Well, is Drudge ever going to put the story out? In a few hours the Times will have it published.

I will be a contrarian and suggest that just maybe, before the elections, the NYT is changing it's stripes and this will be a support piece for the Bush Admin

I dunno ... This paper pimped for Stalin.

If this was from the dem side, we would have heard it a few days earlier when they were freaking out about Kerry, perhaps? That it was completely quiet until now, maybe rove?

Yes, I know my thinking is more hoping, but who knows.

i'm afraid they are latching on to conspiracy theory about the forward operating base falcon destruction earlier this month. a fire destroyed the ammunition dump at falcon during which, there was a huge explosion (that many daily-kossaks are convinced was a tactical nuke) producing a mushroom cloud.

my suspicion? that the nyt is going to run speculation-as-fact (again) and try and nail bush for having a nuke in iraq.

Maybe this is why rove et al have been so weirdly optimistic.

How about "Bush caught giving nuclear bomb secrets to Iraqi terrorists in effort to legitimize lies he told while involving us in this illegal war"

Considering this is nyt thats got to be the ticket.

What a bunch of morons. Clearly they know nothing about nuclear weapons or explosives in general. A nuclear weapon will not produce nuclear yield because it is burned or blown up by an outside explosion. All that will do is set off the HE in the nuke incorrectly and throw plutonium all over the place.

Secondly, when enough conventional explosives go off, it will produce a mushroom cloud.

"try and nail bush for having a nuke in iraq. "

What? First of all, there would be nuclear fallout all over Iraq, the Middle East and stretching into Asia. Second, why in the world would we need a nuke positioned in Iraq?

I don't trust the New York Slimes for a single friggin' second. This is going to be a major league hit piece on Bush.

Saddam Hussein is SCHEDULED to be sentenced for his murder of the Kurds on Sunday--the Slimes is timing this piece, I think, to help obliterate that news...

i understand all that. there would also be questions about an 'emp' frying everything electronic within half a mile of fob falcon...

i'm not saying i ascribe to this theory. but, it makes sense that the nyt would be giddy about running such a story.

hey i could be wrong -- and i hope i am.

Probably something like: Undisclosed intelligence sources tell the NYT that Bush nuked 7 kindergarten schools in Iraq, killing millions of children.

Or someting equally as stupid, but the left will of course eat it up.

Whoa, wait, this is probable. What if the CLINTONS are behind this? A GOP win now would help Hillary in '08 - the current leading freaks (Pelosi, Dirty Harry, Dean, etc.) would be ousted by the freak sheep that make up the party. With all of the build up to this election the democrat sheep are expecting a big win, but if they don't take control they'll go manic on the current democrat leadership. Hmmm.

Guess if its negative to the GOP: That Iraq or sorces within the Iraqi govt RECENTLY starting looking into nuke tech, going behind the US's back or with "tacit approval"...leading to the NYT able to talk about how the invasion was worse for potential terrorist activities. It wouldn't take much of a drumming up of secret quotes etc to piece together that kind of story.

Positive-Some kind of ironclad proof that Saddam was dealing in Nuke tech. For this to be true I would posit it would have to be so ridiculously obvious that the NYT can't deny it, and values the "scoop" over the affect of the election.

All we need to know is that the First Gulf War proved that Saddam was much farther along in his technology for developing nuclear armaments than we knew; and that was confirmed again in 1995 when his main nuclear physicist defected to the West and reported what he knew. For all the details, see Kenneth Pollock's book, the Threatening Storm.

In the post-9/11 world, the US and the West could no longer glide along hoping that he was not developing a Nuke, not in a situation (between 1998 and 2002) when there were no UN inspectors in Iraq.
