The U.S. Cavalry
The Wall Street Journal ^ | July 4, 2004 | Masthead Editorial

The alternative to U.S. "unilateralism" and "hegemony" is catastrophe.

Colin Powell has just made a high-profile trip to Sudan to examine at first hand the abominations in Darfur, the western province that is the world's latest killing field.

The Secretary of State's visit also throws a spotlight on another unfortunate global reality. Once again the world is calling on the U.S. to stop a horror that the United Nations and everybody else have failed to act against. The killing of black Muslim tribesmen by government-backed Arab militias has been going on since February of last year. But while the world's moralists are in full cry about the threat of "another Rwanda," no one sees fit to actually do something. No one, that is, except the U.S.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has been raising the alarm about Darfur--and he also visited there this week--but not until two weeks ago did the Security Council call for an immediate halt to the fighting. This being the U.N., the resolution was toothless. Permanent members China and France are worried about jeopardizing their business interests in Sudan. Pakistan and Algeria, which hold temporary seats, refuse to impose sanctions on a fellow Muslim nation even as it is engaged in the mass killing of Muslims.

Rather, the event that finally caught the attention of the government in Khartoum was the Bush Administration's threat last month to impose serious sanctions on Sudan and refuse visas to Sudanese officials. The next day Sudan's president went on state radio to say he had ordered a "complete mobilization" to disarm the warring parties in Darfur. We'll see. This regime is not known for keeping its promises.

Worse yet, we are about the only ones willing to do anything. As was the case in the Philipines, Liberia, Haiti and Republic of Georgia in 2003. The rst of the arm chair expetrs sit back and put criticise. As the French talk of US "Interests" and the Germans about "Oil", the french rub their hands watching as people get slaughtered and insure not to disturb their intersts and the Germans buy their oil from the middle east.

The Europeans are a bunch of bafoons. Hypocrites with a fake sense of security created from living under the security umbrella of the US.

At least this article kind of shows the fake French morality. Yep, we still haven't forgotten the pictures of French sold ROLAND air defense missles to Iraq. These missl;es were built after 1991, but wasn't it the politicians of France telling us that the embargo and sanctions are working?

Over 6 million tribal peoples were slaughtered in Africa in the 1990's, by Islamic militia mostly.
Way more than AIDS ever killed.....
Most of them Christians.

Why all of a sudden the big concern now ?

I wasn't attacking him. I was expounding on the idea that we do something while others complain and snivel while staying in the background doing little or nothing. I agree with you and with what "neverdem" probably believes.

I'm getting sick an tired of our own media acting as an unpaid unofficial press agent of Islamist radicals, freaks and wierdos or forign interests (Like we are supposed to care what the French think about the war in Iraq?). Our politicians who are willing to sell out their own military as Kerry would and subtely is during his election bid. An American public that acts like sheep, where the public opinion is monitored by the minute and having a good "appearance" and "voice" mean more than substance (Any Clinton speech).

"Way more than AIDS ever killed..... "

They are killing each other WITH AIDS! Rape and fully understanding what AIDS is, the warlords use it as a weapon for genocide.

Great point! I wonder how many of the rapists have come down with HIV as a result of their activities...one can only hope!

Sadly in Africa it's a common belief that if you have sex with a virgin, it will cure you of AIDS. A lot of young kids have been raped because they're more likely to be virgins. There was one instance where a 2 year old girl was raped. There are much more instances of AIDS being spread by rape.

One can quibble about numbers.

If you put your cursor over the words "A CONTINENT IN PERIL", it will state that over "17 million Africans have died" since the start of the epidemic.

Over 6 million tribal peoples were slaughtered in Africa in the 1990's, by Islamic militia mostly. Way more than AIDS ever killed..... Most of them Christians.

Why all of a sudden the big concern now ?

It's not so politically incorrect to discuss Arabic and Muslim hypocrisy after September 11, 2001.

Happy Fourth of July!!!!

RATS would like to tie a genocide millstone around Bush's neck. Sudan happened on his watch, etc.. This would cancel out Clinton's specious remarks to Rwanda as Air Force One sat on the tarmac, engines running, "They didn't tell me what was going on. I had no idea it was genocide." I'm sure he felt their pain. RATS would love to see American forces sent here, there, and everywhere so they could criticize endlessly. They won't be happy until Kerry and the UN have control over this country. Worldwide socialism with the US footing the bill.

I understand the situation of Africans raping very young girls in the belief that they will cure AIDS. But what I was referring to is the muslim practice of raping women to procreate "light-skinned children." We all know that unprotected sex will result in AIDS, especially in Africa which seems to be unable to stop the heterosexual spread of that blight.
