Happy Thanksgiving from Zabul Province, Afghanistan.

The Taliban seem to be mostly afraid of American soldiers. They do attack
U.S. and inflict damage, but all around I hear from Afghans and U.S.
soldiers that the Taliban are mostly trying to avoid contact with U.S.,
while focusing attacks mostly on Afghans. Some people see the Taliban as
courageous, but I am seeing more and more that they use cowardly tactics,
often hiding behind women and children.

I am tonight in Zabul Province and have been out with New York National
Guard. Their morale is high and they think they are winning the fight,
despite the long series of frustrations that come with the terrain of war.
Especially in Afghanistan.

Our cell phones are not working tonight; the Taliban forces cell phone
operators to turn off the towers at night. The Taliban are afraid of being
tracked, and are afraid the Americans will interrupt their sleep. The cell
towers are cut off from 5:30 PM to 7:00 AM. An American captain told me
that one group of operators decided to turn off the system late one night,
so the Taliban came, killed one man, and tortured two others.

On an interesting side, Americans and Afghans are giving very high marks to
the Lithuanian Special Forces who operate here. They are less impressed
with Romanians; Afghans and Americans say the Romanians are afraid of the
Taliban, but that the Lithuanians are having a field day chasing and killing
Taliban.

On the Iraq front, please read Down with Barriers, Up with Iraq.

The Iraq war is over, but the Afghan playoffs will begin in 2009. This
fight is just getting started. Please send lots of Marines, and lots of
training teams for the Afghan Army and police.

Your correspondent,
Michael Yon

Treasury Designates Mugabe Regime Cronies

November 25, 2008
HP-1295

Treasury Designates Mugabe Regime Cronies

Washington, DC—The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today designated four Mugabe regime cronies and a number of entities owned or controlled by two of them. The financial and logistical support they have provided to the regime has enabled Robert Mugabe to pursue policies that seriously undermine democratic processes and institutions in Zimbabwe .

“The Mugabe regime continues to resist the call of the Zimbabwean people to loosen its corrupt and violent hold on power,” said OFAC Director Adam J. Szubin. “The United States supports the people of Zimbabwe in their struggle to achieve a political and economic system built on fairness and transparency rather than patronage and self-dealing.”

Today’s designations include John Bredenkamp, a well-known Mugabe insider involved in various business activities, including tobacco trading, gray-market arms trading and trafficking, equity investments, oil distribution, tourism, sports management, and diamond extraction. Through a sophisticated web of companies, Bredenkamp has financially propped up the regime and provided other support to a number of its high-ranking officials. He also has financed and provided logistical support to a number of Zimbabwean parastatal entities.

The following entities owned or controlled by John Bredenkamp also are designated: Alpha International (Private) Ltd., Breco (Asia Pacific) Ltd., Breco (Eastern Europe) Ltd., Breco (South Africa) Ltd., Breco (U.K.) Ltd., Breco Group, Breco International, Breco Nominees Ltd., Breco Services Ltd., Corybantes Ltd., Echo Delta Holdings Ltd., Kababankola Mining Company, Masters International Ltd., Masters International, Inc., Piedmont (UK) Limited, Raceview Enterprises, Scottlee Holdings (Pvt) Ltd., Scottlee Resorts, Timpani Ltd., and Tremalt Ltd.

Also designated today is Muller Conrad Rautenbach (a.k.a. Billy Rautenbach). Billy Rautenbach is a Zimbabwean businessman who has maintained close relations with the Mugabe regime. He has provided support to senior regime officials during Zimbabwe’s intervention in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and also provided logistical support for large-scale mining projects in Zimbabwe that benefit a small number of corrupt senior officials there. Today’s designations include an entity owned and controlled by Billy Rautenbach, Ridgepoint Overseas Developments Limited.

In addition, OFAC is designating Nalinee Joy Taveesin, a Thai businesswoman who has facilitated a number of financial, real-estate, and gem-related transactions on behalf of Grace Mugabe, Gideon Gono, and a number of other Zimbabwean Specially Designated Nationals (SDNs). Ironically, Nalinee Taveesin has participated in a number of initiatives on corruption and growth challenges in Africa and Southeast Asia while secretly supporting the kleptocratic practices of one of Africa ‘s most corrupt regimes.

Finally, OFAC is designating Mahmood Awang Kechik, a Malaysian urologist and one of Robert Mugabe’s physicians and business advisors. Kechik has used his medical practice to conceal the ultimate destination of medical equipment shipped to Zimbabwe , and he has transacted secretly with a number of SDNs, including Gideon Gono and Constantine Chiwenga, to generate wealth for these regime officials and the Government of Zimbabwe.

Today’s action was taken pursuant to Executive Order 13469, which targets, among others, individuals and entities who provide financial and other support to the Government of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwean SDNs. As a result of Treasury’s action, any assets of the individuals and entities designated today that are within U.S. jurisdiction must be frozen. Additionally, U.S. persons are prohibited from conducting financial or commercial transactions with these individuals or entities.

Two more members of the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF) have been arrested. They are named only as “Daniel P.” (26) and “Harun Can A.” (23). They join German “Irfan P” (19) and Austrian “Mohamed M.” as GIMF members being prosecuted in Germany & Austria for the collection, translation, and distribution of al Qaeda propaganda and for their encouragement of European Muslims to support violent jihad.

Mohammed M., who with the help of Aaron from Internet Haganah we identified as Mohammed Mahmoud, is the former leader of GIMF and is currently serving time for a plot to plant explosives at U.S. military bases in Europe. His wife was also convicted.

“Irfan P.” was already in custody for translating statements from al Qaeda in Iraq and has now been charged with 10 counts of disseminating AQI propaganda. “Daniel P” is charged with 18 counts and “Harun Can A.” is charged with four.

GIMF was once an important group to the online jihad support community, many of whom don’t speak Arabic. GIMF’s main contribution was in translating Arabic statements into German, French, and English for wider dissemination. They also produced independent videos supportive of al Qaeda in Iraq and of Chechen Islamists. At one time the group ran a 24 hour online television station—The Caliphate Voice Channel. Members of the group were also responsible for “The Night of Bush Capturing” video game (below).

A Canadian GIMF member, Said Namouh (aka, “Nashraf”), helped out with English language propaganda before he was arrested for plotting terror attacks. Not so coincidentally, the group has its roots in the Yahoo “Global Islamic Media” group run by influential early Cnadian cyber jihadi called Abu Banan.

In addition to simply encouraging others to join al Qaeda and other Salafi jihad groups, the GIMF also raised money for them. GIMF is also well connected to al Qaeda branches in Somalia (they released a video of an American fighting in Somalia) and Palestine (it was GIMF that released the videos of a Fox News reporter being held hostage there).

I’ll also note that while Charlotte based al Qaeda supporter Samir Khan (aka, “inshallahshaheed”) claims he has no formal connection to the GIMF, the GIMF certainly knew Samir.

Yet another friend of Sammy in jail......

Germans held in Kosovo over blast

A Kosovan judge has ordered three Germans suspected of throwing an explosive device at the EU headquarters in Pristina to be held for 30 days.

The three reportedly deny involvement in the attack on 14 November, saying they were detained while investigating it themselves.

Windows in the glass-fronted building were shattered but nobody was hurt.

German and Kosovo media report that the men are German intelligence agents but officials in Berlin refuse to comment.

Lawyers for the detainees say the prosecution is seeking terrorism charges that carry a maximum 20-year sentence.

A spokesman for the German foreign ministry in Berlin confirmed that three Germans had been arrested on Thursday, but declined to make any further comment as an investigation was under way.

The German weekly Der Spiegel said the men worked for the German intelligence agency BND, and that they told investigators they had been examining the scene of the explosion, but had not been involved in it.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February after nine years under UN stewardship and is recognised by more than 50 countries, including Germany.

Four days before the bomb attack, Kosovo’s Albanian majority rejected an agreement between the UN and Serbia on the deployment of the much-delayed EU police and justice mission Eulex.

Are you in Pristina? Have you been affected by these events, or have you seen or heard anything? Send your comments or pictures using the form below.

Georgia Qualifies Presidential Convoy Shots as Terrorism
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 25 Nov.’08 / 13:00

Georgia has launched criminal investigation into the shooting incident that occurred when a motorcade carrying the Georgian and Polish Presidents approached the South Ossetian administrative border, formally qualifying the case as “terrorism,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement on November 24.

“Shots were fired from the Russian checkpoint located at the village of Odzisi in the Akhalgori district,” the Georgian Interior Ministry said. “That checkpoint, which is located in the heart of the Georgian territory, represents the violation of the six-point ceasefire agreement and is a symbol of Georgia’s occupation by Russia.”

International Reaction on Presidential Convoy Shots
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 25 Nov.’08 / 00:26

NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hood Scheffer, and EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, made reserved comments about a shooting incident that took place when a motorcade, carrying the Georgian and Polish Presidents, approached a South Ossetian administrative border on November 23.

‘I don’t know exactly what happened,” the Deutsche Welle reported quoting Scheffer. “It is wrong and certainly not in the spirit of the [ceasefire] agreement.”

“We are not blaming anyone, but I blame certainly those who started the shooting,” he added.

Solana said that he was in contact with EU monitors on the ground and waiting for their report.

Sean McCormack, U.S. Department of States spokesman, said there have been “conflicting reports” about the incident.

“I have obviously seen the statements from the two presidents involved. I can’t confirm one way or the other,” he said at a news briefing on November 24. “What’s important here and what – you know, what these kinds of news reports and allegations make clear is the importance of effectively deploying all of the monitors in this region, and also working on all the various tracks of the ceasefire so that there is a more peaceful and better situation in Georgia for everybody.”

Meanwhile, Polish President, Lec Kaczynski, said in Poland after he returned back from Georgia, that he believed that the Russian soldiers fired shorts when he and his Georgian counterpart approached the South Ossetian administrative border.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a political rival of Kaczynski, said on November 24 that he had ordered a detailed report to be drawn up on the shooting incident, Reuters reported. “Nowhere in the world can the Polish president be put at such risk,” he told reporters during in London.

Meanwhile in Warsaw, foreign ministers from the Visegrad Group of states including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia as well as the three EU Baltic states, Bulgaria, Romania and Sweden condemned the incident and called for an investigation, the Deutsche Welle reported.

“The ministers express deepest concern and strongly condemn the incident in Georgia on 23 November 2008 when machine-gun fire was opened in immediate vicinity of a motorcade carrying the presidents of Georgia and Poland, close to South Ossetia, Georgia,” the minister said in a joint statement. “The Ministers call for proper investigation and clarification of the incident.”

FOX NEWS Somalian Terror Organization Shabaab al Mujahideen Looks to ‘Throw the West Into Hell’, Al-Shabaab has it’s website in Vancouver WA, USA
FOX NEWS...Editors Note: This story is the first in a FOXNews.com series that takes a closer look at State Department-designated terror organizations that are considered to pose a threat to United States security.

In the summer of 2007, a 28-year-old father of three from Houston, Texas, shocked his country when he became the first American ever to be convicted of receiving military training at a terrorist camp in Somalia.

Daniel Maldonado, an offbeat, outspoken young man who sported tattoos and dreadlocks, committed himself to wage jihad outside the United States and went to Somalia to receive training. It was there that he mastered the violent “arts” of homicide bombing, building IEDs and engaging in hand-to-hand combat.
Maldonado’s training in jihad came from Shabaab al Mujahideen, a group the State Department on Feb. 29, 2008, designated as a highly dangerous foreign terrorist organization.

Shabaab al Mujahideen, which espouses radical Islamic rule and has close ties to Al Qaeda, is best known for operating training camps for people seeking a more extreme form of Jihad. It also has been forging relations with Somali pirates who have recently been intercepting and holding for ransom several international shipping vessels.

Al-Shabaab an Islamist group in Somalia officially said that they would track American citizens wherever they are, even if they are Aid workers or Journalists. Shabaab’s ultimate goal, as articulated in an April statement, is to throw the West “into hell.” Click here to read the full statement from Shabaab al Mujahideen.

Maldonado left his wife and three young children behind to pursue a life of jihad, beginning with his training at a Shabaab camp. Early in 2007, he fled the camp when it was invaded by the Ethiopian military. He was later arrested by Kenyan authorities and transferred to U.S. custody. After a lengthy interrogation by the FBI and a subsequent trial in Houston, he was convicted of receiving training from a terrorist organization. He was sentenced in July, 2007, to 10 years in federal prison. Click here to read the criminal complaint against Maldonado.

After the trial, FBI Director Robert Mueller praised the cooperation among international authorities that led to Maldonado’s conviction. But the disturbing implications of his case lingered. During his interrogation, Maldonado said Shabaab is not only intent upon creating an army of extremists for a crusade against the West, but it also seeks to establish an extremist Islamic network of unrivaled strength.

As the armed wing of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU), Shabaab was initially packaged and promoted to the people of Somalia as a “law and order” organization. Indeed, the collapse of the Somali government in the 1990s — when clan warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre — resulted in years of violence and instability.

But what began with a promise to bring order to a broken, war-torn African nation rapidly developed into a new — and increasingly deadly — frontier in the war on terror.

According to Dr. J. Peter Pham, professor of justice studies and political science at James Madison University in Virginia, Somalia’s conflict with Ethiopia destroyed much of Shabaab’s original leadership. What has replaced it is a group of cavalier fundamentalists with a desire to create a “Taliban-like” government in the country, similar to what existed in Afghanistan before the September 11 attacks.

Just as disturbing is Shabaab’s association with the Somali pirates. While Shabaab’s original leaders discouraged a connection to the pirates, the new generation appears to be developing a burgeoning relationship with the outlaws. “Right now, the relationship between Shabaab and the pirates is one built out of convenience,” Pham said. “In return for allowing pirates to operate out of ports south of the city of Mogadishu, which are all controlled by Shabaab, it is receiving from the ransom the pirates demand for hijacked ships.”

Now analysts are concerned that Shabaab will develop a more significant relationship with the pirates, one that could result in an organization with the power to terrorize a struggling global economy.“There is a real danger that they might see an opportunity for real economic impact,” Pham said, In a worst-case scenario, he said, “Shabaab might say, ‘Individual [homicide] bombers are effective, why not [homicide] tankers?’”

As it is now, the ransom money the pirates share helps fund Shabaab’s jihadi cause, most likely in the form of weapons for its terror camps. Its efforts in that regard have not gone unnoticed — Shabaab has garnered the praise of Usama bin Laden on multiple occasions.

Shabaab camps have “developed into a cheaper and more readily available alternative for jihadi recruits living in the West and seeking an appropriate venue to obtain expert instruction in the arts of terrorism.”

At night, according to Maldonado, members of Shabaab gather together to share tales of bin Laden and his exploits. “Shabaab has proudly draped itself in the flag of Al Qaeda and the philosophy of global jihad against the U.S.” The terrorists welcome their placement with “other honorable men” on the State Department’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

October 17, 2008 Clip No. 1922
British Islamist Kamal Al-Hilbawi and Liberal Nabil Yassin Debate Whether Israeli Children Constitute Legitimate Military Targets
http://www.memritv.org/clip_transcript/en/1922.htm

Following are excerpts from a TV debate featuring Dr. Kamal al-Hilbawi, director of the London Center for the Study of Terrorism, and political analyst Dr. Nabil Yassin, which aired on BBC Arabic TV on October 17, 2008:

Dr. Kamal Al-Hilbawi: I condemn the targeting of any civilian, but incidentally, I believe that every Israeli civilian is a future soldier.

Interviewer: He is what?

Dr. Kamal Al-Hilbawi: A future soldier.

Interviewer: Even if he is two years old?

Dr. Kamal Al-Hilbawi: Even if he is a child. A child born in Israel is raised on the belief that [the Arabs] are like contemptible sheep, and that this is a land without a people, and they are a people without a land. They have very strange concepts. In elementary school, they pose the following math problem: “In your village, there are 100 Arabs. If you killed 40, how many Arabs would be left for you to kill?” This is taught in the Israeli curriculum. What would you say about that? Should a child studying this be considered a civilian? He is a future soldier.

[...]

Dr. Nabil Yassin: What Kamal said is very dangerous. He is familiar with the case of the Kharijites. He takes us back to the Azariqa, the Kharijites who were most lethal to Muslims. They used to cut open the bellies of pregnant women, because they believed that the child would become an enemy of the Kharijites.

[...]

If we, as Arabs and Muslims, condemned every operation targeting civilians anywhere, we would be able to demand that all parties – not only the U.S. – commit themselves to the same position. I condemn the Israeli governments for teaching children such things, but I do not condemn the child, who still doesn’t know how he will kill the Arabs in 20 years’ time, when he becomes a soldier. We should differentiate... These things lead us back to the root of the problem: Who is a civilian, and who is a soldier, who is being targeted, and who is targeting me? We must not include civilians in the list of military targets.

[...]

Dr. Kamal Al-Hilbawi: We must first ask ourselves, with regard to the Polish or Russian Israeli, who came with his children to occupy a land and a home that are not his, expelling the Palestinians to America, Britain, France, and Lebanon – what is his status according to international law?

Interviewer: We don’t want to limit the show to the Palestinian cause and the Arab-Israeli struggle, we are talking about terrorism in general.

Dr. Kamal Al-Hilbawi: Allow me. I absolutely do not condone the killing of civilians. But those responsible for the killing of these civilians are sometimes their own relatives and their own country.

[...]

In my view, Sheik Al-Qaradhawi is one of the people responsible for the development of religious violence, I’m sad to say.

Interviewer: Dr. Nabil, we don’t want to...

Dr. Nabil Yassin: Let’s be clear on that... Religious scholars issued fatwas...

Interviewer: We are not here to pass judgment on Sheik Al-Qaradhawi or anyone else.

Dr. Nabil Yassin: We need to be realistic. For 1,400 years, we’ve been speaking in the name of Islam, while concealing the facts of reality. There is a movement among the clerics – and I don’t believe in clerics, because there is not supposed to be any clergy in Islam... There is a group of clerics, or religious jurisprudents, who fuel the phenomenon of religious violence, provide religious justifications [for terrorism], and allow people to go to Paradise and marry the black-eyed virgins, by killing themselves and others, some of whom are Muslims.

Bring the Tropics to your Garden- Grow Cassabanana!

Posted: 25 Nov 2008 06:24 PM CST

Every so often, even I, your ever-talented host, fail.

One of those occasions happened this year with a plant I was really excited about and intended to write a comprehensive article on growing it. This plant was Cassabanana, Sicana odorifera.

It’s not a banana at all, but it’s still quite tropical and nearly unheard of in the United States. It’san herbaceous perennial vine, but can be grown as an annual….where? I’m not sure. The information on the plant is so sketchy, it’s very hard to find any kind of information on it. All I know is several copy-and-paste garden websites listed it as a perennial in the tropics and an annual in “most climates.” Whatever that’s supposed to mean.

The fruit is long and cylindrical. Think overgrown cucumber, with a very tough skin and what is said to be a lovely aromatic smell. In fact, many people use the long-lasting fruit to freshen the smell of a room.

The fruit is either cooked prematurely like squash (which I wasn’t interested in since I was drowning in squash of all kinds this year), or allowed to ripen and used fresh, in drinks, pies, or preserves. It’s said to have a sweet tropical flavor. Again, whatever that’s supposed to mean

Growing Cassabanana

My own experimentations lead me to believe you stand an okay chance trying to grow this sucker down to USDA Zone 6. It thrives in hot summer weather, and for me, didn’t do much till summer arrived. Afterwards it needs a lengthy ripening time before frost. Because of this, I would nominate this plant for starting indoors early.

The vine may be too long and cumbersome for very small gardens. It needs a lot of sprawl space or a tall trellis. It’s said to grow up to fifty feet, but mine sure didn’t. My trellis was short, but I let it grow up and down on it, resulting in a jumbled mess that at least kept the fruit off the ground.

Seed is not too difficult to come by, several tropical-oriented companies offer seed for sale. My seed germinated very poorly- about 20%. It could have just been old seed, since most members of the gourd family germinate in no time flat. 20% equaled two seedlings, which for the amount of space the plant takes up, was no less than I needed. I was still a little bummed. I paid for ten seed, I wanted ten plants.

Nothing but trouble thereafter. While transplanting the very slow growing seedlings, I half cracked the stem of one plant. Ouch. This one actually survived but was set back for some time.

It grew slowly to start, until the heat kicked in. Then it took off. It didn’t produce very many female flowers, but all of them set fruit.

The fruit grew splendidly into a rather large cylindrical shape. It began changing color from green to yellow. Then from yellow to purple-ish. What followed was a week of solid rain, and the fruit all split open. Bugs quickly found their way inside and ruined whatever might have been edible.

Fruit was still setting, so I hadn’t lost all hope, but then came an infestation of squash bugs, that killed many of the flowers before I vacummed them all up (more on vacumming pests in a future post). Afterwards, fruit was still setting, but the ripening period for this fruit is so long that none of them made it till frost. I was so disgusted I didn’t even bother harvesting the immature fruit for cooking. I wanted ripe cassabanana, and I won’t be completely happy till I get it.

Bottom line? It didn’t work out so well for me, but that’s no reason for you not to give it a try. Up to USDA Aone 6, at least. I’ll be giving these guys another go-round next year. Let’s hope for better things!

Granny notes: One year I grew a Luffa plant in the living room, it was a beautiful plant that flowered every morning at 4 am, you could set your clock with the flowers.

Half my living room ceiling was a green plant, LOL, I have never taken down the macrame rope that I ran all over the ceiling, from hook to hook, as I still plan to do it again, or a gourd, a feather or paint brush will fertilizer the flowers.
