There’s a bunch of moonbats in Vermont who want to secede now.

For my money though, KC BBQ, with the dry rub is the best eating in the world.

Ah but then you get into the internal question - vinegar based or tomato based sauce. It's said that barbecue sauce in Kansas City is like wine in France; go down the road a bit and it's a different taste experience altogether.

I wonder what are the racial demographics of those half-dozen restaurants which are receiving the changed flag. No doubt any correlation will be purely coincidental.

When South Carolina seceded, native son James Petigru said that South Carolina said that it was too small to be a country and too large to be an insane asylum. I think that the same can be said of Vermont.

I live in SC, and am not about to defend Maurice’s BBQ because, frankly, I think it $uck$.
But I do understand his changing from flying the Battle Flag to displaying the First National. Many of us who believe in our duty to remember our Southern heritage have been frustrated by the misuse of the Battle Flag by the Klan, Skinheads, Aryan Nation morons, etc. They have corrupted the public perception of what the BF stands for. So why not use one of the National Flags (I would have preferred the Last National, since it is still the flag of the Confederacy), since it won’t (or shouldn’t) carry the baggage that the BF now has to bear.
Most people will not even recognize the 1st National as a Confederate Flag. Most will believe it to be an early U.S. Flag.
The NAACP in SC is far more interested in whining and complaining about Confederate Flags being flown on private property and on a Confederate Monument on the Statehouse grounds than they are “advancing” the situation of African Americans. If they spent a fraction of the resources that they waste on flag issues actually trying to address the problems of teen pregnancy, High School dropout rates, an explosion in the number of fatherless homes, etc, etc, etc; they might actually make a difference in the situation of the folks they claim to represent.
Again, I’m not a fan of Maurice’s BBQ, but he does have a loyal following in the Midlands (where they don’t know a thing about good “Q”), and I cannot believe he would back down from anyone just to try to increase business.

I learned something by reading this article. I know all about the controversy, but I didn’t know the history of the Confederate flag. Another kind FReeper has posted a picture underneath your post and I am surprised to see it.
I never have before.

Thanks for the All-American history lesson, Maurice!

Unfortunately, your peers lied here. The group wasn't trying to overthrow the government, they were trying to secede from it.

Some people simply lack the smarts to be able to see the distinction.

According to the UN, this is a "human right" (except where the UN are afraid to go, of course)

Better luck next time

Thanks, but I haven't and am not trying to secede from the US government.

Still true the best flavored BBQ is often from black owned often roadside places. Family recipes passed down over the year, no corners cut, old fashioned smokers burning real wood. I would often ask local black customers where was the best place to eat when working in North Florida and South Georgia. Amazing the little hole in the wall places with BBQ to die for.

My opinion:

BBQ should be slow cooked with a dry rub only. NO sauce basting.

If you want sauce to dip your BBQ in, thats ok, but never cook the meat with sauce.

That's true, but most of the ones making a big fuss about it are too dishonest to acknowledge it and have an ulterior motive.

According to the UN, this is a "human right" (except where the UN are afraid to go, of course)

According to our Declaration of Independence it is as well. Of course, we actually meant it (at least we did in 1776).

I’ve been there a few times, not bad Q. Not in the same ball park with Lexington BBQ.

Had a chance to stop at Maurices last week. Mustard sauce was poor. Just too "runny". Sweet tea was hot. Fries were cold and he should be ashamed of that little bit of slaw!

I have eaten at hundreds of BBQ joints in my travels. Maurice's Q ranks in the bottom 25 at best.

” BBQ should be slow cooked with a dry rub only. “

You mean there is folks that DON’T cook it that way ?
What else would work ?

I've had some crappy Texas brisket before.

I see BBQ as art. Some are better at it than others.

I see people slather a good rack of ribs with a sweet sauce after they have boiled the crap out of the rack, cook it for 45 mins and call it BBQ. Bet you have, too.

Tex-Mex BBQ is ok, if you want to cover the taste of the meat with hot stuff.
