Subtle gong alert, scrolled on the bottom of the screen.
I see two warring impulses in the President coming out in this press conference...impulses that have gone on consistently throughout his presidency, but are showing bigtime today. One of them is bad and one is good:
The bad impulse is his typical moderate Republican impulse to play nice with the Left.
The good one that he seems to always bear in mind that his first duty is to protect the country from external threats.
Yeah, but you don't torch your credibility in the interim.
It's one thing to lie to the press, it's another to rub their faces in it on national television. Stupid move.
Please don't do that, you are needed around here. Hopefully after a few days, we will all have a better perspective on things.
Losing the election didn't hurt me really, because I knew why we lost and it can be corrected if Reps understand why they lost. But hearing the President righ now, THAT is depressing. He's learned all the wrong lessons apparently.
It is unlike anything I've ever seen.
Come on Hank! They ALL lie. They just usually do it better. I can hear Bush's response on Leno all ready.
We all felt it. Just weird.
Hey, I really don't think Bush likes to outright lie. Spin and fluid-of-tongue is not who he is, if his assertion to being a devoted Christian is true. And I have no reason to think it isn't.
Bush's inability to honestly communicate has been a major problem of his administration. He swallows talking points and repeats the same words with differing tones. He thinks that's communication.
No I don't want to bash Bush today. It's tempting. He's right there, all big and bold like.
But this press conference, come on. It's bizarre.
He just said he apparently was working harder on the campaign than Rove was! (in context a question was asked about the reading contest b/w Rove and Prez?)
Yes, very painful to watch.
It's sad that Bush is making no attempt to improve the morale of his supporters.
He can be very blind.
Right now our Islamo Fascist enemies and our Democratic enemies are dancing for glee - planning on how they are going to furthur defeat the USA.
The Arab street dances today - and 87% of Jews vote Democratic!
WHAT??????
Nephew...and, yes, God is the only one I trust. Period.
absolutely.
this is a train wreck.
we have to figure out some way to survive for the next 2 years, and find a candidate that can win - any candidates, because 2008 is a transitional year, and the Clintons must be stopped at all costs.
Rumsfeld got out before the democrats took over the committees. If he's smart he'll move to Costa Rica and enjoy the tax benefits.
Bush just threw Rove under the bus too?
And, one more thing, I fear for the long term physical safety of W and Laura. Look at history and what the Left does to the people it deposes.
I have NEVER seen a President who is a LEADER, HONEST, and LOYAL be condemned so much by so many for so long!!
Great take on this. Thanks.
he just mispoke and said write off!!!!
This is WORSE for me
The sharks on this thread are starting to make me sick. What is the President supposed to do, hold his breath until he turns blue?
He has to play the hand he was dealt. Sheesh, folks.
I'm outta here.
People are freaking out. Get a grip.
The Commander in Chief is just fine. His message remains the same.
"It's sad that Bush is making no attempt to improve the morale of his supporters. "
Twisting the knife is more like it. That's how it seems to me. I feel completely gutted.
I'm kicking my own ass over this...this is terrible..Sat. Night live skit going on.
That's what gets me. A Muslim wins in Minnesota and 87% of Jews are voting for their demise. Knuckleheads.
What's he going to do, tell Al Qaeda and iraqi militants that our troops are not going to be supported? Of course he is saying that.
Also, it is smart to say that, because they have to. That's the beauty of this outcome. They have been complaining and moaning, but they are not going to do anything differently!
fairness doctrine.
Agree.
I see Bush is obviously upset, obviously not happy about how things have turned out, but yet he's also trying to reach across the isle and make the best of what he's going to have to deal with.
You KNOW the democrats aren't going to be reaching across the isle. And those who know Bush, those who claim to be long time supporters, should know Bush is one who turns the other cheek and keeps on trying to be the "nice guy". This does tend to make him look whimpy and indecisive sometimes, but people are ALWAYS underestimating him too.
I think Rumsfeld stepped down because they all knew he was just more of a target than a help in the administration. If Bush came out and called it like it is about the Democrats, there'd be hell to pay and he'd get even more crap for "dividing the country".
This is just my $.02, but I'm trying to look at the big picture here.
I can't believe he's focusing on the corruption.
This was an issue in a few places. The rest was because the GOP had no policy message. Iraq WAS an issue because it was not communicated correctly.
Just like Bush fails to communicate his policy.
Very true. Good post.
Gosh, I gave up t.v. today because I couldn't stand what they were saying. I sure hope I will be able to stay on here today. ~~sniff~~cry~~
The President certainly is giving plenty of fuel to the "hes still drinking booze" talking points.
In his present state of mind, the President should not be up there. He is rambling, dissembling and providing great ammunition for further attacks on his character and credibility.
are you listening to this press confernce? its bad.
now he's telling us that Hillary ran a great race.
no one on this thread is exaggerating.
Am I the only one who is sickened by the lighthearted jovial nature of this Q and A?
That's what the South Vietnamese hoped, as well.
Oh, so now all the gridlock is being laid at Bush's feet? For God's sake.
No gridlock??!!??? Sit down, Lady!
No, he does not respect us.
WE HAVE IDEALS. We support the Republicans for a reason.
He is reducing it to internal politics and a game.
This may be strange coming from me... because I am not a Bush fanatic... I but I feel sorry for him right now... this minute in front of the MSM Vultures....He is NERVOUS... you can tell.
He is HUMAN... WE LOST... AND THAT... CALLS FOR DIFFERENT MEASUREMENTS.
I am positive his pride is hurt as we will never know... but he is facint the reality that WE LOST!!!!
having said that, I am sure he will make so mad in a few days... he tries again to push the Immigration Amnesty :)
What was said?
Why? You want him snarling and alienating the press like Agnew?
Talking to myself again.
Hey Charles...Bush just said this election isn't about Iraq. That might blow your theory.
Okay...go with me...Bush speculating on the elections yesterday is not going well.
Senator Clinton trying to show she can help in elections? Governor Rendell? The man is saying nothing! He makes no sense!
I think he is very upset. I can understand this. Just odd for a President, especially THIS one, to be so different than we've know him.
Okay, getting more wits.
Why in God's name is it always about uniting whenever the friggin dems get in leadership but the entire time they are not in leadership they act like little kids who lost their toys in the sandbox!?????!!!!
Jon Stewart is pissing his pants about how much he has to work with.
I feel like what G. Gordon used to say about the Clintons:
"Ye SUCKERS!!!!!"
