Thats largely because of name recognition. Nobody knows who allen is right now and if you check the uber blogosphere poll that hugh hewitt/patrick ruffini used to run(the one where 10s of thousands of blog readers woudl vote), allen would beat rudy.

Not only did I regularly check Hugh Hewitt's 2008 presidential polls, I used to vote in them myself.
There was not a single one in which Allen even came close to beating Rudy.

The top 2 used to be Condi and Rudy, with Rudy leading when Condi was excluded.

You clearly haven't seen the latest ones. From the beggining it was always rudy in first and allen in second, then as time passed allen eventually overtook rudy. Mind you though it was usually a 3 point spread.

Take this months spread

http://www.patrickruffini.com/july08results.php

Allen is at 33%, rudy at 27.2%

Nice try

Are you a typical Allen supporter ?
Do they always engage in ad hominem attacks whenever someone expresses confidence or support for a candidate other than Allen ?
You called me a " desperate , liberal Rudy pimper " because I believe that Allen does not have the gravitas or seasoning to head the ticket.
You've thrown similar charges at those who say they would support Romney.
You don't explain or defend Allen calmly and maturely - instead you immediately label posters who support other candidates over Allen as pathetic liberals and RINOs .
I can't imagine that this is the type of image Allen wants to convey , but, you know him better than I do.
Because should Allen get the nomination, this desperate, pathetic, liberal, Rudy, RINO pimper intends to give him my full support.

Your right, i should change the way i approach this and i apologize. From here on out i'll change the way i approach it.

If rudy gets the nod, he has my vote. But if mccain gets the nod, he can dream on.

But you are wrong about him lacking gravitas and his ability to head the top of the ticket.

No hard feelings- we're all on the same page.

"If rudy gets the nod, he has my vote. But if mccain gets the nod, he can dream on. " Ditto.

"But you are wrong about him lacking gravitas and his ability to head the top of the ticket." OK. I'm willing to give him a second look.

Haven't had time to run through all the comments here but Rudy is a RINO, he never even suppoted Pataki when he was running against Cuomo.
Can't vote for Rudy even if he is the nominee without knowing a lot more.
The best guy out there may be Gov. Mark Sanford of S. Carolina. He is the one I would vote for hand down.
But the big question is will he consider running?????

Not me! Rudy never met an abortion he didn't like or a gun he did. On social issues, he's as far left as Hillary.

Just wondering: What makes him a more capable leader than, say, Allen, Brownback or Santorum?

I'm with you. Republicans who think they can win without the religious right are deluding themselves. He's no different from Hillary on the issues that are most important to this powerful voting bloc.

"I have come to believe that "conservatives" have a hidden anti-republican agenda."

Not at all, as long as you mean republican governing philosophy and not Republican Country Club. I've seen it time and time again, the fat cats waltz in and put in a corporate Democrat who happens to have fallen onto the Republican bandwagon. Well Homey don't play that game no more, and a lot of people on Free Republic have wised up too. The Party elite, like those Giulani supporters who show up suddenly on Free Republic after we haven't heard squat from them before, need to realize the game is changing.

That is total emotional demagoguery. My Republican grandfather voted for the party that fought for civil rights and personal responsibility and freedom, not a narrow religious agenda.

Arlen Specter has supported Roberts and Alito also...the question for everyone to decide, is who would Rudy appoint, if he had the power

All of these poll numbers will change once Condi Rice throws her hat in the ring.

As much as I wish she would she has said NO numerous times.
