Smoking Ban Meeting Planned For Tuesday

POSTED: 7:04 pm CDT September 19, 2005 UPDATED: 1:35 pm CDT September 20, 2005

MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Common Council is preparing to clear the air on the city's smoking ban Tuesday night.

Many of those who have rallied to repeal the smoking ban are expected to attend Tuesday night's common council meeting.

Three smoking-related things are on the agenda including an outright appeal of the ban, an amendment to allow businesses to apply for a hardship exemption and a proposal for a citywide referendum.

"It doesn't look like there's enough votes to repeal the ban," said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. "And at this point, it doesn't look like there are enough votes for the other options as well. At this point, it looks like the smoking ban will remain in place."

Spokesmen for the group that supports repealing the smoking ban said they have eight of the 11 votes needed for repeal.

Please click the source link above and Freep this poll to repeal the Madison, WI destructive, mean-spirited and just plain stupid Smoking Ban. Thanks! (I voted and I don't live there...but the ban is creeping over the hill and will soon hit my town, hurting businesses and my neighbors.) It means nothing, really, but at least smokers and pro-business non-smokers can flood the poll to make their voices heard.

Be on the look-out for the lurking Anti-Smoking Nazis on this thread...they'll be here quick enough. ;)

File a claim for the right to smoke in your own business (property, as in 'the pursuit of happiness.'). The market has the freedom of choice of where it wants to rest and spend its money in our free enterprise system, NOT the gummint.

Deprivation of your rights is not a petty offense.

What smoking did they ban....all smoking or just smoking in certain areas....

I find it interesting how smoking has somehow become a conservative thing......liberals are not just opposed to smoking out of health reasons but for political reasons too. I quit smoking cigars last April and was talking with a liberal friend of mine about it and he said: "dont you feel much better" and I said NO, I loved smoking cigars and life was more fun as a smoker...I quit cuz I didn't want to pay for the habit anymore and did not like the stale smoke stinking up my car and house.

He couldn't believe that I actually preferred the smoking life over non-smoking and did not feel any health benefits to quitting. It almost offended him..

The tavern owners will go out of business. Great for the local economy, huh?

I see a lot of liberals at college who smoke, not sure how they reconcile themselves with the anti-smoking nazis.

The danger of second-hand smoke has been grosly overstated, in order to convince voters to support smoking bans.

Again, it is my firm belief that government should stay out of the private individuals' business. The owner(s) of the bar/restaurant should be able to make their own rules. If they want a smoking area to accomodate smokers, then they should be able to. If they want a totally non-smoking establishment, then, again, that's their rule. But, it's the owners property and let them make the rules and government stay out! Non-smoking Nazis are taking away a legal freedom, not to mention a huge tax contributor.

Thanks a lot for the link. I've lost all my docs and links due to a long series of computer viruses and have to re-build my archives from scratch.

The numbers are not surprising...the antis are "freeping" the poll - they do it all the time. They have invested lots of time and money into these bans and they are going to have no part of letting business owners make their own business decisions.
