A 3-year-old boy died Wednesday after being attacked by a dog at Camp Lejeune, Onslow Memorial Hospital spokesman Tim Strickland confirmed.
The dog, a pit bull, attacked the child at Tarawa Terrace I, base spokesman 1st Lt. Craig Thomas said. The dog was captured and is being held at the Camp Lejeune kennel, Thomas said.

Dear God, have mercy on this poor child and family.
my thoughts and prayers are with the family
This is a bad idea.
A military base is is one of the few places where this kind of stuff can be prevented simply by prohibiting pit bulls and a few other "unpredictable" breeds.
I hope the commander has the cojones to change this policy.
Some dogs have no place in a community. If you want to have one go live by yourself in the back woods.
And the damn dog was not chained and behind a six foot fence. WHY?????
That poor family.
Throw the @$%&* dog out of an airplane at 20,000ft.
And how many children does an animal have to kill before it is deemed vicious?
Wonder when the Pit Bull apologist will show up to tell us it’s not the dogs fault.
I want to know why! Doesn't anyone own a firearm on the base?
My neighbor has a pit bull that jumped the fence and attacked my Basset Hound. I heard my dog howling and went out to find that the pit bull had my dog by the throat. After chasing to dog off with a shovel I demanded that my neighbors chain it to a tree if they couldnt control it.
My dog is now scared to go outside, and the neighbors dog having learned that he could scale the fence and that my dog is terrified of it now goes ballistic everytime it is outside at the same time as my dog. The neighbors apparently will not chain their dog, but at least the husband will jump on the dog’s back and wrap his arms around the dog to hold it back if my dog happens to be doing his business at the same time as they let the pit bull out.
I don’t want to call the authorities on my neighbors but my patience has long since worn thin. The dog is a public menace and needs to be controlled. I am worried to let my 10 year old son go in the backyard because of it.
I’m curious to know what other breeds you would consider ‘unpredictable’.
Walk your dog in the yard with a rifle, if the pitbull goes over the fence.....
By the way did you report the first attack to the police? Most jurisdictions only allow 1 or 2 “bites” before the dog is put down.
No offense but what are you waiting on? How are you going to feel when that damn dog attacks your kid? I would protect my family and to hell with the neighbor.
Sorry to be so blunt, but you're a fool if you haven't called the authorities about this (or taken the matter into your own hands with that shovel late at night). Your neighbors dog has already demonstrated that it can jump your fence and attack in your yard and yet you're letting your young child and your own pet out in your yard and hoping nothing happens? You don't want to risk offending your neighbors by calling animal control but you're willing to risk you son's life instead? Lord protect your dear child from your neighbors dog and from his negligent parents.
Well, just off the top of my head, I would put Akitas, Chows and Pressa Canarios in that category.
There is no real reason at all to have a breed capable of killing children and frail adults in a densely populated area. If you are in a place where there is a reasonable expectation you can control who comes in contact with the dog, that is a different story. And, are isolated enough so that an accidental escape is very unlikely to result in tragedy. But, if you live in a city or in tightly spaced housing, you have to give up some rights.
For instance, I live on 40 acres next to square miles of BLM land. I can & do shoot my pistol off my balcony nearly every day. When I live in the city I give up that right.
Same with owning dangerous animals.
Although I understand that you don’t want a conflict with your neighbors, you should see about getting their dog on the vicious animals list, if your city keeps one.
Irresponsible owners like that shouldn’t have anything more dangerous than a chihuahua, imo, and they are making things worse for the people that actually care for and control their pit bulls.
If they are the type that you can have a conversation with, you could suggest they join a bully breeds group or a weight pull class so they can learn why their dog’s so mean and hopefully correct it.
“Throw the @$%&* dog out of an airplane at 20,000ft.”
I think the owner should share that fate. This dog is a dog bred to fight. It knows nothing else.
IBTPBD
The dog just killed someone.
How the heck did they capture it ?
I can’t figure out why someone just did not shoot the dog, either.
Sorry if I was rude, but if my post and others here have prompted you to take action and call the police, I’m pleased. I hope you get a response that keeps you and your son safe. Good luck.
They should put them both down at the same time.
This owner failed his dog miserably. Although pit bulls are bred to fight, the fact that he attacked a child indicates that his owner didn’t care for him properly. Pit bulls need constant attention and interaction as much as they need excercise. This guy (or gal) obviously didn’t bother with either.
Ping.
“Wonder when the Pit Bull apologist will show up to tell us its not the dogs fault.”
Right now! Pit Bulls are not mean unless some human makes them mean...ie Mike Vicks! Pit Bulls are trained in a pit by humans not each other.
Remember Pete from the Little Rascals? He was a Pit Bull. They are loving dogs IF people like Mike Vicks don’t train them in the pit.
I want to find the person who did this to the dog and lock him/her in the kennel with all the other bitches!
The dog needs to be D-CON-taminated.....;^)
People keep getting mauled and killed by these damn dogs and this is the same crap we hear. There is something different about these dogs than other breeds. There are stories of these dogs turning on their owners. Dade county Florida along with other counties and cities have outlawed them. There is no good reason to own these dogs.
Why don’t your husband kill the dog then?
You can train that pit bull to be a coward.
Wait until the neighbors leave the dog in the back yard and aren’t home. Pummel the dog with a couple of water balloons filled with vinegar, and lots of ice cubes, preferably from a hidden position the dog can’t see. Repeat this at random intervals.
Pretty soon the dog will be afraid of it’s own shadow, and will scratch at their door trying to get in the house. It will also lose it’s aggression.
I have two Akita lab mixes, brothers. It’s funny, one weighs about 50 more lbs than the other and is pure Akita with attitude. The other loves to retrieve and cuddle and is pure lab. I’ve broken up a few fights, it’s always the lab that starts it. The akita responds more strongly to discipline.
IMHO, the world is full of aggressive breeds and aggressive dogs. You can’t forbid them all, they were bred to do a job. The problem is people thinking they are “cute” or “cool” and getting dogs when only people who are truly committed should have any of the aggressive breeds.
Dogs have no conscience. They do what they do. It’s a sad mix in an irresponsible culture.
Akitas are the cutest puppies going. But they are not toys. They are tough dogs for responsible people.
Dreadful. RIP.
When our daughtwer was little she was attacked by a doberman. The owners kept the dog chained to a tree no doghouse and no fence. The dog whined and barked non stop. When the man left for work his wife would turn the dog loose. It took the dog’s wife and a passer by to pull the dog off my child. Thank God our little girl was wearing a heavy coat! When my husband paid them a visit, they suggested if we didn’t like their dog we could move.
My father seriously suggested poison steak at midnight. It never came to that because a drug deal they were in went bad and the other people killed the dog in retaliation. Poor dog beaten to death with chains and pipes. I felt sorry for the animal, short sad life with stupid owners.
daughter I can spell
And I was tryong to get the dog off too. So it took 3 people.
People keep getting mauled and killed by these damn dogs and this is the same crap we hear.
THATS BECAUSE ITS THE TRUTH. WHEN I WAS A CHILD MY COUSIN WAS MAULED BY A LAB. I HAD ANOTHER GET ATTACKED BY A CHIUAUA. LOOK IT COMES DOWN TO ONE THING. THE DOG SHOULD DIE BUT ITS AN ANIMAL TAUGHT BY A HUMAN TO BEHAVE THIS WAY. THE KEY WORD HERE IS ANIMAL. ALL ANIMALS ARE UNPREDICTABLE. IVE OWNED A PITBULL FOR 7 YRS NOW AND THE ONLY THING HE AS EVER DONE IS LICK MY 4 GIRLS TO DEATH AND KNOCK THEM OVER PLAYING. HE LIVES IN SIDE, IS ALWAYS BEING HUGGED, PETTED, GROOMED, HE IS PART OF THE FAMILY. NOT SOME DOG THAT GETS STUCK ON A CHAIN TWICE THE NORMAL AMOUNT OF HIM, SO THE OWNER CAN TAKE HIM OFF ONCE AND AWHILE TO SHOW HIM OFF. OH LOOK AT MY PITBULL SO MUSCULAR. ITS ALL YOU EVER HEAR BECAUSE THATS ALL THE MEDIA DISHES OUT. NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT A COCKERSPANIEL ATTACKING A CHILD. OH BUT A PITBULL (ITS BREED TO FIGHT) ITS SO DANGEROUS YEAH OK BE SIMPLE MINDED. TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH THERE HAVENT BEEN BREED TO FIGHT FOR QUITE SOME TIME. UNLESS YOU BUY YOURS WITHOUT PAPERS FROM THE BACKWOODS. MOST TOP QUALITY PAPERED PITBULLS ARE TAKING TROPHIES IN WIEGHT PULL AND SHOW COMPITIONS. DO SOME HOME WORK. HAVE WE EVEN SEEN PICKS OF THIS DOG. WE KNOW FOR A FACT IT IS A PITBULL? OR IS IT A MUTT THAT LOOKS LIKE ONE. SEEN IT BEFORE THAT ALL?
HEY DAVE ANY DOG CAN KILL A KID ITS AN ANIMAL WITH CARNIVEROUS NEEDS. K9’S TAKE A LAB AND PITBULL TREAT THEM THE SAME YOU WILL GET SAME RESULT. CHAIN THEM UP DONT PAY ATTENTION TO THEM AND BEAT THEM ON OCCASION, THE END RESULT TWO PISSED OFF DOGS. THINK ABOUT IT
a little cheese-flavored anti-freeze will fix your problem, if you get my drift...
Pit bulls are nothing like labs. It’s people who believe this who are the problem. You can chain a lab in the backyard with nothing but food and water for years, and it probably will be loving and sweet it’s entire life.
Do the same with a pitbull, and it will turn sour & vicious. They are very different dogs with different needs.
I understand you want to defend the breed, but pit bull owners need to be honest; these are not dogs for people who only want a companion.
I’ve heard it all before:
Scott Pace Warren was inside his house Friday evening with his 13-year-old sibling when the dog attacked, Dallas police spokesman Sgt. Gil Cerda said. Family members told police the 1-year-old dog did not have a history of aggressive behavior.
“When the mother came inside the house, she saw the dog attacking the 6-year-old and tried to restrain the dog,” Cerda said. “By that time, a lot of damage had been done.”
Warren was taken to a hospital, where he died, Cerda said.
The fatal mauling occured one day before a new state law in which dog owners whose pets attack and seriously injure someone could face up to 10 years in prison took effect. In a fatal attack, the sentence could increase to up to 20 years.
Cerda said it’s too early to say whether anyone will face criminal charges.
Animal control officers removed the dog from the home. Its fate has not been decided, Cerda said.
“In many of these cases, the dog is normally euthanized,” Cerda said.

You are in denial: The deadliest dogs Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, has conducted an unusually detailed study of dog bites from 1982 to the present. (Clifton, Dog attack deaths and maimings, U.S. & Canada, September 1982 to November 13, 2006; click here to read it.) The Clifton study show the number of serious canine-inflicted injuries by breed. The author's observations about the breeds and generally how to deal with the dangerous dog problem are enlightening. According to the Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study, 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings. In more than two-thirds of the cases included in the study, the life-threatening or fatal attack was apparently the first known dangerous behavior by the animal in question. Clifton states: If almost any other dog has a bad moment, someone may get bitten, but will not be maimed for life or killed, and the actuarial risk is accordingly reasonable. If a pit bull terrier or a Rottweiler has a bad moment, often someone is maimed or killed--and that has now created off-the-chart actuarial risk, for which the dogs as well as their victims are paying the price. Clifton's opinions are as interesting as his statistics. For example, he says, "Pit bulls and Rottweilers are accordingly dogs who not only must be handled with special precautions, but also must be regulated with special requirements appropriate to the risk they may pose to the public and other animals, if they are to be kept at all."

Pit bull terriers attack, critically injure 3 year old in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH — A 3-year-old girl was in critical condition at Cook Children’s Medical Center after being attacked by two pit bull terriers Wednesday night.
Police responded to the call shortly before 8 p.m. at a mobile home park in the 5000 block of N. DeSoto Court, Lt. Jimmy McCarthy said. The child’s aunt, who was also injured, was taken to Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital, McCarthy said. Police declined to identify the woman.
The girl does not live where the attack took place, but was in the care of her aunt at the time, said Lynn Alexander, a neighbor at the Redwood Estates Mobile Home Park in southeast Fort Worth.
This is just plain not true.
Guns don't eat, don't bark, and don't have to go potty.
If you have enough land to keep your vicious dog out of sight and out of contact with the general population, you aren't part of the problem.
It is very easy to effectively ban breeds which are allowed into situations where they can be seen by the public.
Almost throughout the entire country citizens are prohibited from owning dangerous animals like lions, tigers, etc. This works.
How many deaths from ALL DOGS TOTAL in that many years?

Statistics
There is a dog bite epidemic in the United States. There are almost 5 million victims annually — about 2% of the entire population. 800,000 need medical attention. 1,000 per day need treatment in hospital emergency rooms. The annual human death count in the USA is over 30. Most of the victims who receive medical attention are children, half of whom are bitten in the face. Dog bite losses exceed $1 billion per year, with over $300 million paid by insurance.
oh
my
eyes
Seriously the all caps is brutal.
Bears repeating. My friend was recently attacked by a golden retriever. DEFINITELY not a vicious breed. He got a couple stitches and weeks later is almost completely healed. Now if it had been a pit bull-type breed....
