Real American Idols (Fred Thompson looks at pop culture)
National Review Online ^ | 04/05/07 | Fred D Thompson

Posted on 04/05/2007 7:39:55 AM PDT by SE Mom

If you tune into the news, you’re going to end up hearing or reading at least the headlines of stories you’d probably rather not know about. Somehow, I know that Paris Hilton may have violated her parole. I’m not sure how it happened, but I even know a little about Britney Spears’s hairdo, divorce, and trip to rehab. These bits of cultural trivia, I really wish I hadn’t digested.

Now, you may be asking your asking yourself if I’m not just bragging about the Lady Vols because I’m a Tennessean, and I might not even argue with you if you said so. In fact, I’ve found myself humming “Rocky Top” ever since the team took the NCAA cup, but both of these women, and the other Lady Vol team members as well, have shown the discipline, sacrifice, and desire that anyone can and should aspire too. For the sake of our daughters, they ought to get at least a fraction of the coverage our media gives embarrassing, dysfunctional celebrities.

That's wonderful.

As I read the 1st paragraph, I could actually 'hear' Fred Thompson talking. LOL!

My daughter is going to grow up hearing about women like Mia Hamm not about women like Britney Spears. Or her own aunt who played basketball at U of I or me who was all state in high school in softball and played 2 years in college.

Girls that play sports have much less anorexia and on the other end much less likely to have overweight issues.

My guess is that is exactly why he is holding onto the Paul Harvey radio spot for a while before he announces. Several times a day, before millions of American ears, an opportunity for an FDR-style, fireside chat on the issues of the day. If I'd right, he'll make the announcement and resign from the show some strategic amount of time before the primaries, for a fund-raising blast.

If I were a bettin' man, I'd be bettin' Fred's in.

Solid homespun wisdom from Mr. Fred the Stalking Horse. It is now day 25 of the unbelievable, irrepressible Fred Thompson grassroots bandwagon; and 20 days since I predicted that he would not run, that he is a stalking horse to keep other conservatives from getting traction, and that if he wasn't running, he would draw it out for a while.

Everything I have seen for the past 25 days convinces me more that Mr. Fred the Stalking Horse is just a social conservative wet dream. It makes a few true believers feel good, but accomplishes nothing beyond mucking up the Republican primary with mixed signals.

One of the unexpected byproducts of turning off network tv is that I don’t have flavor-of-the-month pop icons invading my sensibilities. I only vaguely know who these people are from standing in the checkout line at the grocery store, indeed if I could get my groceries delivered I wouldn’t know who any of these people are.

Years of sitcoms have come and gone, and with a few exceptions if their stars sat down next to me on an airliner I wouldn’t know who they were.

That actually is a bit liberating. These people have no hold on me. You actually can get these people out of your homes and out of your heads.

I do think, though, that we should be worried when our children are shown over and over again that people who are rich and famous, and are presented as “idols,” get even more rich and famous due to behaviors that would be rightly deemed tragedies in most families.

I haven’t watched television in more than ten years (no time...not necessarily a moral statement, although from what I’ve heard about prime time, lately, it might be after all!). I haven’t missed it for a second.

That happened long ago, given that Fred polled at 14 percent without entering the race, largely at the expense of Rudy's lead.

Now massadvj is just seeing how ridiculous he can get. He seems to be trying out for a spot in Guinness.

If I were a bettin' man, I'd be bettin' Fred's in.

I pray that you're right - we desperately need Fred, as Rudy McRomney is liberal, lame and without rock-solid principles. We don't need a slick Dem-lite for the election, we need a stark contrast, but with someone holding our banner who sounds like a regular guy, someone solid who you know means what he says. Such a person (and only Fred fits the bill among electable R's right now) would trounce Obama or The Evil One.

Evidently, Fred Thompson is someone who actually thinks that (gasp) a delusion of talent in various fields combined with peculiar drug-related activities does not a hero make. What a strange and novel idea. Consider this a “this guy gets my vote if he actually makes it past the RINOs” ping.

Probably because a high percentage of Americans are interested in garbage. Interesting that in the tech world of programming and data entry, one of the earliest phrases used was “garbage in - garbage out”. Fitting, eh?

Kerry didn’t quit his job. Hillary, McCain etc aren’t quitting theirs. Why would Fred have to quit his?

Is there a contitutional ban?

What if he just kept on even while he was running?

They would scream but so what? If they demand equal time they should have to give him equal time in the senate .

I believe (though I’m NOT an expert) there are equal time clauses here and there for political campaigning. Fred would have to quit Law & Order...but that contract is up within a few weeks. The Paul Harvey stint would definitely fall under equal time consideration- but- in the meantime..he can let us know his thinking on various topics :)

I think the world of this guy and have for years- he’s a man.. in a culture gone metrosexual mad.

He's right. I picked up a copy of the National Enquirer last week and found out Britney Spears found ANOTHER boyfriend - in rehab.

There's hope though. That bunch from '24' had 7 film trucks about a mile from my house to film a scene yesterday. They like filming around here. That nuclear bomb you saw went off at the ITT Gilfillan radar range in Santa Clarita, not Valencia.

He may or may not run. I hope he does, because I’d vote for him enthusiastically. I sincerely doubt that his decision hinges on anything close to “mucking up the race”. It’s a big decision, and takes a lot of thought.

Great point. I've no idea, but then again, I think 99 percent of all the election laws I know about are stupid. Because a seated politician is more equal than some member of the public running for the same office, I guess. Makes no sense.

Anybody know?

“Everything I have seen for the past 25 days convinces me more that Mr. Fred the Stalking Horse is just a social conservative wet dream. It makes a few true believers feel good, but accomplishes nothing beyond mucking up the Republican primary with mixed signals.”

I don’t consider myself a social conservative. I started-off as a libertarian, and figured parts of the platform were not sensible e.g immigration and defense. While I LEAN conservative on social issues, I defintely like Fred for apparent reasons.

He says things that leaders often avoid speaking about, which are probably more important than what they do talk about. He’s not a threat to the very survival of conservatism in politics. Losing a presidental election is not as bad as splitting the party...(it’s happened).

If I had Rudy’s reassurance on some issues, then I wouldn’t feel so at odd’s with him being president. But I wonder how his liberal side would show in office. If he pushes the boundaries, it’s liberal leaders for life.
