Palin's lawyers blast Troopergate findings
Houston Chronicle ^ | 10/11/08 | Kim Murphy

Lawyers for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin assailed the legislative inquiry released Friday that found the governor abused her authority in a campaign to remove her former brother-in-law as a state trooper, saying the report misconstrues the state ethics law in an attempt to "smear" the Republican vice-presidential nominee.

In a biting response to the report by investigator Stephen Branchflower for Alaska's bipartisan Legislative Council, Anchorage attorney Thomas Van Flein and his partners said the ethics law that Branchflower says was violated is intended to address cases in which a public official has a financial interest, not merely a personal one.

"There is no accusation, no finding and no facts that money or financial gain to the governor was involved," Van Flein said in a letter in reference to the decision in July to replace former public safety commissioner Walt Monegan.

The Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act states: "The Legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust." Palin's lawyers on Saturday did not return calls.

'Legitimate' reasons

Monegan had resisted pressure from the governor to fire trooper Mike Wooten, who had been involved in a messy divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister. The Palins had complained Wooten had committed behavior inappropriate for a state trooper, including firing a Taser at his stepson, threatening Palin's father and driving his patrol car under the influence of alcohol.

This report was just a bunch of obnoxious flatulence from the Alaskan Good Old Boys Club. Kind of like Hollis French telling some little kid to pull his finger.

I disagree. Strong statements have been released, and this is fading. Why start ranting about it in interviews or on the campaign trail?
Talk about fueling the fire and causing a big distraction.

I read every word of that amateurish report. Any Constitutional lawyer worth their salt would blow it right out of court in a challenge.

This report would be a High School Civics project that would receive a C-, at best.

Meet the Investigators. No, I am not kidding.

Obama thugs include Democrat Hollis French, who supervised the “investigation,” the bald creep near the back (fifth from left). The guy charged with keeping French honest is State Senator Kim Elton (the bearded goon on the far left).

Why don't they investigate if a SITTING U. S. SENATOR, ON TAX PAYERS MONEY, overstepped his bounds when he went to a foreign country and campaigned for a man running for the head of said country? (Kenya)

Kenya certainly didn't like it. “Obama’s Kenya ‘honeymoon’ ends abruptly after graft rebuke ...” A gov’t spokesman said: “
“It is now clear that he was speaking out of ignorance and does not understand Kenyan politics, we earlier thought he was mature in his assessment of Kenyan and African politics,” Mutua told AFP.

“We forgive him because it is his first time in the Senate and he is yet to mature into understanding issues of foreign policy,” he said. “

And since returning to the U.S., he's been running for president....

This has to be repeated:The governor of a state is the chief law enforcement officer! As a witness to officer's Wooten's conduct, she every right and duty to protect fellow citizens, even those who may be related to her.

She can explain it in that manner and ask that the voters decide if her conduct was out of line.

When a committee finds wrong doing on a democrat, they always scream “partisan”.

A picture truely is worth a thousand words! If Sarah or McCain are asked again, they should just say...let me show you the investigators. Then whip out this photo.

And .. I hope all the members of any police unit chime in on this issue.

Here’s my 2 Cents: Having worked in a police unit, I can tell you there is nothing more hated in your unit than an officer who steps on the law and mistreats people. Dealing with bad guys is what the job entails, but tasoring your own child is just beyond the pale.

If you have one bad apple in the bunch - it demoralizes the whole bunch. I believe the Governor of any state should have the power to FIRE or DISMISS any trooper employed by the state .. especially after committing such an act as tasoring their own child.

Whether he was an ex-brother-in-law or not .. is immaterial .. as a State Trooper - the bozo represented the STATE - and the Governor should have done whatever it took to get that kind of officer off the payroll.

This whole case was ANOTHER MANUFACTURED CRISIS by the democrats .. to damage Sarah .. it didn’t work .. because there was no evidence that she fired the cabinet member - because SHE DIDN’T FIRE HIM - HE RESIGNED.

I’m so sick of these democrats who are so filled with hate.

And .. when we say “we’re mad” they turn it around and say we preaching hate .. when in reality it’s the dems who are the haters. I fed up with the whole bunch of them.

Nice looking diverse crowd and I’m sure that none of these were ever Sarah Palin supporters!
