10:30 p.m.: Fire scene subsiding

At about 10:30 p.m., about 20 firefighters from two departments were still working to cool several hot spots from an afternoon fire that engulfed a section of Barton Solvents in Des Moines.

Safety issues have mostly subsided, Polk County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Mumm said, but “there’s always a chance a hot spot could flare up.”

Mumm said there is no word yet on what ignited the chemical solvent that was being pumped into a 300-gallon portable container at about 1:15 p.m. SNIP

Fremont Bomb Suspects Arraigned In San Jose

A man and woman were arraigned Monday in a San Jose court on possession of explosives charges after police made a discovery at their Fremont home Thursday that temporarily evacuated nearby homes and locked down a high school.

Steven Gilbuena, 45, and Yvonne Zuniga, 29, have been charged with possession of explosives on a public road and possession of explosives with intent to injure persons or property, according to Deputy District Attorney David Boyd.

The suspects were arrested in San Jose Thursday after officers discovered an explosive device in their car during a noon traffic stop on De La Cruz Boulevard at U.S. Highway 101.

A search of Gilbuena’s Fremont home Thursday and Friday also yielded explosives and shut down numerous streets and John F. Kennedy High School. Authorities safely detonated the explosives soon after they were discovered.

One of the explosives was “rigged to be activated by a cell phone,” Boyd said. snip

Police hunt man seeking mustard gas antidote (UK)

Counter-terrorism police are hunting a terror gang suspected of trying to manufacture mustard gas.

A nationwide alert has been sent out after a Libyan walked into an accident and emergency unit asking for an antidote for the gas.

The man said he needed the antidote for a “friend back home” who had been affected by the gas, but police do not believe his story.

The incident at a hospital in Manchester last week has sparked fears that a terror cell may have set up a chemical bomb factory. SNIP

Jihad on the Agenda at Middle East Institute Conference

By Matt Korade, CQ Staff

The Islamic world of the not-too-distant future is a place where the greatest threat of Muslim extremism comes not from Arab and Muslim-born jihadists but from Iraqi youths themselves. Where desperately poor Muslim teenagers in Europe dream of waging war against the United States in Iraq. Where once-fringe Islamist groups such as al Qaeda mine the rich recruitment grounds of Western cities.

And it is a place that will be discussed in detail during the Middle East Institute’s 61st annual conference, “the Middle East in 2010,” which will be held Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the National Press Club.

Newly hired Cleveland imam Alzaree resigns before starting job

PARMA, Ohio (AP) - The recently named spiritual leader of Ohio’s largest mosque has resigned amid allegations of anti-Semitism.

Ahmed Alzaree, an Egyptian-born cleric, quit yesterday before working a single day. He was to begin work on Thursday.

Mosque leaders had hoped Alzaree’s selection would close a period of turmoil at the Islamic Center of Cleveland.

But bloggers last month posted part of a 2003 sermon Alzaree gave at the Islamic Center of Omaha in which Alzaree quoted the Prophet Mohammed saying one sign of the approach of Judgment Day is that “the Muslims will kill the Jews.” SNIP

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Navy said a small, inert training bomb fell Tuesday from an F/A-18C Hornet fighter jet that was heading to Oceana Naval Air Station. No one was hurt.

The Navy said in a statement that the bomb hit a wall adjacent to a warehouse in the resort city of Virginia Beach. Minimal damage was reported.

Anna Nicole’s death coverage has Maria Shriver bidding TV news adieu

By ANI

Washington, Oct 26 (ANI): California’s first lady and TV journalist Maria Shriver has bid adieu to TV News because she is disgusted by the highly-publicised TV coverage of model Anna Nicole Smith’s death.

Shriver, a former contributing anchor and reporter to Dateline NBC, said that she realised that TV news business is no longer the same after she saw the media hype for the model’s death earlier this year.

“It was then that I knew that the TV news business had changed and so had I. I called NBC News and told them I’m not coming back,” E! Online quoted her, as saying.

In 2003, Shriver went on an unpaid leave of absence from the network in August 2003, a time when Schwarzenegger started his gubernatorial campaign.

However, she has still be associated with the network and has anchored dateline twice and has been a part of a panel discussion on breast cancer on CNN’s Larry King Live last March.

Last May, Shriver indicated said that she is contemplating joining the news division.

However, she decided against the idea after watching the build-up on media.

“I was just flabbergasted by that. How it was across the board, all-encompassing and I just thought to myself, this is not where I want to work. I actually quit and I said, you know what, this ship has sailed, it’s not for me,’ she said.

This is OT but I found quite interesting.

Kitchen Plastic: Easy Greening

By Melissa Breyer, Producer, Care2 Green LIving
Tupperware: The epitome of the 1950s. And although the apron-wearing, martini-bearing, housewife-in-heels with her rainbow of Tupperware may be an ideal of the past, the quest for a well-organized kitchen persists. To see tidy stacks of food-filled plastic containers in the fridge and freezer is comforting in a primal kind of way. But then comes the procession of warnings about storing and cooking food in plastic, and leaching chemicals, and hormone disruption, and ACK! So here it is: The lowdown on plastic food containers. Learn which plastics to never use with food, read 12 tips about plastic in the kitchen, and see some swell inert alternatives.

SIMPLE SOLUTION: So let’s just cut to the chase here: Flip over your favorite plastic food storage container and check the recycling code number. If you spy a number 3 or 7, well, those containers should probably go to the craft room or garage to store buttons or screws rather than food. If there is no number listed, contact the manufacturer. (And to be fair to Tupperware, they do manufacture products that are not made of these plastic types.)
Number 3 is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), also known as vinyl. PVC has garnered the moniker “the toxic plastic” for the presence of DEHA—one of several plasticizers (softeners) used in its production. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, long-term DEHA exposure has the potential to cause: Reduced body weight and bone mass; damage to liver and testes; and cancer. The manufacture and incineration of PVC also releases carcinogenic dioxins into the environment and food chain. Although PVC is not the most common plastic used for food storage containers, some are made from it and it is often used in plastic wrap to improve performance.

Recycling code number 7 includes several plastic types (it’s the catchall “other” category—see tips below) but it is predominantly polycarbonate. The problem with polycarbonate is that it harbors bisphenol A (BPA). Studies have shown that BPA damages the reproductive systems of lab animals by interfering with the effects of reproductive hormones and has other serious health effects. BPA’s capacity to cause these stems from its ability to mimic the human hormone estrogen—it has been linked to prostate and mammary gland cancers, early onset of puberty and reproductive-organ defects.

As might be expected, given the strength of the plastic industry, there is controversy. Although there have been more than 100 studies showing BPA to be a concern, the plastics industry says it is harmless. The FDA admits that “substances used to make plastics can leach into food,” but they maintain that the levels are safe. Safe?! Yes, leaching petroleum by-products and toxic chemicals in your food are safe—don’t worry! Now why doesn’t that sound right? If, like me, you find the FDA a rather lackadaisical regulator, why not follow these tips for safer plastic use? (There is also that little environmental issue with plastic to keep in mind.) And while some may want to skip the plastic-food relationship altogether, it is a hard habit to break. Many of these tips don’t exclude the use of plastic, but rather offer the safest options.

1. Know your plastics. Plastic items are marked with a resin identification coding system (the number surrounded by arrows), which stand for:
1—polyethyelene terephthalate (PETE)
2—high-density polyethylene (HDPE)
3—vinyl, polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
4—low-density polyethylene (LDPE)
5—polypropylene (PP)
6—polystyrene (PS)
7—other (includes polycarbonate, acrylic, polylactic acid, fiberglass)

2. When you need to use plastic, these are the safer choices to use with food: 1, 2, 4 and 5.

3. Learn to recognize, and then avoid, polycarbonate (number 7) for food usage. Polycarbonate plastics are hard and clear. Common items made from this BPA-containing plastic are food storage containers, baby bottles, water bottles, bowls and tableware. (And the lining inside food and drink cans, by the way.)

4. If you don’t get rid of all of your plastic, at least retire old plastic containers, especially those that are heavily worn or scratched. Older plastics tend to leach increasing amounts of toxins as they age. Use them to organize and store non-food items.

5. Be careful of serving and storing hot foods or foods made with fats or oils in plastic containers. These foods more readily facilitate the transfer of plastic toxins.

6. Never microwave foods in plastic containers. “Microwave safe” means the container won’t melt or warp, but doesn’t mean it won’t leach. Heating plastics increases the potential for leaching of chemicals into your food.

7. Never microwave food in yogurt tubs, take-out bowls, or other one-time use containers. These containers can warp or melt, possibly causing harmful chemicals to migrate into the food.

8. Avoid using plastic sandwich bags or plastic wrap products.

9. If you must use plastic wrap, make sure it is a brand free of both BPA and PVC. Ziploc, Glad and Saran are promoted as being free of BPA and PVC—but remember that these plastics live for 1,000 years…in our landfills.

10. Avoid deli-wrap and similar generic packaging since you can’t ascertain the plastic type used. When sliced cheese and meats are sold in plastic bags and/or plastic deli wrap, transfer them as soon as possible to unbleached wax paper or a safe container.

11. Remember that if you are pregnant or nursing, BPA chemicals are passed through your bloodstream directly to your baby.

12. Instead of mixing petroleum (i.e. plastic) with your food, use inert alternatives such as glass and ceramic rather than plastic food storage containers. Reusing jars is a win-win—and you can often find glass storage containers at flea markets and thrift shops. Or simply store food in bowls covered with a plate.

Try alternatives like these:

Pyrex Food Storage containers

Wrap-N-Mat machine-washable sandwich wrappers are a great replacement for plastic baggies.

'Miami group accused in Sears Tower plot was primed for holy war'
Oct 31, 2007

A group of men accused of plotting to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower were in the final stages of forming a homegrown terrorist cell dedicated to waging an Islamic holy war before they were arrested, a prosecution terrorism expert testified in a Miami courtroom Tuesday.

Raymond Tanter, a Georgetown University professor and terrorism scholar for 40 years, said suspected ringleader Narseal Batiste and the other six had nearly completed the "radicalization process" and moved toward acts of terrorism before their arrests in June 2006.

Hallmarks of this process include religious conversion, operation within a military-style hierarchy and adoption of goals shared by al-Qaida and other terrorist groups to destroy US landmarks, Tanter said. The final stage - which he called "jihadization" - means the group is ready to plan, recruit and prepare for an attack.

Evidence introduced at trial shows that Batiste "was talking only about violent jihad" and not other meanings of the Arabic word, such as self-examination, Tanter said.
