Great advice for smokers, SheLion. bttt

Well, several years ago, when Maine bumped up the cigarette taxes again, my friends in Free Republic clued me in to rolling my own.

Maine's cigarette taxes went up to $2 dollars a pack, $20 dollars a carton.  Now, Maine Governor wants to add another dollar and it was in the news that the FEDS are also bumping up the cigarette taxes another dollar.  So, in Maine, that will be $4 dollars a pack for taxes and $40 dollars on a carton.

This is way over the top.

Plus, every town and city has a Smoke Shop.  And smokers can also buy bags of loose tobacco and filtered tubes in drugstores, like Rite Aid and grocery stores as well.

The lawmakers have got to learn that smokers aren't going to take it anymore!

"I also find it curious that most smokers like to drive with their window down, with their cigarette near the open window, even when no one else is in the car. Why is this?"

I recently quit, but I did this while I was smoking. Too much smoke did bother me, and I was a pack and a half a day smoker. It's the difference between a little garlic in your food and rolling around naked in it.

Can you imagine the money I have saved over the past 4 years since I now roll my own?

I quit smoking when the Navy Exchange raised the price of cigarettes to 29 cents a pack. Can you imagine how much I've saved?

If you were a smoker and too much smoke bothered you, imagine those who don't smoke at all... I can tolerate smoke, but it isn't a pleasurable thing. Still, I do NOT support laws on this subject, including confiscatory taxation. People should make their own decisions. However, they should also understand that there is a shift away from smoking by most in society. 40 years ago, it seems most people DID smoke, and those who didn't like it had to put up with it. Today it is just the opposite. In another generation, or perhaps less, the numbers might reverse again. I still say that it must be a REALLY pleasurable experience if people are willing to stand in the rain and cold to do it... To each his own, I say.

That's a lot of the problem in America - people only wake up and oppose the nanny state when they are personally, directly affected. Otherwise, nanny-state laws are A-okay in their book.

Thank you. I've been saying that for quite a while. I never understood when reading about the Holocaust how citizens could sit by idly while their Jewish neighbors are dragged off (alright look, I understand that social engineers kicking smokers out of a bar in order to coerce them to quit is not 1/1,000,000 as bad as putting someone on a boxcar to Auschwitz, but work with me here)...Now I understand it a lot better. In order to pull this off, you have to convince the populace that A)These offending people are responsible for all the ills of society and B)They are subhuman and are C)Deserving of their fate for the "greater good". The Nazis pulled it off in the 1930s. That's exactly what the billions of dollars liberals have spent to build hatred against a target group (smokers) has produced. Now, a few normal limited government, free market Freepers think it's ok to dump on their fellow citizens.

When they came for the drinkers during Prohibition, I did not speak out, as I was not a drinker.

When they came for the employees of the oldest profession in the world, I did not speak out, as I had no interest in purchasing sex.

When they came for the purveyors of what was deemed to be "obscene" or "offensive", I did not speak out, as I was not a fan of entertainers like Lenny Bruce or Howard Stern.

When they came to ban the female mammary gland from TV, I did not speak out, because Brian Boitano told me not to.

When they came for the marijuana smokers, I did not speak out, as I was not a marijuana smoker.

When they came for the steroid users, I did not speak out, as I was not a steroid user.

When they came for the pornographers, I did not speak out, as I was not a pornographer.

When they came for the people who don't wear seatbelts, I did not speak out, as I always wore my seatbelt.

When they came for the gun owners, I did not speak out, as I was not a gun owner.

When they came for the gamblers, I did not speak out, as I was not a gambler.

When they came for the cigarette smokers, I did not speak out, as I was not a smoker.

When they came for the overweight and the obese, I did not speak out, as I was not overweight or obese.

When they came for the drinkers (again), I did not speak out, as I was not a drinker.

Then they came for me...and there was nobody left to speak out.
