LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Hospital officials say 10 children drank windshield wiper fluid after staffers at an Arkansas daycare center mistook the liquid for Kool-Aid.

A pediatrician at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock says the children, ages 2 to 6, are OK, but continue to be monitored. The doctor said each child drank about an ounce late Thursday afternoon.

The hospital did not identify the Scott community daycare. State child welfare officials did not immediately return a call for comment Friday.

The fluid contained toxic alcohols. A pediatric toxicologist says those chemicals can cause kidney damage and blindness.

Funny, I thought that day care was supposed to be better for children than those awful parents. Previously employed at a Jim Jones daycare center near you?

My mother-in-law when babysitting gave my kids chicken nuggets with Famous Dave’s Devil Spit BBQ sauce.

More than one daycare worker was involved. But of course, I was talking about the spokeswoman for the Department of Human Services. So apparently you’re right. Literacy is not universal.

When the "lemon" type dish washing liquids first came out there were a whole slew of poisonings among adults who couldn't read, and thought it was a fruit drink. The pictures of lemon slices on the label did the trick.

Time to outlaw kool aide or at least enact strict kool aide laws

Why are the kids drinking kool aid anyway? When I was a day care director, we were required to serve real fruit juice — and I think that was a USDA requirement.

Holy hangover, did you see the treatment for methenol ingestion? Ethonol, and lots of it!

But I will bet you dollars to donuts the windshield washer fluid in this story was the orange kind.

The pink'ish variety has been on the market for some time now. My bet goes with the pink stuff.

* Specific antidote is ethanol and this should be given IV as a 10% solution in 5% dextrose A loading dose of 0.6g/kg should be given followed by an lVI of 0.07g/kg/hr for non-drinkers (regular drinkers should receive 0. 16g/kg/hr):

Ethanol levels should be checked to ensure they are within the treatment range 1-1.5g/L (21.7-32.6 mmol/L). Ethanol should be given to: (1) all patients pending MeOH levels and then those >0.2g/L (6.25 mmol/L); (2) acidotic patients; (3) anyone needing haemodialysis.

That's 0.1%-0.15% blood alcohol level, ie. pretty well toasted unless you're a pro drinker. Then keep it coming to keep the level up.

I don't know about methanol, but with normal antifreeze the problem is that the body breaks it down into insoluble compounds which plug things up. The ethanol has to be kept high enough to keep those compounds disolved.

It's called the "Mojito Protocol." And no, the Day Care Center people cannot read.

I don’t think the change is complete yet but in process, of course it is to protect animals.
