The four young Britons who blew themselves up on 7/7, killing 52 of their more normal life-loving neighbors, were not needed as guidance systems for the bombs. There were no hijacked planes to pilot, nor any truck bomb to steer.
Neither were they needed as a disguise for the bombs. The subways are hardly secure areas behind checkpoints. Anyone may enter or leave; and the bombs were in bags, not worn as vests. Had the terrorists left the bombs under the seats and exited, they would have killed just as many unarmed commuters as they did by setting them off in their hands. Madrid proved that.
As best I can tell, there was no tactical necessity for the London bombers to die.
No, the four men that died voluntarily in the blasts did so simply because they aspired to be egg timers. It was, apparently, the only role in the attack that they could imagine for themselves in which they got to die. And a glorious death was the goal around which...

But a dead terrorist can give no names of the cell leaders, or the cleric who was in cooperation with them. A terrorist who gets to walk away might. As much as anything, the death of the "timers" was probably seen as necessary to ensure silence.

It is probably easier to convince young Abdul to take his backpack bomb on a train, leave the bomb and get off the train at 8:05 because it will go off at 8:10. When it actually goes off at 8:00, you have a new non-volunteer martyr for the cause.

Muslim Homicide Bomber = "Dumb Bomb"
If I was a young muslim, I would be leary of the living, breathing, still kicking, plethora of imams and mullahs who seem so gung-ho for muslim youths to blow themselves up. I mean, if the rewards are so great why are they still here and trying so hard to remain so?
1) Shame. Publicize the victims of terror attacks to show their humanity to deter others from becoming suicide bombers
Sorry, the 9/11 films of people jumping to their deaths to avoid burning to death have already been excised from the public memory. The press sure as hell won't show the mangled bodies lying on the ground after the jump.
If the press would go along, this might be effective. Before the past ten years of the Palestinians blowing up pizza parlors in their fight, I was of the mind "just let them have their state and see if they can make a go of it". My heart was hardened to their "plight" after their attacks on innocent people.
2) Momma can be made a martyr too, you know. Go after the families of suicide bombers and make their lives a living hell to make it quite clear to not raise your children to be bombers. Also to make bombers realize that they might be gone, their families will pay.

3) Public Auction: Mosque for sale. If the mosque is used in the commision of a crime, the seize it. Also harrass troublesome mosques and their imans with every bit of regulation you can throw at them.

4) Is that goat hair on your nightstand? Dig through the private lives of bombers and publically humiliate them. Make sure that everyone knows that every embarassing rumor of the bombers' lives will become public.

All of these require the press to play ball. Unfortunately it is quite apparent that most are not on our side in this war.
In general these suggestions focused on making potential suicide bombers and their support system that although the bomber is dead after an attack, he will not be held up for universal admiration. The first will only enflame the non-Muslim poplulation (and it does need to be inflamed). Trying to shame them with the dead bodies of their victims would be like trying to shame the SS with pictures of piles of Jewish bodies at the German death camps. The lower level ones might be horrified. The upper levels and the true believers (those most likely to become bombers) will just get excited about seeing their victims.
Hey, someone's gotta watch the mosque! And those rucksack bombs, they're...uh.....heavy! Yeah, they're so heavy only the young healthy kids can carry them! Yeah, that's it!
I see no reason that RICO Statutes shouldn't, or couldn't, be used to fight terrorism.
I also suspect the bombers were very surprised when they pushed the button and discovered there are no virgins, just lots of flames and pain :)
OBL is the new "old Man of the Mountain", and the bombers are his assasins. Only he likes to kill thousands at a time. And just like the following centuries of leaders that KILLED members of this Cult, we will have to do the same.
I thought so too, but I read an eyewitness report from the second bombing where the bomber was laying on the backpack waiting to die.
Historical perspective is paramount.
We need to step up the hunt & show these duped rascals whose runin' the the schoolyard.
