I forget which talking head last night said Roberts would be in line to succeed Rehnquist as chief justice now, even if Rehnquist retires relatively soon, like within 6 months. That would be an interesting move but I wonder if it wouldn't be a bit of an insult to the more senior Scalia or Thomas.

I would be really surprised if it wasn't Scalia. Thomas would be an excellent choice, but I see Bush going with seniority. I don't see Roberts being in the cards for the chief justice job anytime soon.

Isn't John Roberts from the state of New York originally? Wouldn't it behoove Upchuck and Hillary the Heinous Harridan to vote FOR him? Oh, I forgot -- they don't care where he is from -- it is the seriousness of the charges he is going to face!

Kennedy will come up with that molehill!

I saw Senator Blowhard on the Today Show this morning, trying to "frame the debate," so to speak. He spoke with an urgency, describing how a SC justice's job isn't just interpreting the Constitution, no. The justice's job is (loosely paraphrasing) also to define whether or not he's for the environment, or if he's going to pollute it; whether he's for the working man, or the greedy corporations, blah, blah, blah.

Interestingly, I didn't hear him say anything about "women's privacy and health," which are code words for abortionists' rights.

"Isn't John Roberts from the state of New York originally?"

I think he is. He grew up in Indiana. I wonder if Senator Bayh is on board.

Even Reagan didn't get all his picks right.
