New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd admits inadvertently using blogger's words as her own

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd has admitted to using a paragraph virtually word-for-word from a prominent liberal blogger without attribution.

Dowd acknowledged the error in an e-mail to the Huffington Post on Sunday, the Web site reported. The Times corrected her column online to give proper credit for the material to Talking Points Memo editor Josh Marshall.

The newspaper is expected to issue a formal correction Monday. A request for comment from The Associated Press was not immediately returned by the Times late Sunday.

The error appeared in Dowd's Sunday column, in which she criticized the Bush administration's use of interrogation methods in the run-up to the Iraq war.

In the original column, Dowd wrote: "More and more the timeline is raising the question of why, if the torture was to prevent terrorist attacks, it seemed to happen mainly during the period when the Bush crowd was looking for what was essentially political information to justify the invasion of Iraq."

Marshall last week wrote virtually the same sentence. But where Dowd's column used the phrase "the Bush crowd was," Marshall used "we were."

Short answer: by getting so used to doing it that you don’t notice anymore.

She claims she never read Marshall's post last week and had heard the line from a friend who did not mention reading it in Marshall's blog.

HEARD the phrase? Her friend just happened to quote it verbatim and she wrote down EXACTLY what the friend said? And through that process, Dowd managed to get a word-for-word transcript less one small tweak? Holy billion monkeys, Batman, will she "write" Shakespeare next week? Even Pelosi could come up with a better excuse than this.

"The error appeared in Dowd's Sunday column"

Error? Error?

error : an act involving an unintentional deviation from truth or accuracy.

This was no "unintentional deviation" by MoDo. In fact, it couldn't have been more intentional.

http://www.nytpick.com/2009/05/dowd-admits-plagiarism-to-nytpicker.html

Maureen Dowd has sent the NYTPicker this comment on today’s accusations that she may have plagiarized a portion of her Sunday column from Joshua Micah Marshall of Talking Points Memo:

josh is right. I didn’t read his blog last week, and didn’t have any idea he had made that point until you informed me just now.
i was talking to a friend of mine Friday about what I was writing who suggested I make this point, expressing it in a cogent — and I assumed spontaneous — way and I wanted to weave the idea into my column.
but, clearly, my friend must have read josh marshall without mentioning that to me.
we’re fixing it on the web, to give josh credit, and will include a note, as well as a formal correction tomorrow.

“Even Pelosi could come up with a better excuse than this.”

She’s also saying that she didn’t rip-off Marshall, she ripped-off a friend, so it’s ok.

How much has Dowd submitted as her own work that had been created by ‘friends’?

It is impossible to inadvertently plagiarize. I am a professional writer. You write what you write. If you are stealing the words of another, you know it.

How does one inadvertently plagerize?

Perhaps she intended to plagiarize something else and inadvertently plagerized this.

And look at the single change she made in the plagiarized copy - she virtually penned in “Bush did it.” You just can’t make this stuff up, it’s too low to imagine if you’re sane. You just have to wait and observe the Leftists crawling around enacting it - and the liberals crawling right after them in the trails they leave behind.

LOL! That's the only logical explanation.

I had a columnist copy one of my posts also. When I contacted him he couldn't care less. I was more happy that my ideas got out then I was sad for being plagiarized
