It's only against the rules to call FReepers liars.

Unless the people that are being called liars are FReepers that PH pinged. Then folks can say whatever they want, call people whatever names they want, and make any unfounded accusations that they want. Did you catch the stuff that "bray" was getting away with a few days ago? I've gotten suspensions for less.

Have you noticed how they take credit for every conservative victory?

And blame the Republican Party Conspiracy To Persecute Christians every time their candidate loses. I used to work for the Republican Party. You should have heard the phone calls when a fundie candidate lost a race (Ellen Craswell for Governor comes to mind). The antagonism, abuse, and outright threats from the religious right when they lost greatly exceeded those that we received from the Dems during Clinton's impeachment.

Do you know anything about the respective anti and pro science candidates' positions on issues other than the teaching of evolution? I have yet to see an article on the topic.

There were other issues. Sex education was a biggie, and also whether some administrator should have been hired. I don't know anyone's positions. Evolution got most of the press attention.

Right Wing Professor got banned? WHAT?

Yup, in the middle of June. Here are his last non-pulled posts

A FReeper named Agamennon flamed the Prof, and among other things accused him of plagiarism. He apparently had access to confidential info at RWP's university, and posted some of it. RWP sent a message to Jim Robinson telling him that he was liable unless he did something about the defamation, JR responded by saying any further threat of legal action from either one would earn them both a ban.

The thread was pulled, then both of them were banned.

[I'm pinging PH et al in case they can correct or extend my remarks]

That's how I remember it. A maniac attacked one of our best freepers, who tried to defend himself. Management took them both out with the equivalent of an air strike. RWP was collateral damage. Problem solved, I guess. But this website is poorer without RWP.

Ag. used the internet equivalent of a suicide vest

But this website is poorer without RWP.

That's the truth!

Ain't that the truth. I'm mad now. I don't know RWP personally, but he has been a friend to me here.

Let me see if I understand this correctly: He got into a flame war, and another FReeper essentially "outed" him. Even though that is a major "no-no" (which is supposed to result in an immediate banning of the person who did it), the person that did that to him didn't get banned. RWP threatened legal action if Management didn't fix it, and RWP got banned for it. Is that what happened?

Not exactly. RWP never hid his identity. His homepage had links. So it wasn't the "outing," it was posting some highly defamatory lies about his professional career.

I'd say slandered, libeled, defamed rather than "outed" him. There was never any secret about RWP's name or employer, they were on his FR homepage.

Even though that is a major "no-no" (which is supposed to result in an immediate banning of the person who did it), the person that did that to him didn't get banned

IIRC he had a less than one day timeout.

RWP threatened legal action if Management didn't fix it, and RWP got banned for it. Is that what happened?

Basically. Agamemnon was banned as well. Hence the term "suicide vesting"

Oh, man. Thanks for the explanation(s). That's just...

I guess that I'd better not say what I think it is. I was extremely busy this summer, and missed a lot of things, apparently. I liked RWP. That really sucks.

The problem is that although the incident managed to rid the website of Agamemnon (a truly abominable individual), the even-handed approach also got rid of RWP. And that kind of trade-off isn't going to do this place any good, because there are far more toxic nut-jobs than truly intelligent, educated people. If a one-for-one series of exchanges were made, we'd rather quickly run out of good guys, and the website would then be dominated lunatics.

RWP, The Uncle that I wish I'd had.

He mentioned once that his 5-year-old nephew built a trebuchet. I told him that I wish I'd grown up at his house, as he clearly had more than tinker-toys and lincoln logs in the toy box. :-)

Doggone it. I am really bummed out.
