Frankly, I don't understand why the school is defining who can be a family at all for kindergardners.

I was thinking the same thing. They don't see it, ironically, that they are putting a box around 'family' to be sure it's taught the way they want, like it or not, beneficial or not. They're crying foul because things aren't being defined to suit them. They're doing the very thing they claim the 'opposition' is doing.

Have have they run out academics and motor skills to teach?

Not just run out of purely academic things, but floundering with them as well.
