I think it's too late for President Bush to explain about Iraq. I was totally shocked yesterday when my mother said we need to get out of Iraq. She said we should've done war the right way, not this politically correct crap. Bomb the crap out of them back in the beginning. Let our troops kick ass. She said she's sick of hearing about the terrorist's "rights".

My mother is a conservative R. Agree with you on the public relations incompetence.

****Why turn on the president because he is not perfect, when he is the only bright spot we have left? ***

I wont turn on him if he will start defending hiomself and stop being a punching bag for Democrats.

If he keeps on like he has been doing where is the bright spot?

You are correct. The majority of the American people are against ILLEGAL immigration. It's that the ones who want it, scream louder. That's the problem..

100 what-happened threads -- this is as good a place to put my $0.02 as any.

1. I think the historical pattern is now crystal clear. Any armed conflict we get ourselves into has to be wrapped up in 3-5 years or forget it. Along those lines, the American people have no tolerance for half-fighting whether it's in jungles or deserts. They support the President when he prosecutes a war vigorously, and desert him when he putters around.

Corrective action: President Bush should act aggressively to quash bombers and other 'wehrwulf'-type activity over there, something we've been doing with too much sensitivity and wussiness.

2. Congress of late has been entirely failing to enact any segment of the conservative agenda. Tax reform? Social Security reform? Border reform? No go on any of it. IMO the natural tendency of incumbant Congresscritters is to avoid taking decisive action out of fear of losing their position - they've just been reminded that failure to act is an action, too.

Corrective action: A fresh leader will have to wait until the next cycle and drive a new 'Contract with America'-style agenda. It'll have to be someone fresh because right now people have little confidence Republicans would actually enact changes!

3. Inter-GOP fighting divided the party with the effect (here and in the voting booth) Republicans were as angry with each other as they were at moonbat leftists.

Corrective action: none. This is a natural result of incumbency and of our failure to act on our agenda. People grew accustomed to the idea that we controlled Congress and felt comfortable going after fellow GOPers; the Congress felt confortable in their offices and didn't see a need to do what they were elected to do. The actions and nominees of the RAT party will remind us why allowing them to be in charge is a Bad Idea; and the shock to the GOP leadership will remind them that complacency and inaction do not win.

In this list are not: illicit voting, MSM lies, Soros, or moon phases. These things happen *every* election and they haven't stopped us until now. Neither do I blame Rove, Rumsfeld, or even Rice (although I wonder WHAT happens with otherwise solid people when they get assigned to work with the State Dept.). These guys just work for W, they don't set policy themselves.

Speaking of our soldiers, I hope their votes counted this election.

OMG he will prevail on them to work with him again. They might on illegal immigration but they will still be the same old bastards on any other measure. I hate begging assholes. I am not gonna watch this.

What exactly did Rumsfeld do that was wrong?
Or did the generals/admirals not stand up and ask for what they need to make things right? They need to be held accountable.

"think Andy Card was responsible for Bush not pushing back against the lies."

Card was an idiot, moderating sympathizer and needed to be removed, if he didn't resign. No loyalty. Useless as a wart on a warthog teat.

Oh yea, one last thing: trust the people. Talk of "sheeple" and such is RAT talk. They're the party that trusts a government elite to run everything because they think the people are too dumb to decide for themselves. Since we're the party of individual responsibility, we have to recognize that as free Americans people vote as they do for their own reasons, not always because they agree with us or drool with the DUers.

I really agree only with your #1. Of course to us Conservatives, #2 bothers us quite a deal, but lets face it, to the swing voters, it wasn't the main issue. #3, yeah, somewhat, but that didn't swing the swing voters.

Electoral politics is all about the swing voters, and they are simply sick of even HEARING about Iraq. They voted for a change, ergo, Republicans out of power.

I'll add another small one, the "culture of corruption" meme did take hold and was probably crucial in several elections.

I think its not a good idea to think up of all these other issues which probably didnt matter nearly as much. Its mostly about Iraq. Everything else was a side issue. Immigration, spending, the swingers dont really care as much as we do. Lets fix the Iraq thing, quickly. Then fight to keep what we did right, and there is plenty of that, including upcoming supreme court judges.

In a local referedum, the extremely conservative community of Downers Grove, IL voted decisively that we should withdraw our troops from Iraq. Obviously it doesn't amount to a hill of beans in terms of policy, but as a barometer, it spoke volumes as to the overriding issue in this election. Anyone who lives in DuPage County knows the significance of this. This is the same county that took Blagojevic back to the woodshed last night (something like a 200,000 vote differential in favor of Topinka).

Ironically - very ironically - this very dynamic may have cost Tammy Duckworth an expected victory in the 6th District. Roskam came through with a big victory despite Duckworth's constant harping on her wounded war vet status. It's possible voters were so altogether turned off by the war, anyone even associated with Iraq took it in the pants. Roskam's victory was the saving grace of last night. We have to build on that and get some legitimate GOP candidates on the ballot in IL in 2008 to challenge Melissa Bean and others.

Anyhow, I expect that the White House will be on the offensive from here on out. It's going to get extremely ugly in 2007 - a year of Congressional investigations and (I hope) a very bloody battle to replace John Paul Stephens (Janice Rogers Brown, if Bush has any balls left, otherwise probably Gonzales), and I expect we will see an attempted impeachment of Bush in early 2008. That in mind, the GOP will have to consider using its open Samson Option to turn back the Dem guns. If we lay down, the Dems are going to steamroll into the White House in 2008. If impeachment hearings actually materialize, we're doomed (and I mean DOOMED).

Part of this, a big part, is that 1) the Republicans allowed the media to frame the Iraq war as a failure with no counter... 2)because of their fear of the media, they are waging a PC war....the terrorists are not...and 3)many Americans vote based on a Katie Couric soundbite.

Are the Dems going to invade Darfur now? I mean, they have been whining endlessly that Bush wasn't doing anything. How can they do anything less?

Wow such cynasim...Ok I guess everyone forgot that the top political issue this year was the War in Iraq... Not immigration, Not Abortion, Not stem Cells, Not Judges, Not Economy, IRAQ..

1. In 04 the Democrats set a strategy in motion that would both undermine the President and to empower our enemies. (See Ted Kennedy coordination with the KGB during the Reagan years for more emphasis on the why)

2. In large part this strategy came to fruition yesterday. However, taking power in the Congress shares the burden of responsibility for the outcome of your positions. Nothing good can come of a Democrat controlled Congress.

3. When one party has all the power then all the good plus all the not so good that happens in this country belongs to them. All the Democrats did was amplify the negatives. America has voted that Iraq is a major negative.

So when the Mushroom cloud goes up over NYC or MIAMI or LA will Americans scratch their heads and wonder why or will the Republicans have to tell them they voted for their own demise.

What happened last night only makes me more ready for November 2008. I am hoping for another sweep back into the House by true Conservative leaders and hopefully, once and for all, getting rid of any further influence by the so-called "Bush Dynasty". Maybe electing a President such as Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani would be a great start since they seem to have true political backbones, unlike our current person occupying the Oval Office.
