Smoking Ban Meeting Planned For Tuesday

POSTED: 7:04 pm CDT September 19, 2005 UPDATED: 1:35 pm CDT September 20, 2005

MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Common Council is preparing to clear the air on the city's smoking ban Tuesday night.

Many of those who have rallied to repeal the smoking ban are expected to attend Tuesday night's common council meeting.

Three smoking-related things are on the agenda including an outright appeal of the ban, an amendment to allow businesses to apply for a hardship exemption and a proposal for a citywide referendum.

"It doesn't look like there's enough votes to repeal the ban," said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. "And at this point, it doesn't look like there are enough votes for the other options as well. At this point, it looks like the smoking ban will remain in place."

Spokesmen for the group that supports repealing the smoking ban said they have eight of the 11 votes needed for repeal.

Good! The reasons Computer/hardware Engineering jobs have "titles" is to indicate the level of expertise. Not to "stroke the egos". An fyi...a distinguished member of technical(or consulting) Staff usually has a Ph.D or MS (magna-cum-laude) from a reputed school or is a highly decorated achiever in Computer/Electronic/VLSI/hardware engineering areas. besides this they usually have technical patents in either the related or the above mentioned Engineering fields. They write papers, publish their work and the world follows what they have to dictate through their innovations. For example, google for Ward Vercruyse. Thats the kind of people we call Member of tech./consulting Staff. Or Yuri Apanovich or Arun Netravali or myself :) you can find my work at IEEE transactions too :) The last time I "needed" a title was more than 20 years ago.

I gave you the title in one of my earlier posts "Dr.Gabz" with an imaginary Ph.D from University of Nicotinia with a specialization in Nicotinology !!!!

More Smoke to the Smokers!!!!

I like it....I love everything about USA. USA is the beacon of liberty, hope and compassion in this world. Do you think you and i can talk with this kind of freedom in countries like mine or others? No way...

That is why I work 10-21 hours per day of 72 hours straight or over 80 hrs per week to contribute what I contribute with my highly motivated engineering/scientific team.

The most recent contributions I made were in "High speed hardware modeling and implementation of Iris recognition imaging encryption scheme for Biometric digital signatures". A lot of companies use the solutions I along with my esteemed colleagues developed in classified and unclassified applications. Contributions such as mine and other technology geeks are the ones that keep this beautiful country to maintain its strong technological lead.

If you think that I am one of the anti-American kind that you are talking about, you are mistaken!!! Just because I hate public smoking or throwing cigarette butts in public places or while driving cars does not mean that someone should have to classify me as an anti-American !!!

Hey I am not telling you how to run your business. All I am saying like I mentioned earlier is smoking in public places and throwing cigarette butts on the road while driving is an extreme irritant.

I am not saying how to run your store. That is your private life and I have no right to intrude into your private life.

Luckily, I do not have to know about how to run a store or a 7-11 and also it is too much of manual work. I like using brain to make money than making money from manual work!!! have people to do the manual work in my house too !!! The only time I do a nonstop two hour manual work is when I play tennis whenever I can find some time. For the rest of the manual work at home I have servants and at office I have a secretary and an office assistant!!!

I don't use a title at all - it confuses the little people.

I just refer to myself as an "analyst."

Or scientist, if you prefer. I just do my little thing, pay the bills, and try to help out.

Are they legal? Are they well paid? Do you treat them with respect?

I doubt it----you ooze condescension and arrogance. Shame on you !

My bar or restaurant is NOT a public place - why can you not get that through your supposedly intelligent brain?

You have no concept of the fact of private property owners that INVITES the public into their establishments as opposed to public places such as the local court house or city hall.

You are no better than a liberal as long as you refuse to believe in the rights of private property owners when they do not agree with your ideas.

There are lots of nonsmoking establishments I patronize on a regular basis, because I enjoy the atmosphere or the food or whatever - because it was the DECISION of the owner - not by government edict provoked by whiners like you.

As to rude smokers who litter - as I said earlier, you know nothing about me - I have actually pulled off to the side of the road and made a passenger get out of the car and go pick up the butt tossed out the window. I've done it more than once. I do not tolerate littering of any type.

You oppose the right of a private property owner to make decisions about how he or she runs their business and the clientele to whom they wish to cater and that, in my book, makes you not only an anti-smoker, but anti-American, and anti-private enterprise.

I trust that has clarified my position about your anti-American position.

No no you have misunderstood me.

Here are the two examples on what I am saying -

1. If a smokers smoke and throw their cigarette butts in public places, i cannot stand that.

2. If smokers throw their cigarette butt on roads while driving their cars, that is very irritating.

3. If smokers walk into a meeting with their cigarette stench that is not acceptable. Infact, now some tech companies are encouraging smokers not to walk into the buildings with cigarette stench.

Situations such as these above three are irritating and unhelpful.

Places like a house or a restaurant or a private company are not public properties so they must have the FReedom to do their business as they please. I am totally supportive of that.

Only scenarios such as the three above that irritate me.
