Israel denies involvement in reported missile strike in Iran
Ha'aretz ^ | 16/02/2005

Iranian state TV reported Thursday afternoon that an unknown aircraft fired a missile in its Bushehr province, where Iran has its nuclear power plant. Israel quickly denied any involvement in the reported strike. Iran has complained in recent weeks that American surveillance aircrafts were penetrating Iranian airspace. Six weeks ago, Iran warned that it would fire on any aircraft that entered its airspace. "A powerful explosion was heard this morning on the outskirts of Dailam in the Bushehr province. Witnesses said that the missile was fired from an unknown plane 20 km from the city," Iran's Arabic language Al-Alam said. According to the reports, the missile targeted an area south of the city of Dailam. Earlier Wednesday, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said during a visit to London, that Iran was six months away from having the knowledge to build a nuclear bomb. Iran's Russian-built 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactor is due to start operating in Bushehr province in late 2005. Tehran insists, however, that the facility is to produce atomic energy and not for a weapons program. Iran, Syria to form common front Earlier Wednesday, Iran and Syria, both locked in rows with the United States, said they will form a common front to face challenges and threats. "We are ready to help Syria on all grounds to confront threats," Iranian Vice-President Mohammad Reza Aref said in Tehran after meeting Syrian Prime Minister Naji al-Otari. Otari told reporters: "This meeting, which takes place at this sensitive time, is important, especially because Syria and Iran face several challenges and it is necessary to build a common front".

One thing that seems to be common about the mutual enemies of Israel and the USA - they will do anything and say anything to put the blame on Israel and the USA for everything that has gone wrong since Adam and Eve. And blowing something up and saying the US and/or Israel did it to try and start trouble is an action I wouldn't put past any of them to do to us.

Other than the fuel tank theory being stated here, any of these scenarios are also likely, unless the Iranians staged it-

1.A token American or Israeli strike-highly unlikely or worthless in the longterm.

2.The Iranians shooting down a UAV-likely,but they have yet to show any proof of it.

3.One of Iran's aging anti-aircraft missiles like the Hawk or more recent Russian/Chinese purchases malfunctioning & crashing while trying to engage a contact-now that's highly likely, but very embarassing to accept!!!

My only regret is that the U.S. or Israel did not take out Iran's nuclear program. It needs to be done and done soon.

From what I've seen on the Global Security site, that would be a daunting task. It's pretty hard to get at underground facilities without some sort of bunker-busting nuke.

To brighten our day, Iran and Syria have just signed some sort of formal mutual defense agreement.

"A powerful explosion was heard this morning on the outskirts of Dailam in the Bushehr province. Witnesses said that the missile was fired from an unknown plane 20 km from the city,"

sounds like the Iranians had a little accident, and cooked up the airplane story.

And how does a fuel tank fall from an airplane??? That's as crazy as saying that Flight 800 climbed after the nose of the plane fell off. I know what you mean about the FLT 800 part, that was just insane.

However, IF it was a fuel tank that fell, it was from an Iranian Air Farce plane. Those can be and generally are equiped with "drop tanks" to extend the range of an aircraft. Most of ours can carry 3- 1 under each wing and 1 slung centerline.

Besides extending the range, the drop tanks have another advantage. When the aircraft takes off, they are burning fuel from the drop tanks. Then, if they get into a fight, they drop the tanks & start fighting with a "full load" of fuel.
