I was gone all day...heard the announcement on the radio. One thing that struck me as they played a cliip of Katie's announcement: she doeos not have the voice or "gravitas" to anchor. None. Regardless of her politics, she sounds like a high school girl. Even if she wears her "serious" glasses and a blalck or navy suit, she just isn't going to be able to sound like an anchor. Period.
um... do I want to know where her right hand and forearm are?
I do not belive that there is viewer demand for a fluffy, perky presnece in Uncle Walter's chair. (The position does not require fairness or objectivity so I do not criticize on that basis.)
Last time I watched "Today", Gumbel was still there, so I'm no Katie fan, but judging her strictly on current ability, she'll be a spectacular failure as a news anchor unless they give her some serious help (way more packages, reporters at the desk intro-ing their own packages, etc).
She doesn't have a great voice, and reading solo for most of 22min is harder than it seems. She's used to light, short intros, no camera changes and having others within arms reach to turn to when a tape or satellite shot goes down.
Even for an experienced solo anchor, tension tightens the vocal chords and affects breathing. In a female anchor, that generally translates to 'shrill'. Should be fun...
