and in LA one in three.

This is the real immigration problem. When we had nearly unchecked immigration during the first 30 or so years of last century, the country wasn't a welfare state. The immigrants worked or they starved - most worked, but admittedly some turned to crime. All in all, that immigration boom was a benefit to the country.

Plus, there was a large "salt water guillotine" (as George Will puts it) that forced the Italians, the French, The Polish, the Irish etc. etc to assimilate. Now, with the acceptance of the Spanish language, the ubiquity of Spanish entertainment options and cheap and abundant travel back to their home country, the Latinos even in the second generation are not assimilating.

Although I'm not entirely pleased with some of the racial overtones of this debate, it's silly to think that the flood of immigrants under current conditions won't cause lasting harm to the Republic.

I agree, but you will be amazed how fast that 1 in 5 becomes 1 in 2. It won’t be 2050. It will be more like 2025.

“The millions of them in the streets DEMANDING and protesting over the last few years proves the majority of ‘hispanics’ indeed are liberal, anti-american, pro-illegal immigration.”

Millions of whites are also liberal anti-american, and pro-illegal immigration. How do you think Obama got elected.

I agree most posts on Freerepublic, I donate on a small amount on a monthly basis. I just do not like to be labeled and targeted because of my name or my appearence. I have a hard enough time argueing with socialist idiots at work.

Hey DoughtyOne,

I know what you say is true. I myself went to No Hollywood High in the seventies, had friends who were Mexican and even Arabic but spoke English and were Americans first.

It only took a few years after that for things to take a dive in the wrong direction.

The only problems I had with school were flat out lazy teachers. Class time was mostly reading but not because they were busy teaching ESL, they were just uninvolved and could care less, with the exception of few of course.

To top it off, I think it was on Drudge, but this new nominee is possibly a MENCHA member...wonderful, huh?

I grew up in an immigrant neighborhood and am married to an immigrant. My grandmother was an immigrant. The problem is that the numbers today are so large, we can’t assimilate them. And since they are mostly Hispanic, a critical mass is being reached where the immigrants are demanding that we accommodate our culture, language, etc. to their’s instead of the other way around. And there is also the political dimension since 87% of the 1.2 million legal immigrants who enter annually are minorities, as defined by the USG. Immigrants and minorities vote predominantly Democrat.

I could care less what race they are, as long as they adopt American values and appreciate living in this country, I say, ‘Welcome’.

It would probably be more accurate for you to say you couldn't care less, meaning that your current level of caring on the matter is at zero. Saying you could care less doesn't give any indication as to your current level of caring, other than it's not at zero.

Who did that? Mass legal and illegal immigration from south of the border is what I was attacking. If that isn’t what you promote, then why do you feel you were attacked? I get attacked every day over my name, race, political opinions. Every single day. That’s the nature of American politics, and unfortunately many new immigrants, mostly Latino want that discussion stopped when it comes to them.

If someone attacked you over your name, they’re an idiot.

Yes, she’s a real jewel.

I guess people get to be my age 58, and often think the nation is going to hell in a hand basket. I do think my generation has more reasons to think that way than those before it though.

You wouldn’t recognize the San Fernando valley these days.

Van Nuys boulevard looks like it was uprooted and planted just outside Tijuana. At Roscoe and Van Nuy’s boulevard, I was actually warned to stay out of the area at night because I’m White, and the gang activity is heavy.

It’s really sad. We go from American Graffiti to this in thirty years.

Said the same thing about the Irish.

The Irish culture and the American culture are very similar cultures. The Mexican/Hispanic culture and the American culture are very dissimilar cultures.

The problem is when immigrants don’t want to become a part of the culture that made the country great, and bring with them the culture that made their country a shithole that they had to escape from, and try to establish that culture here.

Just like yankees moving down south.

"We go from American Graffiti to this in thirty years."

One of the truest and saddest comments in quite some time.

The entire mess, of course, was brought to us by our corrupt corps of elite politician in Washington.

I got on an elevator the other day with three Indians(dot not feathers), 2 Chinese and 2 Mexicans and wondered to myself how soon before American white and black people are a minority in our own country.

Well, at least George W. Bush is happy.
He did more then the Dims to help them.
We just don’t want the bad guys here.

Too bad all those “Latinos” aren’t voting Republican.

Most Latinos are not lazy. Go FREE ENTERPRISE, young feller!

Years ago, there was a Sci-Fi series about a man from the future sent back to find a mad scientist of some crap. In the future, the world (North America) was dominated by Mexicans (Hispanics for you PC culturally significant appeasers). In ‘his’ world, he was the minority. Their (the Mexicans’) term for white people was ‘Blanco’. Seems like this is coming true sooner than one might think.
