ANOTHER UPDATE: You can see a more complete statement on CNN's homepage -- click the "Netscape responsible for Bush photo insult" link at the top right. But since that's a java box and can't be directly linked, and probably won't be archived anywhere, I'm going to reproduce the full thing in the "extended entry" area below. Hit "read more" to read it. Read More »
Text follows:
Netscape responsible for Bush photo insult
Disparaging image tags used to identify photos of President and Mrs. Bush currently circulating on the Internet were not created, disseminated or posted by CNN at any time, as is alleged. They were done by a junior-level employee of Netscape and posted on Netscape.com. CNN had no knowledge of this until it surfaced on other Web sites.
Netscape, which corrected the situation when it was discovered, has released a statement apologizing for the "inappropriate and disparaging terms" that were used in the image tags -- and saying that the company has terminated the employee.
So there you are.

Someone at CNN had to see that filename when the image was grabbed even if it resides on Netscape's servers.

OK computer geeks...I'm confused!
CNN says that it wasn't their fault, just some guy at Netscape messing around and he got fired.
Here's the question: the URL of the link is: cnn.netscape.cnn.com. That means that the "domain" that the image was served on was "cnn.com". The first part of the URL is "cnn.netscape", which would just be a "host name" attached to the domain through the DNS server.
The ONLY way that CNN wouldn't "know" about it is if the "cnn.netscape" host name pointed to a different server that was completely controlled by Netscape. Would CNN allow their domain to be controlled in such a way?
Thoughts???

Oops...Never Mind...
The page the image was USED on belongs to cnn.com, but the image itself was PULLED from a netscape.com server.
It still seems to me that a web copy editor would have to choose that image from the netscape.com server since netscape.com only provides the image and not the story.

Any chance of publicizing this employee's name and address? A healthy dose of public exposure and shame for the little jerk might do it some good.

News anchor was saying, "Police are looking for two bank robbers who blahblahblah..." As she was saying that, along with a live shot of one of the banks, two pictures of Bush were flashed on the screen. I assume it was some newsroom hack's attempt at a joke.

I hope all of these sad haters of America and GW go to Canada. I sent this link to a few young conservative relatives who hire and fire people. They now know who not to use while looking for people.
Yesterday at our local supermarket, there were a lot of sad faces through out the store. The two clerks who checked me out were very pro Bush, and one with a big grin asked very loud what I thought about the election.
I said that it was one of my best days in my life and a great early birthday present. The second clerk said that I sounded like his dad and family.
A couple of sad sacks behind were about to say something. Then I said the haters of GW had best move to Canada, because he is here for 4 more years. They looked even sadder.

Here is a page out of their playbook:

Original message
All right, DUers, time to get the Bibles out and start studying
I am dead serious about this. I am anything but a "Bible-based Christian", but at least I've read the dang thing cover-to-cover. I know a few key quotes chapter and verse, and I win every--and I mean EVERY--throwdown I get into with a born-again nutcase.
If you have no Bible, or if you have one that's old, moldy, and full of dried flower pressings, I would highly recommend the New Living Translation, AKA "The BOOK" or "The Living Bible". It's written in somewhat contemporary language and will at least give you a good idea of the specifics.
I know some of you are Muslim, Buddhist, Taoist, Atheist, Scientologist, Breatharian, Wiccan, or Oprahn (I made that one up), but it matters not a whit. Some of you may just have serious, almost genetic problems with Judao-Christianism. Maybe your terrible parents made you go to a horrible church. Maybe you were abused by your priest. Maybe you absolutely find the whole notion of religion absurd. I sincerely appreciate these issues. I've been there. But at the same time I have to implore you to deal with whatever baggage you have and tough it out. Read the Bible critically if you have to; that's all I'm asking you to do. But read it. And come to know it, in detail.
The Bible is what the opposition bases their whole bizarre religiosocioeconomic worldview on. It is their playbook. Their serious flaw, however, and their glaring mortal weakness, is that they only play the game with each other. They have not one clue about what their own playbook really says, as they have injected centuries of their own prejudices and selfish motivations into it. They have no idea how to effectively fight with their Bible when faced with a real challenger who knows more about the book than they do and CAN PROVE IT. This kind of confrontation is a stinging affirmation that they are not as holy or pious as they think they are, and that, for them, is the worst thing imaginable. It destroys them. I've seen it happen over and over again.
At the risk of drawing the sports analogy out to a tiresome extent, coaches of all sports know that if they want to shut down a formidable opponent in the face of apparently insurmountable odds, they need to discover and analyze their opponents' game plan in detail. This is an arduous, excruciating process. It involves hours and hours of research. But it works. There are ALWAYS weaknesses that can be exploited. NO opponent is perfect.
I know there was an enormous amount of cheating in this election. I know the results are fraudulent. But it cannot be denied that there is a huge "morality" movement that is attributed to this book and is, quite frankly, WRONG. The media won't talk about it. Our candidates won't talk about it. We need to get in the faces of these people on the ground and set them straight. It's a culture war, my friends. Let's use their own weapons, which work so well for them, against them.
And who knows, you might just...maybe...learn something useful in the process.
