I'm sensitive enough not to allow a bunch of obnoxious elitists relegate our culture to the rubbish bin. How about you?

My professors use "B.P.", meaning "before present".

I first encountered this phenomenon in college, and I eventually took a seminar called "Acts and the Early Church" where this phraseology was used incessantly.
On several occasions I was "corrected" - "you mean CE."
So I started saying things like: "When the Temple was destroyed by the Romans in the year of our Lord 70" etc.
People were absolutely fuming.

Did you use AD and BC in graded work to incite an issue with the school?
You could have had more fun with that one...

Uh, no...that's BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy).
Besides, isn't the current best guess that Christ was born in 4 BCE, so that to use BC in that context would be self-contradictory?

CE has been in use for at least 100 years.

Of course, the question that most begs to be asked here is, what event are we dating the Common Era from? Answer: the approximate birth date of Jesus of Nazareth!
Don't accept the common era BS. It's AD and BC just like it always was.

So have most of the profanities you'll find in the English language. The fact that this has been in use is no argument that it is worthwhile or particularly intelligent.

The graded work was to produce one research monograph (most were about 60 pages) and to present it.
The professor wasn't particularly PC, it was my fellow students who gave me the hard time.

Sorry!! Too Bad !-- About your other point: a pope in the 900 adjusted the calendar and changed the years. Are you advocating we should change the current date to 2008 .Is that your main concern, that we correctly reflect the date of the birth of Christ.
To: wideawake
Thats funny! thats how to fight this..just keep saying Ad and BC, and keep refering to history in the light of Jesus and Jeudeo/Christian focus. state the fact that BC, became AD when Jesus was born. That we are counting the days since jesus was born...etc.
never give them what they want.
