Although most people can recognize the familiar E=mc^2 equation. c is itself the result of the permeability (mu) and permittivity (epsilon) "constants" of free space where c=1/sqrt(mu*epsilon). In other words E=mc^2 is not just the equation of rest mass to energy but the m is the actual mass of a given particle. Since m=mo/sqrt(1-(v^2/c^2)), an equation which relates the relativistic mass of a particle to its rest mass, it follows that E=mc^2=(mo*c^2)/sqrt(1-(v^2/c^2))=mo/(mu*epsilon*sqrt(1-(v^2*mu*epsilon))). c is itself subject to this background, and not a constant in and of itself (as seen in its absence in the latter equation). This gives rise to the question...what are the permittivity and permeability fields all about?

Good article....

If having three families is essential, then it is a clue whose significance is currently not understood.... The standard model and the SSM can accommodate the observed family structure, but they cannot explain it. This is a strong statement. It is not that the SSM has not yet explained the family structure but that it cannot.

Thus the quest goes on.... Wonderful article, Patrick! Thank you so much for posting it.

The mystery to me is where the unit "slug" came from.

All comes from observation. We would not have a clue how reality works if we didn't take a look. Not that we can know the ultimate reality anyway.

You're serious? I thought his post was fair play. And what a flattering picture of Teddy!

Is a Higgs boson a particle or a wave? (Or both?)

Thanks for posting this! (I was working on a post of this SciAm article, but you saved me the trouble!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Thus, about 4 to 5 percent of the entire universe--almost all the familiar matter around us--comes from the energy of motion of quarks and gluons in protons and neutrons."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now, that (if I understand it correctly) is one startling statement! Only 4 - 5 percent?

I've read that some people with autism have a difficult time understanding humor, sarcasm, irony, things of that sort. If your having trouble maybe you could post a pretend "LOL".......like "LOPL."

It's usually thought of as a particle but will display wavelike properties if it's setup in the right situation, just like other particles do.

At this point there isn't a Higgs particle generator to use to set that up.

Since I am really "into" this particular aspect of Physics, I can see your point.

OTOH, since this is a political forum, (where plays on words are a common mode of expression) -- and since I had the distasteful experience of living in Massachussetts -- I see (and appreciate) the value of martin_fierro's comment as well.

Chill out -- you are not the only one here...
