CHICAGO — Nearly 100 teens marched outside Chicago police headquarters Thursday night to protest the department''s plans to equip officers with semi-automatic rifles, saying the weapons could make the streets more dangerous.
Carrying signs like "Stop the War on Youth," teens said they didn''t trust police with the high-powered weapons and worried gangs would be encouraged to bolster their own arsenals.
"The only people who need these guns are in Iraq," said Arthur McGraw, 19, an organizer with the nonprofit Southwest Youth Collaborative, which organized the rally. "It''ll shoot through brick, car doors. Say your family is in the house eating and there''s some gang violence. When they shoot these [the bullets] can come into your house and shoot your kids."
Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Thursday that though police have ordered and received some of the guns, police are not yet using them. Their use will be phased in over the next three years.
In April police Supt. Jody Weis said he wanted to equip all of the department''s officers with the high-powered weapons as part of an overall crime-fighting strategy, arguing that officers are outgunned on the streets. Officers currently carry pistols, and only SWAT officers carry rifles, M4 carbines.
Mayor Richard Daley publicly backed Weis'' plan, saying the rifles would put officers on equal footing with armed gangs and criminals.

If they can get these deemed unacceptable for police, they will use that against the average person having one.

The police should not be allowed to have any weapons that those in their jurisdiction can’t have.
IMHO, gun control laws should apply to the police as well. Let’s see how many of them support gun control then.

Well they are supposed to be dangerous. That is the whole idea of weapons.
Actually that is a pretty good point about the staying power of the bullet. If the cops start blasting away and stray bullets are flying everywhere, it is better if it is a pistol round than hi powered rifle.

seeing how it is Chicago, the assualt rifles aren't going to do a whole lot of good. If they were truly serious about wanting to out-gun the gangs, they'd set up some 155 batteries along South Shore Drive...maybe station a few cruisers with 8" canons out in Lake Michigan for back-up...
Ummm... is he talking about the Police or the gangs? I think the number of innocent children shot by gangs as opposed to Police is about 10,000 to 1.
The grabbers have been saying for years that the only application for an “assault rifle” is “killing large numbers of people.”
My counter was to point out that cops had “assault rifles” and ask whether the cops read these people their rights before they killed them ?
In all fairness, under what circumstances is a Chicago PD street officer going to need a fully- or even semi-automatic rifle with a range and penetration factor greater than he can see?
If you think people get upset when a cop makes a good shoot on a bad guy, wait until a child gets killed by a police ricochet or over-penetration by an assault rifle.
Taking them away from the cops after that will only add more fuel to the movement to take them away from citizens. And I don’t think the MSM or Obamanation will come to our aid.
