Iran running out of options ~~ UN Sanctions coming?
Asia Times Online ^ | Aug 23, 2006 | Kaveh L Afrasiabi

Iran faces a dilemma. It can neither fully accept nor reject the package of incentives offered by Germany and the United Nations Security Council's permanent five (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China), irrespective of the growing international pressure, the UN's deadline of August 31 and the threat of international sanctions.

UN Sanctions translates into massive opportunity for corruption, embezzlement and lining one's own pocket for these countries.

Let me ask you this, has the UN always been impotent or just since Kofi Annan? If the latter, when is his term up? Granted, I appreciate that we may just get someone who is outright corrupt, as opposed to Kofi who is just innept and sort of corrupt.

My thoughts exactly. UN sanctions have always been such a deterrent in the past, haven't they?

I'll say this for Iran. They are alot smarter than the Western world - they know and recognize a fool organization when they see one.

We all know how relevant the UN is with its set of gums.

If ever there was a cause for Gum control, the UN is it.
When will we stop the cycle of Gum violets.
The UN has killed more people with Gum violets than anyone.

Oh no! not the dreaded, powerless UN Sanctions.

Then everyone crucified us for wanting them to be enforced.

NOw, when the UN refuses to back up their woreds, and the terrorists are emboldened, what is the plan that John Kerry would use? Where is the plan from the Hildebeast? What would John Dean do? Step up to the plate, tyou three bozos and tell us of the plans that would work, rather than waiting for a post-election revelation..do it for the good of tnhe country.

Who knows, if it works, maybe you'll be elected.

"Yeah Im sure those sanctions are gonna shake those koranimals to the core."

Let's see. We had the oil for food scandal between Saddam and the U.N. Do I smell another oil for food scandal brewing between the Mookster and Kofi?

I think the West, including the U.S., is making a mistake by assuming that we can diplomatically negotiate with a regime which is totally irrational.

The fanatic who heads Iran has an apocalyptic religious vision that welcomes total destruction of infidels and the coming of the 12th Imam. In order to have rational talks with such a 7th century jihadist mentality, we'd have to assume he doesn't really believe what he's saying. Are we willing to take that risk?

Relative to sanctions, they're as preposterous as the UN itself. Even IF they're enacted do we seriously believe that Russia, North Korea, and the other nations who made enormous profits arming them in the first place are going to cooperate? Give me a break!

Iran is certainly stalling for time. But what scares me is that it seems we are too. I think it's time the administration stopped kicking the can down the road and began to consider serious measures.

I've heard some pundits say we negotiated with the Soviet Union, why not Iran? Netanyahou had the perfect answer. He said that even though the Soviets had an irrational ideology they basically conducted foreigns rationallly --- that is, they were rational enough to NOT want mutually assured destruction! It's time we face the fact that fanatics who WELCOME "martyrdom" and death for Allah are not within the realm of rationality. Should we just offer more carrots and wait and see?

POINT OF NO RETURN IN THE IRAN NUCLEAR CRISIS...? [Mario Loyola] ..."In my piece in the current (August 28) print edition of National Review, I described precisely this eventuality as a point of no return, and argued that the United States should invoke preemption if this ever happened..."

It's a short excerpt from a subs article- he says IF Iran blocked inspectors, then we should bomb now, since we would be completely in the dark. We would have to bomb now, because the threat could be imminent before we knew it... THAT was Iran's answer, IMO - blocking inspectors. The formal reply was probably more of the same. This is a great point, and this is different from Saddam. 10-12 years is too long to fiddle with the UN. If we go that same route again, we are basically blessing Iran's nuke ambitions.

I would like to know something: when did we decide to allow the UN to dictate our national security? Why is this acceptable? All of this UN stupidity is maddening. They will not give up nukes. How many times will Iran have to say it before we believe it?

The two are not mutually exclusive. But consider what sort of religious fanaticism is being loudly and proudly proclaimed and consider also recent history -- then tell me it's not irrational.
