Why the barf alert? Like it or not, what’s portrayed in the article is true.

The barf alert is there because no matter how well the economy did in the past several years under President Bush, the MSM gave him no credit whatsoever. They're just trying to pile on with this sob story, but they have no credibility. Hence, barf!

I AM POOR, I AM POOR, I HAVE ONLY 3 TV SETS, A CAR FOR ME, MY WIFE AND 2 CARS FOR THE KIDS. THE GAS PRICE IS KILLING ME. OF COURSE WIFE AND ME ARE WORKING....WE HAVE A HARD TIME MAKING ENDS MEET!!! Well la de da....a lot of us had to scrape by. We made $280.00 a month, yes, it was awhile ago, but the prices were comparable to the wage and prices of today, a bit more than we were able to afford. We planted a garden, we didn’t have a tv, we didn’t have but one car, (an older model) we were military, we did have the commissary, but the prices were 6 months behind local prices, (local was cheaper, sometimes, do the poor of today know how many ways to fix hamburger and chicken, hot dogs?) we got by and were able to save for the future. So now we hear of these poor ones, who are just griping because the government isn’t giving them enough welfare. Well people, life is sometime full of llama pellets. Get off your duffs and do something for yourselves. Plant a garden, get rid of a couple of your tvs, cell phones, a car, a dvd player, you’d be surprised how well you can do for yourselves. That’s right, I do have a couple of tvs, (one in the kitchen, (so I can watch TX A&M & Cowboy football)no cell phones, I still have a garden and now that we are retired, we do quite well, but the way is planning and keeping to the plan. Mother government is like a prostitute, she will go to the highest bidder and you who depend on the government will come out on the short end every time.

They are trying to ridicule the story, but end up ridiculing the working poor.

Spot on.

I called the local Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse this afternoon to see if I could get a reservation for a table of four, they had nothing before 9:30 PM either tonight or tomorrow. Maybe these economic geniuses at AP could explain this phenomenon.

Don't forget, my local Best Buy has HDTVs flying off the shelf, cell phones are ubiquitous, $100 sneakers are not uncommon, cable and satellite TV, iPods, PlayStations, high school kids drink Starbuck's coffee, etc.

I'm not naive to think that there aren't those in need...I try to help them a much as I can. But the middle class is not hurting like this article says.

>> yall have no idea what it is like to be working poor in a rural semi rural area.

Well, I don’t have any /experience/ in being what I guess you would call “working poor in a rural area”.

I do have quite a bit of experience in rural living, and I have been what you would probably call “working poor” in my life.

Please help me understand what /you/ mean by “working poor in a semi rural area”. Does it mean living in a town? (7-11 is close but grocery is 20 miles away, I’d assume so.) What sort of job does a “working poor” person hold down and how much are they paid?

Arrogant Freepers making conservatives look bad? Naaaah.

I wonder how many of them also support Duncan Hunter, who does realize that the Middle Class in America is getting squeezed out by “free trade,” illegal labor and China (resisted saying “China-Mart”).

As someone whose paycheck has stayed the same since before $1.65-per-gallon gasoline, I know I’m not amused.

I’m a grow a veggie garden, so grow one. It’s not difficult, even for me, a non-gardener.

“What we really need is the Government to come in and make life easy!”

Thats the problem - the govt has printed so much funny money to make life easy for lots of interest groups... and guess what has come home to roost.

Yup, the corner rip off store is with in walking distance but a real store is a 30 minute drive. I do real shopping once a month and try real hard not to buy anything but morning coffee at the local rip off "conveience" store.

Working poor

House cleaners
Deck hands on fishing boats
Recyclers
Lawn care
Wait staff
back yard machanics
Handy man, small contractors
unskilled - semi skilled labor
out of work shut down workers
etc.
not one that I know has his/her hand out nor are they complaining, and yes times are hard.

I spent some time every week buying food and taking it to the local food bank.

Pretty much to a man, each of these folks I saw there had 100 pounds on me - easy.

And you are quite right. They were loading up on the donuts and the pies and the highest calorie, emptiest nutrition food they could get - stuff that I would eat only on a lark, so to speak.

Food is dirt cheap here whether you want to believe it or not. Even the poor spend very little as a % of budget on food compared to 95+% of the world. We simply have too many people living WAY above their means buying things they can’t afford.

Let's see:

Housing - Flat to cheaper
Clothing - Cheaper--by a lot where I am
Energy - Flat to down from last year (albeit up considerably since 99)
Health Costs - Some down (prescription drugs ala Walmart/Target/Elsewhere), some up (high end medical treatments)
Electronics/Computers - Down
Food - up 5-6% on average.
Wages - Up 4.2%

I'd believe overall inflation is probably 2-3%. If food makes up 40%+% of your budget (which would put you in the poor category), I'd say it's probably closer to 5% inflation for you.

I think there are a bunch of DUmmie plants invading this thread.

They’re so easy to pick out, it’s laughable.
