I can see what you mean, but it's not quite the same thing. You don't exactly choose to get lung cancer- you get it, or you don't- smoker or non smoker. I was thinking more along the lines of removal of consequence from a choice (drug use)a person makes in my previous post. But, very true, it doesn't mean that the cure is a bad thing.

I just watched that episode last night (thanks, Tivo!). It was written by Jerry Stahl, who wrote "Permanent Midnight" about his own heroin addiction. In the book, he talks about taking some drug (don't think it was ibogaine) that basically left him without the cravings for heroin. He immediately went back onto the drug. The problem--and he has a character say pretty much the same thing in the episode--is that you have to WANT to get off of drugs, and you have to UNDERSTAND what it is in your own personality that made you an addict in the first place. Without those, any "miracle cure" is pretty much a waste of time.

I always (and still do) chalk it up to one of those x-files conspiracy theories mixed in with healthy doses of urban legend.
Notice the referance to the CIA in the very begining, add in elements of money, multiple people turning it down, legal problems, etc, and now its something people can believe in.

With only a bit of sarcasm, I could say that that's when I started taking the article VERY seriously. People outside penal and courts system are mostly unaware of how big a business it really is!
I had, and have, a number of relatives and friends in the corrections 'industry'. With the draconian drug laws that exist in most states and increasingly harsh penalties for other crimes (e.g., '3 strikes' style laws) the corrections bureaucracy is HUGE! In California the PAC representing prison guards is second in lobbying power only to the state teachers association. And none of them would like to lose their job because drug use (and therefore drug arrests and incarcerations) would plummet.
I respectfully disagree that Californian's prison industry PAC is second to the Teachers Union. They were and are the single largest political donor in California. And Grey Davis was their hand-puppet.
Is that anything like Wellbutrin (Zyban)? I can't recall the actual (or generic) name of it, but I do know that it's a psychosomatic (hope I spelled that right, lol) drug. I tried it during one of my practice quitting sessions, and thought it was absolutely wretched stuff. Insomnia coupled with technicolor dreams when I did manage to squeeze in a couple of hours, and zilcho effect on the cravings. Grrr!
