I saw large thermo shatter at a public school the other day.

In was a cheap model, fortunately, and seemed to be filled with a oily liquid, rather than mercury. Someone said that most of the old style thermometers don’t use mercury anymore.

Usually just alcohol with some red ‘dye’ in it....
Other liquids have been used, but alcohol is the most common.

You can still get mercury thermometers, but they aren’t as common as they used to be.
