The idea mentioned by flashbunny and DJtex is also plausible for why Mars cooled down, without a fluctuation in solar temperature being a major factor.

Guess: it helps, but does it help a lot? Would the rate of Earth's spin in relation to its orbit around the Sun also keep the mantle molten?

Io is even more volcanic, and even tinier.

Great! If we can mine it, and transport it here, we'll never run out of water!

According to Richard Hoagland, Mars once was the captured satellite of another planet. That planet exploded, stripping away Mars' atmosphere, and creating the asteroid belt.

Kook. An interesting read, but a kook nonetheless.

It wasn't really water - but they were doing strip mining.

From what I'd been taught, the magnetosphere or the magnetic field, is generated by the spinning of our molten core.

That's what I too was taught.

I recently heard a theory that the reason for the wandering and reversals of the magnetic poles was due to our solar system's transitting the ecliptic plane of the galaxy.

Think about it: what's more likely to flip due to the transit: the small field in our solar system, or the massive magnetic field of the galaxy?

Funny thing: mass extinctions and global catastrophies also seem to coincide with the same ecliptic transit.

IF there are water reservoirs underground on Mars, then Mars just became the solar system's gas station (until we get to Europa... then it becomes the local Gas-n-Go). Plentiful hydrogen and oxygen, little gravitational pull (1/3 of earth)... anyone know if the atmosphere is as dense as Earth's (for re-entry burn-up problems for returning orbital tankers)?

If this rate has held steady over Mars's history, it would have removed just a few centimetres of water, and a thousandth of the original CO2

Why would they assume this?

Much more likely the rate of loss would probably be an exponential decay (example below):

Which would mean that they're looking at the tail end.

We are taught in physics class and can observe in the microwave oven and CAT scan machine that water has magnetic properties.

Thank you for pointing that out. All hypotheses need consideration if we are to be at all scientific about this.

I, too, was told that. I have been told a lot of things, often with extreme seriousness. Last night on Coast we were told by a mother that her son worked with space aliens at Area 51, and she was completely sincere and serious. Don't doubt a Mom!

A few critical observations that may have escaped your notice.

1.Fluids (gases and liquids) do not have a crystal structure capable of holding a magnetic moment.
2.Water vapor is a very small and highly variable fraction of the atmosphere where as the earth's magnetic field does not vary much day to day.
3. While water molecules do have a polar moment, it is not magnetic in the same way iron is.

The sun has a monstrous mag field. So does Jupiter. Do they have monstrous iron cores?

The creation account is actually an accounting of man's escape from a dying mars to earth. Mars is (was) the Garden of Eden. /silly

Um, no, I'm referring to the Garden of Eden. It may not make sense but I meant what I said. lol

It is fallacious to assume they must have the same mechanism to generate their magnetic fields. Their structures are fundamentally different from the Earth's.
