On the Side: How big is your carbon footprint?
By Rick Nichols
Inquirer Food Columnist We are living, of course, in a carbon era, the evidence of which is not exactly subtle; witness the energy-rating tag on the Bosch dishwasher, the darkening image of "California organic," and, gusting across restaurant tables and grocery aisles, the spirited campaign, winning ground daily, against bottled water.
> The age's imperatives have supplanted, for the moment at least, the obsession with carbs (so 2005!), and for that matter, fats - except for trans fat - and even organic.
> "Possessing an excessive carbon footprint," as Michael Specter put it in last week's New Yorker, "is rapidly becoming the modern equivalent of wearing the scarlet letter."
> In this climate, the most-visible contributors of the greenhouse gases that trigger global warming are feeling heat: Ford has Diane Keaton shilling for its new hybrid. Sara Lee has gone solar in New Mexico.
> Most ambitiously, Britain's vast Tesco supermarkets chain is vowing to label groceries with their carbon count, a tally compiled from miles traveled, the fossil fuel used to process and package, and so on.
> In this last matter, the theory is that for shoppers for whom green is important, the choices will be clear - the carbon number as easy to compare as price or calories.
> Not that calories are so transparent outside the supermarket aisle: Chain restaurants are battling to keep them off menu boards. And if you're feeling ambivalent about that - if I may continue to digress - flip though a copy of Eat This Not That, the head-snapping new little picture book by David Zinczenko, editor of Men's Health.

I completely blow this crap off. Those that fall for this marketing scheme are idiots. These people pay more, get less, and feel smug about their purchase.
Gee..I don’t know if mine is big enough yet....maybe I should get a Hummer?
Blame people for global “cooling”. They’ll probably use Al’s globalwarmingcooling theory as a base and add some more customized “scientific evidence” to “prove” it. In other words, they’ll just do it again and again until they get their way.
Not as big as I'd like. I'm still working on it.
“How big is your carbon footprint?”
As big as I can afford to make it!
I can be smug, mine footprint is only 10.8. Nana-nana boo-boo!(blows rasberry)
Whoa whoa... wait a second here..
14. How often do you ride your motorbike with someone else, rather than alone?
Almost never
Occasionally (about 25%)
Often (about 50%)
Very often (about 75%)
Almost always
Am I going to actually get fewer green-points because now I don’t share a saddle ?! WHAT ?!
Also, I’m pretty sure that by clicking “United States” you will never get a good CF point spread. This test here is completely bunk.
How many miles do you suppose Al Gore racked up while pushing his indoctrination film pushing the credulous to buy his company’s carbon credits? I’m googling around for a rough estimate.
And I got 18. I guess because I have “running water” and “Electricity” I can’t get lower.
Since the human body is mostly carbon I guess Al’s ass and Hillary’s ass have a big jump on the footprint catagory.
I would love it if members of congress had to wear their personal carbon footprint numbers on their lapels.
This nonsense would stop and quickly.
Mine’s a size 10 Wide. And I intend to keep it big...
Mine’s a size 10 Wide. And I intend to keep it big...
You are, of course, assuming they HAVE minds?
Now THAT would be a really fun idea.
I’ve been wearing two pairs of socks in order to make my carbon footprint appear even bigger. Guess I’m going to have to buy some FIJI brand (and sourced) bottled water. I’ll be sure to dump it out on my lawn before I burn the plastic bottles.
It's a steal at around $45 dollars and up(check E-Bay...some folks sell it on there also)
I answered the questions exactly the same way, except one. The first time I said I was living in America. The second time I said I was living in Belgium.
Total Footprint (American): 37
Total Footprint (Belgian): 11
There you have it. Every other question, size of house, food, car, travel... everything, was exactly the same.
Try it yourself!
Yup. See my Post #39.
