Loading... Must Read?Thank You Yes 39HARTFORD, Conn. — A generation ago the Republican Party was the dominant political force in New England, populating the region's congressional delegations with moderates like Connecticut's Lowell P. Weicker Jr. and Rhode Island's John Chafee.
But today's GOP, led by a more socially conservative wing of the party, is finding votes harder to come by.
Voters on Tuesday cast out Connecticut's veteran Rep. Chris Shays, the last New England Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives. Sen. John Sununu was voted out in New Hampshire, leaving that state's Judd Gregg and Maine's Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe as the only Republicans among the region's 12 senators.
Shays' loss to former Goldman Sachs executive Jim Himes marks the first time since 1969 that southwestern Connecticut will be represented by a Democrat in the House.
"I felt that we were going to win this, I really did," Shays told supporters. "I felt that people were so good to me, they were so nice to me. But they were deciding they were going to go the other way."
New England's decision to "go the other way" in recent elections is a dramatic transformation for a region considered a Republican stronghold a generation ago.

I think the majority of problems in the Northeast and Florida too come from the spread of the Massholes as the libbing of the West has been brought about by the immigration of the Kalifornicators throughout the West. The premise has been floated here many times regarding the people moving from the totally blue states where they can no longer afford to live and then taking the same politically repulsive policies along with them to ruin their next home state. Sad!
Well, I can’t prove a negative. No one knows what might have happened if, say, duncan hunter or Fred Thompson would have run. But hold on, they did...and they got voted down.
I think conservatism is not as popular as you fondly think.
Yeah, I guess from your point of view the only course of action is indeed to purge the GOP of all those “impure” voices that curiously happen to support it.
Implosion beckons. Obscurity beckons actually.
Poll after poll proves that a majority of the nation supports conservative positions. And the presidential elections I cited also prove it. Hell, even the last Congressional election supports it---the Demos won largely because they ran "more conservative" (i.e. anti-abortion, pro-gun ownership) Democrats in many areas of red states, hand-selected by Rahm Emanuelle, specifically to put the sheep-skin over the Democrat wolf.
If it isn't today - it soon will be.
Americans are going to absolutely stunned over the next few years.
I agree...unfortunately, BO can do a lot of damage in those few years.
