Netscape responsible for Bush photo insult [image filename a**hole.jpg, employee fired]
CNN via Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit ^ | 11/04/04 | unknown

Posted on 11/04/2004 5:27:00 PM PST by conelrad

ANOTHER UPDATE: You can see a more complete statement on CNN's homepage -- click the "Netscape responsible for Bush photo insult" link at the top right. But since that's a java box and can't be directly linked, and probably won't be archived anywhere, I'm going to reproduce the full thing in the "extended entry" area below. Hit "read more" to read it.

Text follows:

Netscape responsible for Bush photo insult

Disparaging image tags used to identify photos of President and Mrs. Bush currently circulating on the Internet were not created, disseminated or posted by CNN at any time, as is alleged. They were done by a junior-level employee of Netscape and posted on Netscape.com. CNN had no knowledge of this until it surfaced on other Web sites.

Netscape, which corrected the situation when it was discovered, has released a statement apologizing for the "inappropriate and disparaging terms" that were used in the image tags -- and saying that the company has terminated the employee.

So there you are.

The link Glenn Reynolds refers to isn't at the cnn.com homepage right now.

It looks as if Wizbangblog released this story into the blogosphere.

I tried googling for the Netscape story, but didn't get anything returned, so I don't know how Netscape released its statement.

FR caught the Houston Chronicle pulling a similar stunt about a month ago. It was that pic of the little girl with the pigtails put up in a "W" shape. The link to it was something like \\image\brainwashedgirl. After a few pajamagrams in the Chronicle's email box, they changed it.

While I take their word that CNN itself had nothing to do with this (it would be moronic for them to do that), it's disengenuous for them to totally disassociate themselves with Netscape. They are sister companies. AOL bought Netscape before AOL and Time Warner (CNN's parent) merged.

If the work was done at any of the WarshDC Metropolitan Area NETSCAPE or AOL facilities (there are many), it's surprising her body didn't just show up at Fort Marcy Park.

I suspect Dan Rather is pi$$ed he didn't think of it first. But, then again, he's too busy saying Iowa and New Mexico are too close to call, and provisional ballots in Ohio should be counted. (ignoring the fact there were provisional ballots in MI and WI).

Exactly. I received a reply to my e-mail from the AOL/TW investor relations folks earlier today which disavowed Netscape's shenanigans as though it were some non-related company they weren't responsible for - it's in the AOL/Time Warner/CNN corporate group, for heaven's sake, but they're acting like they never heard of 'em before, LOL!

I love it when the liberal media is exposed for being the hateful partisans that they are.

Someday, the liberal businessmen that run them will wonder how they can improve profits and market share. Someday, their stockholders will demand it.
