Ahmadinejad: Those who backed UN sanctions will soon regret it

A defiant Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday dismissed the United Nations Security Council resolution imposing sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program as "a piece of torn paper" that would not deter Iran from its nuclear activities.

"It is a piece of torn paper... by which they aim to scare Iranians... It is in the Westerners' interests to live with a nuclear Iran," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted him as saying.

In his first response since the 15-member Council voted unanimously Saturday to impose economic sanctions, the hard-line Iranian president said that the supporters of the resolution would soon regret their "superficial act," the Irna news agency reported.

"This resolution will not harm Iran and those who backed it will soon regret their superficial act," Ahmadinejad said.

Some interesting quotes from the article.

"Iranians are neither worried nor uncomfortable with the resolution... we will celebrate our atomic achievements in February."

"From Sunday morning, we will begin activities at Natanz -site of 3,000 centrifuge machines - and we will drive it with full speed. It will be our immediate response to the resolution,"

"Before going to war it is possible to achieve what we want without war, if the world will take the right steps," continued Peres.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said it sends "a clear message to the Iranian leadership that Iran's nuclear program is total unacceptable and the community of nations will act to prevent the Iranian regime from obtaining nuclear weapons."

"We don't think this resolution is enough in itself," Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said. "We want the international community to take further action. We're certainly not going to put all our eggs in the UN basket."

Enjoy the remaining days of 2006. It looks like 2007 will be an interesting year.

It appears that the vertically-challenged Ahmadinejad isn't a big fan of the U.N. I guess he and I have ONE thing in common.

Hey, not to worry, John Kerry wants to go over there and "dialogue"! Everything is ok now. We all know he was the nominee because of his foreign policy experience!

It's not in my interest to live with Iran. Nuclear or otherwise.

Indeed. And . . . interesting in the classical Chinese idiomatic sense.

Every day another threat. If someone got in my face every day threatening to kill me and my family and everyone I know it wouldn't take that long for me to react, what the hell are we doing?

This guy is begging to be killed, taunting us.

Sanctions rarely work for the purposes for which they were imposed and should only be used to modify non-violent threats.

If someone is threatening violence, the correct response is overwhelming force, not sanctions.

So the UN has imposed sanctions...will they seriously enforce them? I think not. Iran will have a nuke by the end of 2007 and only Israel or the US acting on their own will be able to stop it. The new Congress has already capitulated to the Arab world so I don't think the US is about ready to do anything except plead for UN protection.

How pathetic we have become, we have the power to wipe out any country on the face of this planet, and yet we refuse to use that power. We have a magnificent military capable of achieving any task assigned to them, but we use them so poorly. We put them amongst the enemy and force them to do a job other than what they are trained for, social work. Democrats and Republicans have made us the laughing stock of the world. A pox on both their houses, we Americans will have to protect ourselves our government does not have the will to oppose the PC that has left us impotent.

Wonder why France/Germany/Russia/China went along with the vote for sanctions? They usually veto everything.

Unless they realize that the sanctions are a useless gesture anyway and they can score points with us without really doing anything.

Do we in the west have the balls to take this clown out? I think you can count on my country, Canada, to assist.

I worked with a female Iranian many years ago. She told me Iranian men talk a lot but when it comes time to deliver the goods they fall short.

OUCH!

Time for Israel to strike against this nut.

Nope, Israel is smart enough to wait until they can do so with most of the world's OK (or at least mild acquensence) on it. That time is not yet here, but if this ass-clown carries forth on his threats, he will bring that time much closer.
