Time Inc. this afternoon gave walking papers to 27 staffers employed in the company's corporate consumer marketing unit. Time Inc. spokesperson Dawn Bridges confirmed the layoffs.
"There was a reorganization in consumer marketing," she said. "Positions and people were moved around."
In an internal memo that circulated the company, the thinking is that consumer marketing"will expand and formalize [its] role in audience development [Time Inc.'s] digital properties."
While more departures were anticipated by insiders it was not expected until early next year. The latest number of layoffs at Time Inc. brings the total to 577 staffers. Another 500 people are expected to leave the publishing giant when Time4 Media and Parenting are sold off.
Bridges said no more layoffs are expected in the remaining weeks of 2006.

Good news, of course there's just two weeks to go in the year.
Nice timing, but what the hell does a corporate consumer marketing unit do any way? Pimp the prestigious Time brand name or just shill the crappy CDs on cable?
They should axe the 27 idiots who it probably took to come up with the Person of the Year.
Ouch!
