US and Poland agree shield deal

Breaking News

The US and Poland have agreed a preliminary deal on plans for the controversial US defence shield, Warsaw has announced.

The plan would see the US base 10 missile interceptors in Poland in exchange for help strengthening Polish defences, said PM Donald Tusk.

The scheme is highly controversial and has been opposed by Russia.

Poland is reported to have demanded security help after Moscow threatened to target its missiles at the bases.

The Polish Foreign Ministry told the PAP news agency that the deal would be signed at 1800 GMT.

The US signed a deal with the Czech Republic in July to base tracking radars there as part of the missile defence system.

The US wants the sites to be in operation by about 2012.

Russia has expressed concern about the system in the past, with one official saying the deal "complicates" global security.

Russia wrote off Poland some time ago. But they will use this as a pretext to go after Ukraine.

10 missile SYSTEMS. They are relatively complicated - but even so - 4 years? Maybe it’s misinformation.

I wonder if the Russian foray into Georgia speeded up the decision to let the missiles be based in Poland.

So far, Bush is playing this situation quite well.

We need to support democracy, wherever it is.

Just my opinion.... 8^)

Good thing there are not enclaves of ethnic russian separatists in poland. Lots of russian mafia but no enclaves. (Did you know there are handfuls of muzzies from the real bad old days in some villages there, too?)

Yup. 4 years. These things are based in underground silos that have yet to be built. Plus a bunch of in-ground infrastructure that isn’t there. Construction that has been on hold because of politics, in a country that has its fair share of crappy weather. Plus, we’re still working on some of that stuff here in the US for our local shield as well, which I imagine is going to get some upgrades now that the Russkies are misbehaving. I’d expect that the base in Alaska may get a few more launchers installed, plus the ones at Vandenberg.

Definitely.

One of Poland’s conditions to agree to host that base was, that U.S. will station Patriot missiles in Poland too.

U.S. didn’t want to accept this demand, as they were afraid such a move would piss off the Russians (as it would be clearly protection against possible Russian attack).

Now I think they don’t care about that anymore.

The Germans have so much eurocoin invested in poland now (for the cheaper but educated labor) that they might even raise a finger to help those brave poles face down a bear charge.

“The US wants the sites to be in operation by about 2012”

Baloney. Do it right now before Bush leaves office.

After what Russia did to Georgia, there is nothing “highly controversial” about the move.

Thank you, Poland!

According to the media - one of the parts of this agreement is, that U.S will react with all its power if Poland’s is attacked by a “third party”.

The “third party” must be really pissed off this evening :-)))

Did Poland see the fine print about the agreement being void if Obama wins?

The scheme is highly controversial ...

"Sceme"? And "highly controversial" always means that it is something that makes socialists want to pee themselves.
