Thailand's royal family also were among the grieving. The Thai-American grandson of King Bhumipol Adulyadej, Poom Jensen, 21, was reportedly jet skiing when the tidal wave struck Phuket.

Okay, not to make light of this horrible event (reading what happened to these people is heartbreaking), but I'll bite on this - how do you pronounce "Phuket"?

For me it helps to put more of a face on the tragedy to hear about how it affected people about whom I know a little. I can't fathom tens of thousands of dead strangers and all the suffering they went through, and their survivors are now experiencing. But it helps me to relate a little bit when it involves some whose names I've heard or whose work has had an impact on my life.

When I heard it pronounced several different ways on TV
(EXCEPT for the way that they don't even DARE to pronounce it)
I began to suspect that they're desperately mispronouncing it on purpose and hoping that nobody notices.
