The global warming issue is confused in the minds of the older acolytes with atmospheric pollution. Those who have breathed the air of downtown Philadelphia, Denver, and LA decades ago, or maybe even now, remember smog. Well, smog is back and whatever cures global warming will cure smog, too. DDT, ozone hole, and acid rain are not far behind. They are throwing the old arguments into the pot along with the new thing--climate change--since climate change is getting somewhat iffy. They have these old scares to fall back on, and they are falling back on them.

The Clean Air Act has worked, at least it has here. The days like the 60's and 70's where you had trouble seeing the mountains from town are long gone. Of course, you'll never get the enviros to admit it.

The country is vastly cleaner. It was getting kind of dumpy, but especially considering the huge amount of development, it is amazingly clean and pure. It has been expensive and it has worked. Extending this to the whole world by clipping the US economy is remarkably nasty. Cutting off private development of outer space resources is even nastier and will fulfill the prophecy of the Club of Rome, and they are still out there and active.

By the current consensus, Galileo is wrong, and the earth is really flat and the earth is the center of the universe. Also the consensus is there are only 4 elements, fire, air, earth and water, bleeding is the most effective treatment for all ills.

I suppose the silver lining is if you look at what the Europeans and Canadians have done on global warming it is remarkably little, just enough to get some good press, but not enough to do serious damage to their economies. If you look at what they do and not what they say, they don't buy the bull much more than we do.

Even if the next Pres mouths a lot of words about international cooperation and fighting climate change and all, little will change. Nobody is meeting their quotas. Nobody will. Costs will rise as usual, but the megacorporations will survive that. Marginal companies will be out of business, which is what is happening anyway. Overall, little change.

The data from the ice cores is available on the Inet for anyone that cares to look/read it. The data covers the last 4 million years of the world's history. It is worth the time to learn the basics of global warming.

My understanding is the charter of the UN group puts investigating the historical climate patterns off limits - it's beyond their charter. The game is rigged to come up with the results they desire.

1. S. Fred Singer has quite a formidable pedigree for playing down links between tobacco smoke and lung cancer, between CFCs and ozone layer thinning, and between sun exposure and skin cancer. Why don't we make him Health minister? See http://www.desmogblog.com/node/1478; there are also good citations at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Singer

2. http://www.desmogblog.com/node/1478 also notes his close association with false statements and documents.

3. An example of a false statement above: "Just consider the scary predictions emanating from supposedly responsible world figures: the chief scientist of Britain’s Labour Party tells us that unless we insulate our houses and use more efficient light bulbs, the Antarctic will be the only habitable continent by 2100, with a few surviving breeding couples propagating the human race. Seriously!" As a Briton who has been following this avidly in the UK, I've never heard of the Labour Party (as it's actually spelt) having a chief scientist. UK GOVERNMENT chief scientist David King has made no such remark. But by saying "the Labor Party"'s chief scientist, Singer knows nobody can libel him.

4. Singer's remarks above about Antarctica cooling and in conclusion about world cooling "during much of the past century" do not give a balanced picture if you look at, for example:
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/2005/
http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/data/temperature/nhshgl.gif
http://www.fs.fed.us/ne/delaware/biotrends/trends85.JPG
http://www.worldclimatereport.com/wp-images/arctic_temps2.JPG

As you will see, much of Antarctica is warming.
